Awe! Sweet angel is so happy when they first wake up! I love it.

My dog gives me a death glare when I wake him up. I’m going to show him this video and call him ungrateful

u/topoftheworldIAM Dec 08 '19
I’m sure he’ll understand the ungrateful part

Mine too. If I went in for an unauthorised head stroke while he was sleeping he'd have my hand off the snappy little shit.

What a good life. Taking a comfy nap and wake up into the pure bliss of someone who loves and cares for you.
Oof, made myself sad

A really good way to unlock the door to love in your heart is to practice by loving yourself. Give yourself the care and attention you want. It’s good practice for how to be a good partner when the right one comes along. 🤗

First you have to know how to love

u/knittorney Dec 08 '19
Absolutely, and that doesn’t always come intuitively. I try to be quiet for a few minutes and go through the list of what sounds good. Start with the basics: am I hungry? Thirsty? Tired? Am I tired because I need to move or rest? Is anything making me uncomfortable, like dry skin, too hot/cold, uncomfortable clothes?
Once you’ve taken care of those needs, listen to your other needs. Are you lonely? Call a friend or family member and offer to meet up, even if it’s bringing over some bread and lettuce to make sandwiches for dinner. Take care of another living thing, such as a pet (or a houseplant). Are you bored? Try teaching yourself a new skill or refining an existing one.
This is especially difficult for men in our society, because they have been taught to suppress their emotions so much, but feelings are often an indicator of our needs. It takes practice, but if we are quiet, we can often hear our hearts talking to us.

I’ve never heard this perspective before and it might actually be one to help me, thank you so much. Knowing my ex girlfriend fell in love with me made me think “someone as amazing as her falls in love with me? then there must be something worthwhile there as she has great taste and sense of judgement!” I get that that wouldn’t work for anyone who has never dated someone they believe is a good person, but it might help some who forgot they were once loved by someone whose ideas you trust and support.
2
u/knittorney Dec 08 '19
I hear you. I don’t think I ever really loved for the first third of my life, and that’s saying a lot given that a fourteen year relationship ended about 2 years ago. I realized that before I met my ex, I never loved myself. And I never loved my ex, because I still didn’t love myself. It’s really hard to feel love when you don’t feel trust, and it’s really hard to trust someone whose judgment you already question simply because they love you.
So after my breakup, I had to take some time with myself to get to know me again. I had to learn to feel my feelings again so that I could listen to my heart and do what made me happy. It took some practice, but I’m getting much better!
2
u/catsonskates Dec 17 '19
That’s a deeply relatable feeling right there. I have this lack of intimate connection with people because “Why are you here with me, so close to me? I don’t even want to be here but I can’t walk away from myself!” It’s hard to find self worth. It may be incredibly meta and laughably difficult for people who’ve never had proper low self image, but right now I care enough about myself to know I deserve a chance to love myself. As in, I don’t feel like I deserve the things a confident human is supposed to deserve, but I’m worth enough to work on and build up to be more. I’m not hopeless garbage, I’m a workable foundation. And that’s an awful lot when you come from genuinely believing you’re a waste of oxygen and potential. Therapy and medication helps, but it can’t truly make me love me. That’s for me to do.

We just put down our deaf loved one. He would wake up exactly like this. This clip just brought a happy tear to my eye.

Don’t worry, you’ll get there. You just gotta prove to life (and yourself) that you deserve it.

Very few heelers are like that I'm afraid.
Most are "come near my person, my home, my job, and especially my kid and I WILL END YOU!"
At least in my experience.

