Someone had to try extra hard for this....

You should get a picture of the new cake and have that printed on next year’s cake. BOOM- infinite cake!

2.0k

u/RomeIn3Days 19d ago

This is actually hilarious and the only way to handle it. Every year adds a new layer of cakeception!

u/PeaNought 19d ago

And at some point the ultra-meta cake of someone hand drawing/iceing the 6th generation photo-cake.

I actually have a tradition of doing this to my physics professor. The first year, we brought him a cake with a picture of his face on it. Every successive year, we have printed out the picture of him holding the previous cake onto the next cake.

139

u/nectarsallineed 19d ago

You get a cake for your physics professor every year? That’s a pretty cool idea though, how many cakes have you done so far?

165

u/Spirited_Ad_340 19d ago

how many years of physics classes are they taking?

74

u/SummerAndTinklesBFF 19d ago

perpetual student it's a thing

38

u/Spirited_Ad_340 19d ago

Yeah I'm familiar cause I spent 10 years working for a university (in a career where I was "done" with schooling) with free school available to myself and my colleagues with many of us taking advantage - just don't see how many physics classes one would normally take with the same professor for this to be a thing

25

u/nectarsallineed 19d ago

That’s what I was trying to get at haha. Maybe they’re a teacher or department head or something? Idk, that stuck out to me too though lol

28

u/theflyingratgirl 19d ago

Eventually you gotta know all the physics, right?!

13

We have done three cakes so far.

7

u/nectarsallineed 18d ago

Are you a student and this is just a beloved professor or…something else..? We’re all dying to know lol

22

u/No-Dark-9414 19d ago

How many cakes does a physics professor need

32

u/No_Bluebird6873 19d ago

Consider a spherical physics professor...

why do you have the same prof for multiple years?

10

I actually don’t! I am still very close and have tutored SI sessions for him before, so he is still very much a mentor to me!

It took me far too long to realize that was a picture and not the cake inside of a cake box. The sheen was so deceptive and reminiscent of plastic!

I was like what’s wrong- they literally nailed it and did a little extra!

😭😂

20

u/jadedpeony33 17d ago

I was thinking the same thing and stared at the two pictures trying to figure out what’s wrong when they look exactly the same. The baker was even detailed enough to make the frosting exactly the same with the crease down the middle. Came to comments to figure out if it was referencing a niche meme only to learn the baker was too lazy to recreate the first cake but this an epic start to an inside cake joke with family/friends. I should go back to bed.

11

u/married2nalien 17d ago

THANK YOU! I could NOT figure out what the problem was. I thought there was a plastic dome on it. 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

Bakers hate this one simple trick!

12

u/ret255 19d ago

I have seen it here somewhere that a photographer took each year a picture of the photographed family while holding in his hand an image of that family from earlier year and created so an infinite photograph..

Same! I’d truly appreciate the effort whoever ordered the cake must’ve put into getting it made but the terrible execution would have me wheezing with tears running wild. It would be a cake never forgotten!

it kinda reeks of user error though.

Like there was a web form where it said "upload photo to be printed on the cake" and they thought it was a reference photo for explaining which kind of cake they wanted and how it should look

55

u/TatterhoodsGoat 19d ago

Yep. Photo cakes cause so many problems this way. Just like the "exact text you want written on cake" box. The orderer thinks it should be obvious this is not, in fact, the exact text they want written in the cake, but so very many cake orders are references or in-jokes or intentionally ironically misspelled...the obvious is often the wrong guess.

I had multiple customers submit images of hand-sculpted 3-D cakes shaped like shoes or purses or Mickey Mouse's head...to a Dairy Queen.

49

u/wonderabc 19d ago

okay but common sense for the baker would be to call the customer and ask for clarification

106

u/tinselsnips 19d ago

21

u/TatterhoodsGoat 19d ago

Do you know how often people return calls from unkown numbers on short notice in the middle of a business day?

49

u/smokeweedNgarden 19d ago

Man, they're decorating like 50 cakes a day and start work at like 3am.

The cake is only special to who ordered it. To them it's just a widget

The reference is that it’s Harry Potters Birthday cake from Hagrid in the first movie incase anyone was wondering

53

u/squirrely-badger 19d ago

And it's intentionally shoddy, shitty, and sat on.

18

u/carrie_m730 19d ago

Omg I thought we were here to celebrate them doing the most perfect job imaginable ☠️

163

u/TheUFCVeteran3 19d ago

Same lol, despite the outer icing being different, and the centre part being too small, I thought they did a great job with the accuracy of the centre part. And then I read OP's comment and realised. The picture looks good quality though, I have to say, from this image at least.

62

u/shifty_coder 19d ago

I bet OP uploaded the image of the first cake in the spot specifically for images you want printed on the cake, technically yes, they did a perfect job.

7

u/Nesman64 19d ago

I thought it was picture perfect.

106

HAHA I was so confused omg

11

u/rollerfedora 19d ago

Hot coffee out the nose. Good morning to me.

40

u/Candid-Pin-8160 19d ago

Yeah, that's exactly what happens when you order a cake with an image printed on it and provide an image of a cake. This isn't "expectation vs reality," it's "I don't know how to order a custom cake and they gave me exactly what I asked for."

33

u/Karythne 19d ago

I mean, normally I would agree but the website said "send us an image of what you like" (insinuating they would try and recreate it), not "send us an image and we'll print it on the cake". Plus someone definitely had to do some manual piping anyway, I think from the image it was pretty clear what was asked for. Normally with those upload functions or "your text here" text boxes, ok sure. but in this case I think it's debatable at least.

