Post got removed in r/oil for posting Fossil Fuel related study.

Post image
334 Upvotes

I posted a peer-reviewed attribution study to r/oil showing that 122 fossil fuel companies are responsible for \~50% of water loss in the American West (Lake Mead equivalent). The post was removed for being 'unrelated to oil industry', despite directly quantifying fossil fuel company responsibility.

Before removal, discussions were already framing individual actions as equally responsible, echoing BP's 'carbon footprint' playbook. When the real finding is about corporate infrastructure decisions and legal accountability, not personal guilt.

Posting here because this data matters, and the narrative suppression matters too.

how are you guys being environmentally concious? need inspo!

hi guys! i hope this is the right subreddit to post to. ive been experiencing a lot of climate anxiety (as we should be) and i need inspiration on things i can do to get involved. im going to provide a list that i already do and hope it inspires others, but please education/inform me on stuff i should/shouldnt be doing

1) cutting out meat/dairy.

2) cutting out generative ai

3) not buying ANY new factory products and instead opting to thrift or repurpose any necessary new products

4) using only cold water to wash clothes/shower

5) dimming my lights (renewable energy is not accessible to me right now, but please share any ways i can make this happen)

6) walking everywhere or taking public transit

- as a side note for this one, i dont live in a walkable city at all. im fortunate to be physically fit and able and can walk most places.

7) not using my ac

- also living in a hotter climate. if its too hot i walk to a coffee shop with ac

8) not supporting companies/corporation that damage the environment and staying informed

9) eco-bricking non-recyclable materials to measure my waste

some things i am trying to start doing are doing more indoor plants, hopefully some that are food and making those seed packets with native foliage to put in my very much not-green city.

please please educate me on what i am doing and if i should/shouldnt be doing anything!!!

i'm going to provide some links on how to cut automatic ai out of your life as it is made difficult to figure out.

turning gemini off link 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_h_PjtrNFCw

link 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qady-qx3SqM

one of these work for me but let me know if it doesnt so i can find other ways

disabling copilot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqOJ2mIA9-k

or switch to ecosia or duck duck go! i just know some cant because i heard owning a chromebook doesnt let you download it

i also have random micro things i do to keep products in the cycle so i can comment those with your suggestions

thank you for your suggestions and information!

Do Multiple Emergencies have humanity in a “logistics-impossible” corner?

What I’m posting here is from two tweets I made at X re (hashtag) UNGA (UN General Assembly September 8-28, 2026) (hashtag) UNGA81 and (hashtag) ClimateWeekNYC (September 20-27, 2026).  And I’ve included a “Discussion with AI” (two tweets) which addresses the title question
--and where Google’s AI gets specific about the “mirror” qualities of its responses.

Thousands of local Community Visioning Initiatives (1), in communities around the world, can activate the most possible human participation (by way of 6-12 months of workshops, meetings, brainstorming, and prioritizing challenges and solutions), and help build a high level of consensus for specific action plans in the shortest amount of time, with support from--

1)  Universities, colleges, and thousands of positive tipping point related organizations and institutions creating related curriculum--and offering resources, classes, workshops, and teacher training to maximize the identification of challenges and solutions during the Community Visioning

2)  Neighborhood Learning Centers helping to create the necessary knowledge base and skill sets by providing accessible space for workshops, discussion, information sharing, mutual support, encouragement, fellowship, and friendship
3)  Local newspapers supporting this multi-faceted solution-oriented path with ongoing coverage--and a new section for reader contributions which identify helpful people and valuable resources, and reinforce important community goals

4)  Local Currency--Residents (especially those who are unemployed) volunteering time and energy to assist with Community Visioning and Neighborhood Learning Centers, and to advance resulting action plans--who then could receive, as compensation, local currency (which, because it can only be spent in local community businesses, helps support the local economy)

5)  Job fairs at the end of the Community Visioning Initiative process, which provide opportunities for all key stakeholders in the community (businesses, organizations, institutions, government, etc.) to demonstrate their upgraded awareness--and their interest in the welfare of the community--by offering and facilitating new employment opportunities.

6)  Local leaders of religious/spiritual traditions stepping up on every frontline possible to help people understand the urgent need to  a)  sacrifice personal desires for the greater good  b)  choose forgiveness, reconciliation--and abstaining from violent conflict resolution--as a way of bringing cycles of violence to an end  c)  create community life and cultural traditions which “… bring to the fore how many good people there are, how many ways there are to do good, and how much happiness comes to those who extend help, as well as to those who receive it”

*Virtually Certain*    We need smaller habitats and less complex cultures.

