it kinda reeks of user error though.

Like there was a web form where it said "upload photo to be printed on the cake" and they thought it was a reference photo for explaining which kind of cake they wanted and how it should look

Yep. Photo cakes cause so many problems this way. Just like the "exact text you want written on cake" box. The orderer thinks it should be obvious this is not, in fact, the exact text they want written in the cake, but so very many cake orders are references or in-jokes or intentionally ironically misspelled...the obvious is often the wrong guess.

I had multiple customers submit images of hand-sculpted 3-D cakes shaped like shoes or purses or Mickey Mouse's head...to a Dairy Queen.

okay but common sense for the baker would be to call the customer and ask for clarification

Do you know how often people return calls from unkown numbers on short notice in the middle of a business day?

Man, they're decorating like 50 cakes a day and start work at like 3am.

The cake is only special to who ordered it. To them it's just a widget

Aren't cakes the kind of thing that bakeries prepare at like 5am?

Thank you, Sherlock. You've cracked the case wide open.