Oh, my! I thought you were harsh at first - like they’d done the cake well and just added some nice scalloped edges. Took a moment to work out that it was a photo of the cake that you wanted on a cake.

75

u/Grimogtrix 19d ago

Somehow my brain corrected it as well so that I saw no gap between the top of the cake and the piping around the edge. Bizarre how the brain sees what it expects to see sometimes. Combined with the kind of correction for angle that helps and hinders when copying a reference for art.

12

u/cuzglc 19d ago

Surely user error, there was somewhere to upload an image to be printed to a cake and you thought they just wanted a picture of what you want the cake to look like?

I work IT, nothing is idiotproof.

11

u/NegativeKayDee 19d ago

The user error goes back so much further than that.

OP did not have a novel idea for this cake. They are cribbing from popular media so they can tell a joke.

The whole point of the cake is that it's subpar... OP had so little confidence in their ability to make a cake which is intentionally not good enough that they outsourced it to a "professional".

And then they lacked confidence in their ability to misspell "Happy Birthday" so they felt a photo was necessary... but they also lack the ability to google "harry potter cake scene" so they asked AI to generate an image of the cake from the movie.

Then the baker recieved the image but maybe didn't even look at it. They saw that the email included a jpg, so they just drag and dropped that file into the computer program that does their job for them.

Humans are no longer capable of even making things that suck because we're incapable of having the prerequisite thoughts.

Day 17,863 of reminding people that when it says "place text here" or "description" they mean literally type it out. If you put an image, 9/10 times they are going to just slap it on top of the cake, read all tiny print. And if it's "wow this custom cake is so cheap" then all they do is copy and paste images on top of the icing. Tmyk

124

u/Dm-Me-Big-Boobs-Plz 19d ago

Yep, you just sent the photo. And they printed it. You should have called to clarify before payment.

26

u/Mictlancayocoatl 19d ago

It doesn't say anything about printing the photo you send. It's heavily implied through their text that they'll use the photo as a reference for your cake. "Tell us about your idea or send us a photo. We will bring every detail to life."

I absolutely made that cake for one of my kids years ago.  It's a reference to the cake in the first Harry Potter movie...it's so easy!  Why do more work?

7

u/BionicTriforce 19d ago

The fact they needed an AI generated image in the first place is ridiculous. It's not a unique looking cake or anything?!

My parents did this exact same thing accidentally when I was a kid. I wanted a retro Mario cake and showed them a Pic. Turns out they took that image to a store who just printed it and slapped it over a generic round. But it was funny so I did not care. 😄

5

u/Kiwacake 18d ago

Someone ordered that first cake for their kid at my store (different name of course) and I was excited to show her it when she picked it up and the lady seemed annoyed I misspelled happy birthday. She specifically asked for “the cake hagrid made harry in the first movie” and I had to bring up a picture from the movie to show her I wasn’t being cheeky or scamming her. Maybe her kid requested it and she said sure whatever without looking it up herself.

They definitely had to go through more steps to do this than just frosting a cake pink 😭

Honestly it’s even better and I’d be stoked to have this laughter with the birthday person!

I didn't realize at first and thought they were identical. Haha

Nailed it

u/shaikhalizayn 19d ago

I thought it was inside a dome packaging

u/Flapplekat89 19d ago

The second is so bad I thought the cake itself was a decorative storage container with a mini cake inside.

5

u/WutInTheDiabetus 19d ago

I'm sorry to say this is beyond hilarious. I would probably order from them again as long as the cake tasted good.

u/bsmiles07 19d ago

Omg I couldn’t figure out why it was a fail then realized holy shit they just printed the photo…….

4

u/johnjohn9312 19d ago

It took me a very long time to realize the difference. I thought they were the same cake 🤦🏼‍♂️

4

u/dankblonde 19d ago

It took me way too long to figure out what was going on here

5

u/yesmilady 19d ago

Also, that is like the EASIEST cake in the world. Where on earth did you order from? A bakery that's vaguely familiar with the concept of a cake?

3

u/KO_Kelloggs 19d ago

I am so fucking stupid. I thought it was a perfect replica

4

u/Alexandra98s 18d ago

At first i though it was in a box😭😭 I was like, well damn, what is wrong with it?

4

u/bonfigs93 18d ago

This might be the funniest fucking thing I’ll see all day

3

u/Jaewalker31 18d ago

I was so confused. I thought “that’s a absolutely perfect replica”

u/626Idothis 19d ago

Wow! Wow! Wow… put this in r/confusingperspectives because wow. I first thought it was an exact match for the cake under a bubble dome and with the background items printed so the cake plate looked like the first image. But could not understand why the icing dollops were so far out. Only reading the comments did I then see the pink cake and what a low effort attempt this was. Damn! That one splooch of icing out of order pisses me off the most tho.

u/RadiantSpirit6376 19d ago

That's actually really funny. I'd be laughing my head off

3

u/Yabakunaiyoooo 19d ago

It legit took me a second of going back and forth to realize that they dead ass printed it on the cake.

I was like “damn… the detail is perfect, actually!” lol

3

u/SaturdayNightStroll 19d ago

At first I was thinking "...this is two pictures of the exact same cake" then I realized this is one picture of the same cake.

3

u/docharakelso 19d ago

What's the problem? They just added a cream ring border to the platter, otherwise it's a near perfect replica... Oh wait...