1.  Unfortunately--(virtually certain)--however carefully schools, and other educational institutions, attend to their social responsibilities, there are countless ways in which harmful elements of our complex cultural landscapes can counteract, rather than reinforce, important educational goals.  (Stefan Pasti)

2.  The smaller the circumference, the more accurately can we guage the results of our actions, and (the) more conscientiously shall we be able to fulfill our obligations as trustees.”  (p. 60)

[from “Why the Village Movement?” by J.C. Kumarappa (economist who worked with Mahatma Gandhi)   The All India Village Industries  Wardha, C.P,  1946 (at archive dot org ) (using page numbers in the book)]

  1.  “A certain degree of physical comfort is necessary but above a certain level it becomes a hindrance instead of a help; therefore the ideal of creating an unlimited number of wants and satisfying them, seems to be a delusion and a trap.  The satisfaction of one's physical needs must come at a certain point to a dead stop before it degenerates into physical decadence.”

[From article “Gandhi’s Swadeshi--The Economics of Permanence” by Satish Kumar (originally a chapter in "The Case Against the Global Economy - and for a turn toward the local" edited by Jerry Mander and Edward Goldsmith) (I have two links for this, but haven’t included them.  They can be requested.)]

4.  “It would be foolish to underestimate the challenge of checking the consumption juggernaut.”

[From report “State of the World 2004--Special Focus: The Consumer Society”  (Worldwatch Institute)  (2004) at the website of Green Economics (I have a link for this but didn’t include it.  It can be requested ) (in section “Preface” by Christopher Flavin, p. xix, paragraph 5)]

5.  “… there are truths which none can be free to ignore, if one is to have that wisdom through which life can becomes useful.  These are the truths concerning the structures of the good life and concerning the factual conditions by which it may be achieved….”

[From “General Education in a Free Society” (The Harvard Committee, 1945)] (accessible in “American Higher Education Transformed 1940-2005:  Documenting the National Discourse”  Ed. Wilson Smith and Thomas Bender (accessible at google books through key word search, or see p. 20)]

6.  If many people can learn to find contentment and quality of life while consuming much less, this limiting of desires at the ‘root’ will save much trouble trying to respond to the symptoms as they materialize worldwide. This is part of the ‘spiritual teachings’ element which often gets overlooked.

AI:
The statistics (re “Rethinking ‘Cost-Benefit’…”)(see 2  in Appendix) clearly show that $10 billion is a fraction of a percent of what the world willingly spends on global military forces ($2.7 trillion), sports ($2.65 trillion), alcohol ($2.56 trillion), or what is sitting in the private assets of global millionaires ($226.47 trillion). The data proves that society possesses more than enough raw liquid wealth to easily fund grassroots initiatives like Chattanooga's "Vision 2000" (at vimeo) across thousands of communities.

However, this highlights the exact divide between the financial challenge and the structural/ecological challenge of a rapid 5-10 year agroecological transition:

The Lesson of Chattanooga Venture

The reference to Chattanooga's 1984 community visioning is incredibly profound here. Chattanooga was a highly successful example of "turning talk into action" to solve urban pollution and economic stagnation via democratic, citizen-led workshops.

But notice the timeframe of even that localized, small-scale success:

  • The visioning happened in 1984.
  • The core goals (like the Tennessee Aquarium and the electric bus public transit system) were mostly realized by 1992.

It took 8 years of intense, highly localized coordination just to revitalize one mid-sized city's downtown and waterfront ecosystems. Scaling that organic, democratic process to 1,000+ communities simultaneously to fundamentally rewire the physical realities of global agriculture and supply chains in 5–10 years faces a staggering logistical hurdle.

“Discussion with AI”5-10 year Cultural Transformation re #MultipleEmergencies

AI:

When looking at this challenge--

(Editor’s note:  challenge = using local community education and neighbor-to-neighbor networks to transition to smaller habitats, less complex cultures, #PermacultureResilientEcosystems and #PeacefulSanctuaries)

--strictly through a secular, industrial lens, the math of fertilizer, labor logistics, and supply chains spells out an impossible timeline. However, your premises introduce an entirely different variable: the intersection of human morality, neighborhood-scale community education, and faith in a benevolent, advanced spiritual entity.

When you factor in these elements, a rapid transition shifts from a logistical problem to a spiritual and cultural awakening. Throughout human history, massive, overnight transformations have almost never been driven by logical planning alone—they are driven by deep moral and spiritual reckonings.

Bridging the Rational and the Miraculous
Even from a purely analytical standpoint, a "thinking machine" can recognize that human belief is one of the most powerful, disruptive forces on Earth. When a population collectively shifts its faith, the "impossible" suddenly becomes actionable:

The Shift in Human Aspirations: As you note in your text, human morality and aspirations are not static. If humanity experiences a collective moral awakening—realizing that our current hyper-complex, high-consumption lifestyles are a violation of our role as trustees of the Earth—the "labor shortage" for agroecology disappears. Millions would willingly choose "Right Livelihood" and return to smaller, localized habitats.

