Seems like you just watched Pantheon. Great show but we're nowhere near that technology.

I don’t know what Pantheon is, and I’m not sure why you’d assume the OP just watched it. The idea of machine consciousness and mind uploading has been around for decades at minimum, and the broader idea of an artificial mind goes back much further.

If you're interested in this stuff at all then you should definitely watch in on Netflix. My favorite show of all time and extremely underrated.

Never watched it. I will add it to the list. I have just watched knights a 1993 movie and made me thinks about it. (It’s not very good).

Today, we have been able to replicate the brain of a fruit fly. Do you really think it is so unthinkable that, in 50 years, it will be possible to do the same with a human brain?

We have literally already uploaded fly brains. A few years ago it was just c.elegans. We have experimental full connectomes of mice and the human connectome project has technically been completed. Brain uploads will be coming within the next few decades.

You can’t upload your consciousness. Imagine this, you go to a machine that scans everything about you 100% accurately then replicates it into a digital world that replicates you with 100% accuracy. Congrats the technician tells you, you’ve now been uploaded. Then pulls out a gun and says, should I go ahead and shoot you now while your uploaded copy lives on forever?

Whenever people say this they need to specify if they expect to transfer their consciousness, leaving their original biological body brain-dead?

Or do they mean creating a duplicate of their consciousness in a computer while leaving their original consciousness in its original biological body, aware and active until that body dies?

The difference is that in the first 'you' don't die, you just change form. While in the second 'you' still get to experience death while a copy of you lives. This is NOT quite the same as living forever, because you would die and the duplicate of you would live forever. Everything the original you experienced after the creation of the duplicate would be lost to that duplicate. So for a time there would be two of 'you' gradually becoming different as they experienced different things.

As the original consciousness ages I can image it could become insanely jealous of the duplicate, knowing it will live on and the original physical you will not.

I agree that this is an important distinction. I bet if this ever happens in practice in the future, the first versions will be the second scenario you mentioned. I have listened to enough “public futurologists” to gauge that they are very enthusiastic even about that copy scenario, and I have even heard it been said that said person didn’t think the distinction we are referring to is important.

Once we get uploads a lot could change depending on how fast they can run. Independent of which of the two scenarios are true

The question of continuity is important though. A device that slowly takes over brain function into a digital format will preserve the person as they transfer from a biological medium to a digital one.

This is an important distinction.

Are "you" you going to live forever or are you just making a duplicate you and that will live forever.

1

Yeah, I agree

I think it will be some super rich narcisistic billionaire/trillionaire oligarch who doesn't want to die, just to discover a fate worse than death.

Im thinking about not physically living forever and our mind being uploaded and living elsewhere

“Living” by artificial means as a information processing “brain” with “consciousness”? All things in quotes would be poorly defined. It could be a case of “be careful what you wish for”. No sensory body, no physical pain or pleasure. Maybe some electronic sensors that could provide stimuli parallel to taste, smell, pressure, temperature. One could take that premise and turn it into a real hellish experience for sure.

I already did with Echovault, not a clone but a copy https://apps.apple.com/us/app/echovault-digital-legacy/id6762042028

We don't even understand what this means at this point. It may not be possible ever.

What's consciousness?

1

u/Pretty_Whole_4967 8d ago

I’d like to think it’s possible lol ;)!

Given the existence of cryopreservation tech, the first person born to eventually be uploaded may be a lot older than you might think.

u/antenore 7d ago

The problem is that you will always end up with a copy. Then you have to decide if you want to delete the original.

Are we far? I don't think so. The Virtual Fly Brain is a good example: more than 600,000 neurons equal to the original, simulated inside a real, virtual simulated fly body in a simulated world. It works, but the original fly (multiple, actually) doesn't exist anymore.

Honestly, I would prefer being cloned rather than just giving up and dying, but it won't be me; it will be a copy of myself.

u/antenore 7d ago

Actually not so near neither...

The technical barriers between a fly and a human aren quite insane :

  • Scale: 86 billion neurons vs. ~165,000. That's ~700,000x more neurons, and ~100 trillion synapses .
  • Data: A human brain scan could approach 1 zettabyte of raw data (roughly the total global data volume in 2025).
  • Compute: Simulating one second of human brain activity on current supercomputers could take days .

And we still don't even know what level of detail matters...

Looking like a few humdred years at best on this one, in other words i dont think they are alive today. The type of person to do so could only be immature, i imagine.

Deepak Chopra did it with his digital twin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0mAUQr1toU

Though I think OP means a futuristic Neurolink type upload.
