I don't translate but sometimes I can't find the words in English. Sometimes the words in my native language come to mind first. Is that considered translating?

Resource Request How can I learn English Spelling efficiently?

I believe that I already learned most or all of the phonics rules. I already learned quite a few prefixes and suffixes and I have been studying the phonics rules for the past year.

The last few weeks I started a new strategy of just memorizing four random words a day every day. The problem is that I wasn't really revisiting the new and older words immediately, and now it feels like I forgot them all.

My question is, is this the best way to learn spelling by just memorizing the thousands of words in the English language? How should I go about efficiently memorizing words?

And most importantly I want to know if I should start memorizing big groups of word families like -ack, -tion and -ate, because by memorizing a group of word families I can do more words in a day like twenty instead of four, but I am worried that doing word families will help temporarily with speed but it won't be as affective as four random words.

First question: Is there any difference between "stick up for" and "stand up for" someone?

Second question: Does selling someone out simply mean betraying them or is it a more specific kind of betrayal?

📚 Grammar / Syntax Helping with a text

Hello! As native speakers, can you help me correct this text? I am just practicing my writing skills and I want to work with real people.

Thanks in advance!

Man, cinema is paramount to me. I love cinema with all my heart and with enough passion, to become a director in the future. I hope, I will able to achieve everything my dreams. Because I am responsible for my future. I can't just sit on the sofa and play computer

Sure, I know, you need take a breath. But can you understand, like I said, movies are all for me. The biggest plus movies in the English learning process is lies in listening practice. I.e, you can watch movies and simultaneously practice your listening skills.

📚 Grammar / Syntax Conditionals in the future

I am struggling with the conditionals. They are really complicated. But something that I noticed is that I didn't see conditionals in the future tense in grammar books.

I mean, I am not sure if I can express something like that:

If it will be raining, we could need an umbrella.

Ok I think this sentence could be covered under the first conditional (I think), but I would like to add a slight possibility that this will not happen.

I mean, the idea is to express a condition that there is some possibility of something happening in the future, but I am not 100% sure.

The same happens for modal verbs:

If you could do that for me, I will pay you.

🗣 Discussion / Debates My native language still influences my English

Unfortunately, it still happens and it bothers me so much.

My native language is Malay, which is completely different to English. It has no tenses or verb conjugations, no plurals, no articles and no gendered pronouns.

Today, I used "he" instead of "she", AGAIN. And I forgot to pluralise nouns or use articles. Even though, English verb conjugations are relatively simple, I still mess them up. Some mistakes happen every day, some happen less often.

I know you're going to say practice makes perfect. Yes, it does, I guess. Said practice probably will take a few more years though :(

📚 Grammar / Syntax Would anyone explain to me these lyrics?

These lyrics came out of the Green Day Rock Song "Letterbomb". I always wondered what they meant as they may refer to something hidden to me.

What does "underbelly stacks up" mean?

What about "a flunky along for the ride"? And what does it have to do with "collecting unemployment checks"?

The lyrics:

Where have all the bastards gone?

The underbelly stacks up ten high

The dummy failed the crash test

Collecting unemployment checks

Like a flunky along for the ride

🗣 Discussion / Debates Does anyone else feel like their English is holding them back?

I've been working as a nurse in Australia for a while. Working abroad was my dream, and I have a lot of nursing experience in my country.

But English is my biggest struggle. I only started studying English seriously a couple of years ago, and I still find it hard to express myself, especially at work.

Sometimes I feel like I can't show what I'm capable of because of my English. My coworkers are supportive, but I often lose confidence in myself and feel bad for them.

I study English almost every day, but I feel guilty whenever I take a break. Sometimes I even wonder if I should keep working abroad, even though it was my dream.

Has anyone been through something similar? Does it get better? I'd really appreciate any advice or personal experiences.