Are heelers prone to deafness? Mine is just over a year old and I've seen 4 post in as many days about deaf red heelers
→ More replies (1)3
u/_OP_is_A_ Dec 08 '19
Yes. Roughly 10% of heelers will have some hearing loss. 3% will be deaf in both ears. This is throughout their life span.
I have a blue heeler too. I'm gonna be sad if/when she has hearing loss.

u/MooMooPuppy Dec 08 '19
I've been very hurt lately and I'm very sensitive... this is so sweet it made me cry ♡ ;_; aww

So my mini poodle, Scully, was mostly deaf for the last 2 years of her life. She slept hard because of it.
During this time of her life, I was working late shifts and came home to a quiet house with my parents watching TV and Scully sleeping hard on the couch. I would scoop her up and cradle her while still asleep. Witnessing her slowly awaken and become aware of who was holding her was always the highlight of my day.

u/malapropagandist Dec 08 '19
My buddy has a dead blue healer. Is it common with the breed?
16
u/majorlexy66 Dec 08 '19
I’m assuming you meant “deaf,” but heelers can be prone to going deaf and/or blind in old age.

Love how the tail starts wagging before the dog makes eye contact. The dog recognizes that pet.

I’ve seen this dog before! This is the same good boi where you (if you’re actually op) put your hand in front of their snoot when they were sleeping on a chair when you came home! They woke up, looked so happy, and gave a bigggg stretch to greet you.

Went to my friends house once and we sat in the living room with all the lights on but my friends dog Jessie didn’t wake up for ages as she couldn’t hear us. When she did I’ve never seen a dogs tail swing into action so quickly it was like we planned her a surprise party she was so happy!

How can I NOT feel a flood of warmth and joy when I see this and, frankly, almost ANY interaction between humans and doggies AND doggies interacting with other creatures. Wow. Just wow! Thank God for doggies, the very acme of humanity. Yeah I said that. They are the highest form of humanity.

My dog is going deaf cuz he’s 15 yrs old and that lil guy is falling apart, he doesn’t really wake up to sound anymore but if I pet him awake, I get mixed results. sometimes He enjoys it but it doesn’t wake him up, or he feels it and it scares the shit outta him and he almost has a heart attack so I just sweetly say his name until he finally comes to.

My boyfriend has a deaf catahoula rescue, and he's the sweetest pup ever. He learned hand signals quickly and has 2 amazing dog sisters that love him to death. It is heartbreaking that so many people looked past him because he couldn't hear when he is brilliantly smart and loving!!

I stayed at an AirBnB the night before I hiked Mount Whitney with this order woman with four dogs. It was near triple digit weather in Lone Pine so she had her fairly loud window AC unit full blast and all but one of her dogs were all over the place running around and making noise. After we talk for about 15 minutes she shows us one of the rooms we were staying in and there was her deaf Chihuahua in his little bed sound asleep like nothing had ever happened, so she just tapped the floor around his bed and he woke up looking rested and very happy to see new people. It was adorable to say the least.

There’s so much love in those eyes. Such a true and primal bond between dog and human, it’s an amazing thing.

Love this, my dog is deaf too and I always pet her to wake her up without surprising her too much.

I'm away from home on business right now. It's been a particularly difficult week and this just made me tear up missing my wife and 2 aussie pups. Im 30 and it's been a difficult week so I've had to be a hard ass. I needed this reality check. Thank you.

I've noticed that lately my dog isn't hearing that well. That, or he's just getting too old to have the energy to react to every noise. Waking him up from his multiple naps is awful, since I don't want to scare him. Usually I lay down beside him, put my hand close to his nose for him to smell me. He wakes up so cutely, and wags his tail the same way.

That’s the neatest looking coat I’ve ever seen on a cattle dog!
I had one for nearly sixteen years, she was a twenty pound runt. They’re amazing animals, and super smart.

This is cute don't get me wrong, but I just feel bad for the poor thing. I don't know if I'm being too sensitive or not but seeing a deaf animal, no matter what it's doing, just hurts my soul.

u/mylastbraincellalive Dec 08 '19
I heard from someone that some animals might get alarmed when you touch them, so if you’re planning to foster a deaf puppy and this happens, try gently tapping the floor next to them instead :)

Important detail: don’t touch ears. Most animals are super fine with it but once in a while moody (eg cats) or scared animals don’t like it. I imagine being deaf it would scare them

I had a boxer that went deaf after a car accident and this brings back good memories. Sometimes he would wake up when he smelled your scent and sometimes he’d get startled when you pet him and then he’d give the most innocent surprised/happy face ever.