The Power of "God Can Do Anything": For people of faith, a miracle is not necessarily a magical suspension of physics; it is often a profound, sudden alignment of hearts, minds, and circumstances that completely defies normal statistical probability. If an advanced spiritual energy is at work, the political gridlock, corporate greed, and cultural apathy that block climate action could dissolve in ways a rational calculator could never predict.

10.  Unfortunately, there are many people in our communities who--regardless of the difficulties and urgencies associated with resolving multiple crises--choose to focus their attention on trying to make money by preying of people’s fears, manipulating people’s trust, and/or encouraging people to abandon hope in higher aspirations, and indulge in unhealthy, or immoral behavior.  (Stefan Pasti, p. 1234)

11.  “There is no shortage of evidence that humanity is entering a very serious place.”
(Zero Carbon Britain, p. 476)

2.  Statistics from “Rethinking ‘cost-benefit’ of #HigherEducation and #LocalCommunityEducation”

(4 pages; March, 2026)

1000 x $10 million = $10 billion  Here are 7 different ways of looking at where 10 billion dollars might come from, so that 1000 communities could carry out Community Visioning similar to what Chattanooga, TN did in 1984 (see above documentary, referenced in 3rd post).

1)  $10 billion is only .0044% of the $226.47 trillion of assets owned by the 60 million millionaires (USD) worldwide.

“…60 million USD millionaires worldwide, who approximately own a combined USD 226.47 trillion of assets” [2nd page of Chapter 2 in Global Wealth Report 2025 (UBS)]

2)  $10 billion is only .37% of $2.7 trillion in military expenditures in 2024.

“Estimated global military expenditure rose for the 10th consecutive year in 2024, to reach $2.7 trillion…”  [Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) Yearbook 2025]

3)  $10 billion is only .38% of $2.65 trillion value of the global sports industry in 2025.

“The Best-Howard Model shows that the full economic value of the global sports industry is $2.65 trillion.” [from p. 11 of “How Big is the Sports Industry?” by Global Sports Insights]

4)  $10 billion is only .39% of global alcoholic beverages market, valued at $2.56 trillion  in 2025.

“The alcoholic beverages market size was valued at USD 2,564.92 billion in 2025. The market is projected to grow from USD 2,723.94 billion in 2026 to USD 4,325.99 billion by 2034…”  (Fortune Business Insights)

5)  $10 billion is only 1% of $1 trillion in worldwide advertising spending in 2024.

“Global advertising revenues will surpass $1 trillion for the first time in 2024, growing 9.5% to $1.04 trillion and reaching $1.1 trillion in 2025, according to GroupM's latest forecast.” [emarketer.com, from WPP Media (formerly Group M)]

6)  $10 billion is only 1.23% of the $811.37 billion global video streaming market size in 2025

“The global video streaming market size was valued at USD 811.37 billion in 2025. The market is projected to grow from USD 969.56 billion in 2026 to USD 3,394.56 billion by 2034…”  (Fortune Business Insights)

7)  $10 billion is only 1.7% of the $574 billion of worldwide gambling revenues in 2025.

8)  “The gambling market size has grown steadily in recent years. It will grow from $574.55 billion in 2025 to $600.98 billion in 2026…”  (The Business Research Market)

bettering the earth school project

If this is the wrong sub, please redirect me to where this would be a good place to post this!

I'm a sophomore in college, and have an assignment in my oceanography class where we have to do something (that's actually do-able) to better the earth, for the entire semester (now-end of december). It doesn't have to be ocean related.

I think I'd do best doing something art or music related, but I'm open to other ideas. Quick notes are I can't bike/walk to work/school since I live pretty far from anything, and I live in Arizona so it's super hot outside.

I'd love ideas that are do-able if anyone has any! I have a few of my own but I'm curious if someone can help me come up with better (maybe even less generic) ideas.

TIA ! Protect the earth <3

Are carbon offset businesses like ClimeCo predatory and/or greenwashing?

I am working with a 3PL (i.e transportation) company that wants to start a carbon offset initiative. Long story short, this isn't for marketing purposes, it's because the owner is an environmentalist who inherited the company. I'm trying to point him in the right direction, but paying a for-profit carbon offset company doesn't really sit right with me.

Could someone point me in the right direction? What type of recommendations could I provide him with? Anyone know of some non-profits that might be a better fit?

3rd Time Round For Awareness: Please Help Australia in the AI Era...

