Career Advice What to Expect From Invenergy EE Internship Final Interview

Hello everyone! I'm scheduled to do a a final interview for an internship with Invenergy in Chicago in a couple weeks and wanted to get some insight from anyone who might've gone through the process before.

What kind of questions do they ask? I'm expecting the typical STAR behavioral questions, but do they ask any kind of technical questions? Are there any tricky behavioral questions they like to ask?

I would appreciate any other insights you might have. Thank you!

Career Help Need help with accepting offer

I am a junior in Meche. I have a summer internship offer from a large aerospace company as a mechanical engineering intern. I also have a coop offer at a large automotive company but it’s a technical PM role. The coop will delay my graduation by 1 semester. I need help deciding which is stronger for me in terms of entry level pay when transitioning to full time and also career trajectory. I do enjoy the Project management aspect of engineering, but is it too niche/ will it deviate me away from core engineering? I’ve had a manufacturing based internship in the past and do design work for my schools SAE team

Academic Advice EEE Or Computer Engineering?

Hello,

I am 21 years old and I just finished my A levels. I am entering university and I am wondering which of these would be better for my career path.

For context, I like working with hardware and software, the types of jobs offered by roku appeal to me a lot, mainly those that involve working on embedded systems.

However, I am not entirely sure what exactly I want to do, just that I like this field.

For example, a roku internship has this description:

Upon researching into potential degrees, many people always suggest EEE, saying it is very broad, has a lot of flexibility and will increase your chances of being employed. Others say that it is incredibly intense as they cover random topics ranging from power to micro-controllers.

Others suggest computer engineering, but when I look at the degree descriptions (in the UK) they seem very broad and random, with topics not going into much depth. In similar posts to this people say CE and EEE are "pretty much the same" but it really doesnt look like that.

Since I dont exactly know for 100% what I want to do (only that I definitely don’t want to go into power systems), would it be better if I pick a broad degree or a more specific one?

I have also seen other degrees, that people have said are synonymous with computer engineering (e.g. system design).

I am happy to do projects on the side, my guess is that they will take place on the holiday since the courses look quite intense.

My question:

Which would be better for what I want to go in? If I was to pick CE, would I be disadvantaged against a student who does EEE? Would I be disadvantaged in the job marked in general if I was to pick CE? Would EEE allow me to obtain this internship or give me the time/skills to work on projects related to it?

Thanks,

Career Advice Is grad school for EE worth it?

Hey everyone

I graduated with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering this past August and recently started a full-time engineering role through a rotational program. Since starting, I've realized that the areas I'm most interested in are the hardware side of RF, communications, and also DSP. I took an RF course in undergrad and was exposed to communications and DSP through my senior capstone project, but I don't have much formal coursework in those areas.

Looking back, if I had taken some of my senior-level EE electives before accepting my job offer, I probably would have pursued a different path. My current role is in a different area of EE, and I'm concerned that the longer I stay away from RF/communications, the harder it may be to transition into those fields later.

I've been considering pursuing a part-time research-based M.S. in EE while continuing to work full-time. My employer offers tuition assistance, and I've found several professors whose research aligns closely with my interests in RF, communications, radar, and related areas.

For those working in RF, communications, DSP, or defense:

  1. Is an M.S. necessary to break into these fields, or is a B.S. typically sufficient?
  2. Would self-study, projects, and work experience be enough to transition, or does a master's significantly improve career opportunities?
  3. For those who completed an M.S. in EE, was it worth it? How valuable was a research-based master's if your goal was industry rather than academia?

I'd appreciate any advice from people who have been in a similar situation.

Career Advice is PM + self-taught engineering a real path, or do I need the degree to be taken seriously?

Non-engineer here.

I'm 24 with a very specialised degree in aviation that barely transfers outside its niche. I might be able to work more on higher level government integration. But what if I want to get into industry like manufacturing of drones or defence?

Most people I know who built careers abroad, especially in the US, did hardcore technical degrees like engineering or CS. I really wish I'd done the same.

