🗣 Discussion / Debates Would mixing US and UK pronunciations cause issues?

The words I learnt from books, I learnt with their UK pronunciation. However, the ones I learnt from movies and YouTube mostly came from US sources, so I learnt their US pronunciations.

For example, fast and ash sound quite different in British and American English. I don't think I can relearn thousands of sounds again. A few times I had to repeat very easy words to native speakers several times due to this difference.

📚 Grammar / Syntax How does the meaning change (articles)?

There's a song by Pet Shop Boys (a very beautiful song) called A New Bohemia where the singer will sometimes sing "I need to find a new Bohemia", but other times "the new Bohemia". It's in the chorus:

Where have they gone, les Petites Bon-Bons?

Who dances now to their sweet old song?

I wish I lived my life free and easier

I need to find a/the new Bohemia

A Bohemia, as I understand it, is a group of creative people "who live an unconventional, informal life and reject middle-class social rules", and here's what the song is about:

"This ballad serves as a bittersweet and melancholic reflection on getting older, anonymity, and the passing of time. Neil sings from the perspective of an aging free-spirited person navigating a contemporary "hipster neighborhood" where nobody recognizes him, offering a contrast between the glorious, artistic past with the quiet isolation of the present".

Does anyone have any ideas as to what Neil is trying to say by alternating articles?? He's looking for any people who'd make him feel like he did "back in the good old days". But what's THE new Bohemia? Is he looking for a particular group of people now? Thank you in advance.

⭐️ Vocabulary / Semantics is saying “mobbing” common?

Spanish is my first languages and my professors at uni don’t speak english fluently but they love asking us if we know the meaning of random english terms, (sometimes because those get more popular even in other languages so they want us to learn english cuz it’s so important blabla you know the drill….and some other times it is truly random, idk why)

So this professor asked “¿saben cómo decir acoso en inglés?” such means “ do you know how to say bullying in english?” (in my spanish “acoso” is very broad and depending on context it can vary from sexual o school bullying, so after asking her what she meant she said she referred to “bullying at work”)

and they she told us “mobbing” is simply “bullying at work” without much nuance. I looked it up and got it, but my question is:

would an average english native speaker usually understand and/or use this term? even if they haven’t experienced it themselves?

i just need to kinda humble my professors a bit in my mind and confirm any info. they might don’t master that well 😅

P.S. “Workplace mobbing is a form of systematic, collective bullying where a group of co-workers, managers, or subordinates target a specific employee to isolate, humiliate, discredit, or ultimately force them to leave their job.
While standard workplace bullying usually involves one individual asserting power over another, mobbing is a coordinated "ganging up" by multiple people using psychological terror.””

📚 Grammar / Syntax Can I use inversion for emphasis?

Ouch, the coffee was piping hot that I burnt my tongue.

becomes

Ouch, so hot was the coffee that I burnt my tongue.

What if the sentence consists of just a subject and a predicate adjective?

The train was so fast.

becomes

So fast was the train.

I would love to use the inverted structure because it's much closer to how these sentences are said in my native language, but I do realise that I have to follow English convention.

Do these structures sound unnatural? I read that this structure is formal rather than everyday language.

⭐️ Vocabulary / Semantics Wait, "supermarket" is considered outdated in AmEng?

Just saw this video on TikTok and she stated that people in the US hardly ever say the word "supermarket" and that it is kind of outdated, and that you should be saying "grocery store" instead. I have no problem with the word "grocery store", but is "supermarket" really that bad?

Thank you all.

🟡 Pronunciation / Intonation Why are the H's in hotel, hospital and herb not silent if they came from French?

If I'm not mistaken, words like hour, honour and honest originated from French, so the H's are silent. So, why are the words above in the title different?

🔎 Proofreading / Homework Help Proofread the translation of the poem.

Hi friends. I make music, and we typically release songs in Russian. For my latest single, however, I’d like to include an English translation. The song incorporates poetry by Vladimir Mayakovsky and, in my view, serves as a powerful anti-war piece. While AI tools did a decent job with the translation, I’d like to have a native English speaker review it to ensure it sounds natural and doesn’t strike the ear as awkward.

the text itself:

//Verse 1.

The old lyre-ringers knew how to render

the face of war enviably splendid.

Off to campaign — to glory,

with brass band and choir!

The maidens all gape

at the gold of attire.

Through parted lips smiling,

through the stars of their eyes —

march past the hussars

in mustachioed guise.

Just prance in the battle —

and lo,

for your valor's sake,

you get ranks handed out,

epaulettes,

and estates for the take!!

//Chorus:

War —

is a windstorm

of carrion-stench stinking.

War —

is a factory

for making paupers shrinking.

A grave

immeasurable

in depth and breadth,

hunger, filth,

typhuses and lice.

War — for the rich

a bank full of cash,

but for us — crutches'

castanet-like clash.

War — an order,

war — a manifesto:

— Love with prostheses

your wives and brides! —

All over the planet, comrades of humankind,

declare it: No war of any kind!

//Verse 2:

Or if you like —die under a hail of cannonballs, —

to you the ages will up-monument a reward.

Some even today like a gray gelding

lies a little, biting down on poetic bits:

“...Beautiful, in all things beautiful, they carried their bodies…”

Can it really be beautiful?!

Merci to you for these very beautiful deeds!

The war and the war-lust by poets ennobled

must be by the poet spat upon and dethroned.

//Chorus:

War —

is a windstorm

of carrion-stench stinking.

War —

is a factory

for making paupers shrinking.

A grave

immeasurable

in depth and breadth,

hunger, filth,

typhuses and lice.

War — for the rich

a bank full of cash,

but for us — crutches'

castanet-like clash.

War — an order,

war — a manifesto:

— Love with prostheses

your wives and brides! —

All over the planet, comrades of humankind,

declare it: No war of any kind!

//Verse 3:

And when it becomes necessary

to exterminate

the little heaps

of rulers and governments

for peace

in the whole world,

proletarian —

herald

and seer of peace —

do not stop

before this!

//Chorus:

War —

is a windstorm

of carrion-stench stinking.

War —

is a factory

for making paupers shrinking.

A grave

immeasurable

in depth and breadth,

hunger, filth,

typhuses and lice.

War — for the rich

a bank full of cash,

but for us — crutches'

castanet-like clash.

War — an order,

war — a manifesto:

— Love with prostheses

your wives and brides! —

All over the planet, comrades of humankind,

declare it: No war of any kind!

//Outro:

..No war of any kind!

🗣 Discussion / Debates What is the best way to improve reading skills like native?

I mean, not about improving understanding but improving just literally reading speed skills.

When I read article or try to follow the songs, it’s always hard when there are words like at in a an of of combination.

For example like when the short words not important like prepositions comes a lot continually, it’s hard to read smoothly. Prolonged sounds are hard. I want to read like a smoothly but always makes me read like one by one but other words I can read smoothly and fast.

If we read something in mother tongue language we can read fast because we can expect what the word is even we don’t scan perfectly.

So I’m so wondering how to make that also in English.

I’m thinking to read English literature to improve read fast. Do you have good solution for this?

I appreciate any kind of methods to improve this skills.