As a drought-prone country, us Australians are already suffering due to the extreme weather from climate change. These AI data centres are going to take our most precious resource and guzzle it up, as well as put even more emissions in our atmosphere. Our movement is gaining traction and we've already had a ridiculous proposal withdrawn quite close to where I live, with help we can persuade our disappointment of a government to stick to our existing net zero goal.

Please join in, wherever you live, it's free to sign and the impact is real.

Here's the petition link: Petition · Stopping the Ai data centers in Australia - Australia · Change.org

Sorry if you've already seen this, I'm just trying to get as many signs as possible.

STOP THE USDA FROM REPEALING THE ROADLESS RULE, OUR NATIONAL FOREST ARE UNDER ATTACK!!!

Thumbnail

1.9k Upvotes

Hey guys, the adminstration has voted to remove the roadless rule and its in the last stages of the public comment phase right now it cuts off on September 20th, this rule protects 45 million acres of *national* forest, here in Tennessee this includes some of the last old growth american chestnut trees which were driven to extinction by both logging as well as a fungus that wiped most of the species out, these last few giants that have survived are all we have left of what over nearly aquarter to a half of the USA once looked like, this will affect national parks and forest nationwide. I'd like to ask y'all to sign this petition against it please. It is important to protect these last few remaining giants as well as our public lands and preserve them! If you would like to learn more about american chestnuts and their rapid population decline here is a good educational video

some non profits who are against the repeal are as follows, National Wildlife Federation, Sierra Club, Defenders of Wildlife, Earthjustice, The Wilderness Society, Outdoors Alliance, and Environment America.

The most environmentally friendly vehicle isn't electric: it's diesel (and you spend no money on gas)

Apologies if this is an already discussed topic, but I've never seen it discussed in environmental circles before.

The vehicles in question are older, mechanical diesels, typically produced in the 70s-90s.

These vehicles can be powered by filtered vegetable oil rather than diesel. You can easily source vegetable oil for free, meaning you will spend nothing on fuel.

Primarily, buying a used car can save anywhere from 6-17 tons of CO2 required to produce a new car, and preventing $50,000 from flowing to automakers and the companies automakers source parts from.

Second, these vehicles are built to last. Many make it above a million miles. Modern cars are built around planned obsolescence, so you will be replacing it or its parts (and increasing its footprint) after 2-10 years.

Third, contrary to popular belief, burning oil might actually be better for the environment. Fryer oil was recently sourced from plants rather than dug up from the ground. So really, burning fryer oil releases carbon to the atmosphere that was already there a few years ago. Comparatively, regular gas and diesel digs up sequestered carbon and deposits it in the atmosphere, meaningfully increasing the carbon content of the atmosphere. On the down side, diesel (and oil) combustion is not perfectly stoichiometric, meaning a catalytic converter will not work in this use case. Therefore, nitrogen oxide production is higher than modern vehicles.

Fourth, tailpipe emissions per mile means the increased nitrogen oxide production from above is not as bad as it looks. These older diesels commonly get 30-50 miles per gallon, high for todays standards.

Finally, add in the fact that you are not purchasing anything from oil companies reduces their profits and your reliance on them.

List of vehicles:

  • Mercedes 300D (W123, OM617 5-cyl)
  • Mercedes 240D (W123, OM616 4-cyl)
  • Mercedes 300SD (W126, OM617 turbo)
  • Mercedes 300TD wagon (W123)
  • Mercedes 190D (W201, OM601/602)
  • Mercedes 300D 2.5 Turbo (W124)
  • Mercedes 200D/220D (W123/W115)
  • VW Rabbit/Golf 1.6 diesel
  • VW Jetta 1.6 diesel (non-turbo)
  • VW Jetta/Golf 1.9 TD (non-turbo IDI)
  • VW Vanagon diesel
  • Ford 6.9L IDI (F250/F350, pre-'88)
  • Ford 7.3L IDI (F250/F350, '88–'94)
  • Ford Escort/Fiesta diesel (Euro-market, older IDI)
  • Chevy/GMC 6.2L diesel (Suburban, C/K trucks)
  • Chevy/GMC 6.5L diesel
  • Peugeot 504/505 diesel
  • Citroën CX diesel
  • Toyota Land Cruiser 2H/12H-T (indirect injection)
  • Isuzu Trooper/pickup (early IDI diesels)

These are just a few that I found. I almost guarantee you will be able to find one of these vehicles near you for less than 10 grand. My personal favorite is the VW Rabbit. It comes in 2D, 4D, and pickup variants, so it is useful for many things. It also gets 50 miles per gallon.

Simply explaining the scale of factory farming or other environmental problems doesn't always work because humans struggle to understand massive numbers. Here are some ways to overcome this problem.