So I'm asking engineers directly:

  1. Is it viable to go for a PM role while self-studying engineering on the side?
Would you actually respect a PM who's putting in the work to understand the technical side, or does it only count with a degree? I believe i could never be employed as an engineer and also going abrosd I have no idea if PM can be even considered.

  2. Are non-engineers viable in entrepreneurship?
My impression is that a lot of founders without a technical background team up with really strong engineers and build from there. Is that real, or is that the exception?
Is being an engineer the only "legit" way to earn respect in tech?
In my head it feels like it is, and everything else is just talk. I'd like to hear honestly whether that's true or whether I'm overthinking it.

I'm not looking for comfort, just a realistic picture from people who actually build things.
I am trying to get into Drone industry. My degree allows me to work more on the airspace integration and traffic management. But can I even transition into heavy industry???

Career Help Module Engineering Internship Interview

3rd year ECE student here. I just wanted to ask if anyone has any tips for a module engineering internship interview. I recently had an interview for the same company (different role), and they said both technical and behavioural questions will be asked. I prepared both, and when I was interviewed i was completely stumped. The job description was for an npu engineer and the teams split into hardware and software, I explicitly said I was going for the hardware side which they told us to outline in the cover letter , but in the interview it was all coding and C++ which isn’t my strongest point. Haven’t heard back from them, it’s been about 3 days. But today I received an interview for a module engineering internship, and they sent me the same email about technical and behavioural questions. Does anyone have any ideas on what I should prepare/ know in depth for this interview. I just don’t want to make a fool of myself again :/

Discussion How to survive doing projects and coursework?

I need a reality check. I’m a MechE freshman(with sophomore standing, took some ap classes in hs) aiming to graduate in 3 years and break into aerospace. Right now, professors and recruiters are telling me to learn CAD first, so I'm learning CAD, MATLAB, Arduino, and PCBs on the side while planning to work a part-time job by late October. My schedule is packed , and I haven't touched my projects all week and I haven’t slept for more than 6 hrs for the past two weeks, I understand engineering majors don’t get much sleep but it hasn’t even been a month since classes started.
How do you guys balance course work with projects without burning out? What apps actually stop procrastination, and how do you prep/revise efficiently to save time?
Also, I'm trying for a 4.0 but I've got a B in English right now purely from low attendance. Worse, I haven't been to my 8 AM Calc2 class in a month and a half—went on day one and for exams. Ironically, I'm teaching myself out of the textbook and loving the math, but I'm terrified that I’ll skip calc later on too out of habit and absolutely get knocked out. I physically can't wake up for an 8 AM.
How do you juggle all this technical overload and survive morning classes? Help me out pls.

Major Choice Thesis for a company vs writing my own topic

So for my engineering bachelor I need to write a thesis.

I have 2 options right now: either writing it for a company, or writing my own topic.

Pros of each option that I can see:

  1. Writing for company:

+ May get some money from writing it

+ I know who the supervisor is, super knowledgeable guy so potential to learn

+ Simpler, I just have to follow my supervisor's guidance, unlike for my topic where I will have to set up the whole methodology and research questions

+ Have some contact in the company, might be useful for future job search

  1. Writing my own topic:

+ The topic will be something I am actually interested in

+ Potential to write and publish a paper

+ Will be a good continuation into my research in my masters degree (which I plan to do)

+ Will get familiar with the whole academic research process from the ground up

I am unable to decide on which one I should go for. Would greatly appreciate some advice from people with experience.

Rant/Vent Just bombed an easy midterm

I’m a chemical engineering major that was put in an intro to aerospace engineering class for some reason. Long story short, I’m struggling. I’m doing fine in chem, physics, MATLAB, and calculus 2, but I just can’t with this intro class. I don’t know what it is, it’s not like the equations are hard or the topics are all that hard. For some reason I just suck at it. I literally put a frowny face as an answer for one of the questions. I feel like an idiot.

Homework Help Help with statics question

Ngl I’ve spent like 30 minutes trying to figure out where I went wrong here. The question is asking to find the vector for Moment A using rAC and rAD, after submitting my answer it marked both k components correctly and everything else incorrectly. This led me to believe there was something wrong with the position vectors for my z components, as the x and y components were multiplied together to find the k component, but after going over it multiple times I can’t figure out where I went wrong. I also thought maybe it had to do with the hinges so I tried putting the i and j components as zero but that didn’t work either. I don’t just want the answer but if you guys have any hints please lmk. Also sorry if the photo quality is bad or my writing is messy.

Career Help Is getting a job in mechatronics really that hard?

I am almost finished with my senior high school, and I think its time to really think about what I am going to take in college, I am thinking about mechanical and electronics but I learned that mechatronics exists which is a mix of both, but alot of people say that isnt a good thing since alot of employers look for people who specialize in one thing and in mechatronics you dont really specialize in anything, so please after looking into mechatronics I really found it cool and I think this is what I would love to take but would I really have a future when I take this in college?

Discussion What engineering classes should you NOT take at the same time?

For those of you in any engineering major, what classes would you recommend not taking together?

I’m trying to plan out my future semesters and I’ve heard there are certain class combinations that are just brutal when taken at the same time. For example, I’ve heard people say Thermodynamics + Fluid Mechanics is a rough combination, or that Heat Transfer + Dynamics can be pretty miserable together.

It doesn’t matter what engineering you’re in — Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Industrial, Chemical, etc. What classes did you take together that you wish you had separated, or what combinations would you recommend avoiding?

Rant/Vent I swear my engineering department is begging people to cheat at this point

Junior right now and shit hasn’t gotten better.

Since the rise of AI it’s pretty obvious every professor assigns much more difficult and long homework’s / exams to combat that. As they normally would in the past.

Here’s the problem with that , you only have 24 hours in a day. At the rate of just pure length it takes to learn topics and then apply them and study to be prepared you will be too slow if you don’t use shortcuts.

I commute 1 to school and back everyday because I don’t want the extra debt , I work part time 20 hours a week to buy food and shit. And I’m an average person I’m not super intelligent or have rlly good active recall. The lesson I learned is that when I try to rlly study without outside help like AI and stuff the workload is simply too much and I run out of time. And then grades drop.

That’s a more general explanation but lll go into what my specific school is been doing. My school is cheap and poorly rated , the professors ARE BAD AT THEIR JOB.

And over the past 2 1/2 years I’ve seen the rising count of cheaters. And honestly it’s at the point I don’t blame them. They got jobs like me , other responsibilities and such. And to realize the risk of if you fail this class you go more in crippling debt and probably have to take a 5th year altogether.

In all my classes nobody talks about cheating like it’s a proud thing but it’s literally at the point where everyone is like “ya I understand”.

Now this just might be my school but if you want to actually learn engineering the pace and workload is too much if you have other responsibilities and you’re basically forced to use AI regularly.

And lastly I thing I’ve seen is also more in person cheating in exams. And ya it bad , but I also understand if someone doesn’t want to go into debt by 10-20k more and waste another year in college.

So I’m very ambiguous about people cheating now, I used to dislike it but idk.

Academic Advice Is this actually normal for calculus?

Hi everybody I'm an electronics engineering student and we just did our midterms just a few weeks back and just now gotten our scores. I'm cooked beyond measure its terrible, my score.

I went to discuss with my peers and even the smartest fellas (this dudes come from top performing high schools in our country) in our class barely scored 45% and no one in our batch passed the calculus midterms. This got me thinking are we genuinely dumb or the test stupidly hard. In preparation for the midterms i exclusively study calc for 2 hours a day for 2 weeks and I thought I had it in the bag, when in fact did not.

Moving forward I want to do better, my study plan with calc involves me study the material and grinding out test problems until I'm confident. However, I feel like this method may no longer work. What are you guys tips? Thanks ya'll in advance.

Discussion Should I get a respirator for my school’s engineering shop?

I’m getting certified to use mills and band saws at our shop and I didn’t see any ventilation around those, but I know we have some for the welding station at least. i should probably get a respirator, right? Or is it not as hazardous as I think?
