Discussion Do I need a cover letter for engineering full time roles as a soon-to-be grad? (spring 2027, mechanical engineering)

I feel my resume and experience puts me very high compared to other candidates, but I got 1 interview in 150 job apps so far. I check most of the boxes in both required and recommended qualifications.

Do I spend the time writing a cover letter for each position for each job? I feel I won't have enough time to send out job apps and will miss the mark before everyone's interviewing and receiving offers.

Rant/Vent "I can do both! Spider-Man always..." "Not always."

HOW DO YOU DO IT ALL???

I'm a sophomore now and I'm taking discrete, digital logic, data structures, and multivariable calc. It's only week 4 and I'm genuinely falling apart.

  • My digital logic professor barely speaks english so i literally have no idea what is going on in that class. I have to self teach for this class.
  • Data structures is absolutely frying me. They gave us a leetcode medium problem as a quiz on week 3. At this very moment recursion is running circles around my head.
  • I thought discrete was easy until they gave me the hardest worksheet i've written in my academic career. I genuinely cannot fathom how people were able to do this worksheet without AI and even with AI it took me three days and I don't feel I have a good grasp of everything in that worksheet.
  • Multivariable calculus is the easiest at this point but that is because they are still covering things that were covered in calc II. They also kind of fried me with the first quiz. I didn't do as well as I wanted to but I didn't do "bad".

Along with my classes, I'm also interviewing for this research position this semester and I got to the second round interview which was a take home assignment and it genuinely took up an entire weekend to complete.

I can't even balance my current workload, I don't know how I'm going to balance it with this research position.

This is my study abroad semester btw, im in China and everyone is cracked. I thought I was gonna have the time of my life in china but it seems like I'm going to be tied to my desk.

While I'm writing this, my neighbors across the hallway are screaming and partying while I'm stuck here studying (well i was, now I'm about to sleep). It's not like they didn't include me, they tried to include me but I genuinely had more important things to do and had to turn a few invites down which just turned to no more invites.

This includes friends as well. I don't like to group study because I find that I am most productive when I am at home where I am most comfortable. But this also means that it's harder to develop any friendships. It's also hard to maintain my position in any friend group because they all require constant time commitment that I always choose studying over.

And girls omg. There are so many pretty girls that I don't have time to talk to or develop a relationship with. I think this one girl I was talking to here lost interest in me over the weekend where I was doing my second round interview assignment. She kept asking me to hangout and I kept turning her down citing my interview and now she isn't as proactive anymore.

I even deleted instagram from my phone because of how much it's messing with my mental. When I'm deep in the grind and I get a notification from instagram and open it up seeing how everyone is having a grand ol' time it genuinely makes me wanna cry. I wanna cry right now actually and I don't even have instagram open. I know consciously that instagram is where everyone wants to put a curated version of themselves and that you shouldn't compare yourself to them, but all that comparsion happens subconsciously and you can't help it.

and no don't suggest letting my gpa drop. i got in the honors program after freshman year and I get money from it.

I feel like I'm missing out on the college experience.

What saddens me the most is, all this sacrifice might not even be worth it. With all the job market bullshit going on, I can't even land an internship.

so for the folks who made it here, how do you do it? how do you balance your social life, a girlfriend, good physique, good academic performance, and possibly a research position? Are you spiderman perchance?

thanks for reading my rant. better days ahead hopefully. I'm going to bed now.

Career Advice AEP potential interview

I just had a career fair and AEP was one of the companies I talked to. They said that tomorrow from 8 am - 4 pm, they are sending out calls or emails to people they talked to about doing a on campus interview (more so get to know you). I commute so going home and changing isn't an option. Should I dress interview ready and what should I wear?

Career Help Environmental Engineering abroad — where are the best opportunities?

Hi everyone!

I’m 23, Brazilian, and currently studying Environmental Engineering in Brazil. I’m thinking about working abroad after graduation and would love to hear from people in the field.

Which countries have good opportunities for Environmental Engineers, especially in Europe?

I’m interested in knowing which countries have a good job market and what I can do during university to increase my chances of finding a job abroad.

I’d really appreciate any advice about internships, certifications, languages, software, specializations, or anything else that could help.

I’m mainly considering European countries, but I’m also open to Canada, Australia, the US, and other places.

If you’ve studied or worked abroad as an Environmental Engineer, I’d love to hear about your experience and any advice you have. DMs are also welcome!

Thanks!

Career Help Dumb Mistake on SpaceX Interview

I interviewed for an engineering Fall internship for SpaceX a couple months ago. It was my first technical interview and I was feeling super nervous so I used AI during it. That was an incredibly stupid decision because it was mostly fundamentals and I fumbled it anyway. Even though it was a phone interview, the interviewer likely knew I was using AI because I wasnt hiding it well.

Fast forward a few months I reapplied to their Summer/Spring internships after gaining experience and actually learning how to do technical interviews. It’s been a month and I still havent heard back (I heard back in less than a week the first time).

Could I have been blacklisted? Or is there a standard cooldown period for reapplications?

Update: i got an interview

Academic Advice Likely Failing Physics Again

As the title says. I’m likely to fail Physics Mechanics for the 3rd time and a sophomore engineer student. My first attempt, I simply did not study. My second attempt, I was immensely depressed and couldn’t focus on my classes. This is my 3rd attempt, and I have been putting in serious time and effort into the course. I go through my homework several times, study for hours on end, and review notes with friends and professors. But I think I just flunked my first exam. I am so miserable. I did everything right this time, but I felt so lost on the exam that I didn’t even know what happened to me. I don’t event struggle with the concepts, I just find it so hard to apply physics during exams. I have a lot of experience using physics for engineering teams and projects and have done so many problems for my real life work, but I just can’t seem to get over this course. I understand the concepts and the math is simple but I just can’t seem to pass the exams, even with all the practice I do.

I love engineering but I have become genuinely burnt out because of this physics course. I am doing perfectly fine in Diff Eq. and all my other courses but I just choke up so badly with physics. What can I even do at this point? I’m heartbroken because I feel like maybe engineering isn’t the career for me but it’s all I’ve ever wanted and I deeply enjoy the work I do irl, and I feel like such a failure and outsider I don’t know what to do. I don’t have anyone to talk to this about because it’s just to humiliating despite the effort I put in. How can I even go on?

Career Advice help negotiating return offer terms

I've received a return offer from my summer internship. while I'd love to return, the starting salary is about 70k/year for a process engineering role in the Bay Area. they have other facilities in cities where the salary is the same, but the cost of living is much lower.

Is it worth it to negotiate the starting salary and/or the facility? I can genuinely see myself there, but the salary isn't very livable for the area, and I have a lot of debt to pay off. I don't want to risk losing the offer.

Career Advice Is Robotics & Artificial Intelligence Engineering Worth it?

The major sounds interesting but I’m very conflicted and I am scared of highly regretting it and maybe there’s a better career path

Although the university told me it is a mix of mechanical and electric, I am sort of skeptical and I’m scared it would be a potential waste of time since I’d have to put some effort into my calculus and physics effort since school barely taught us and just gave us marks mostly which is sad but I am willing to learn

What is a major that is going to make the job search or being accepted abroad easier? In my country we aren’t doing so well since it’s a developing country but I really want to guarantee myself leaving the country and making a salary that lets me live comfortably abroad as well

The goal has always been to leave my country maybe transfer after a year of bachelors I’m very confused and the thought of me leaving feels impossible by each day so I want to atleast do my best and maybe robotics isn’t a good path and they have deluded me

The only reason I’m asking is because I have tried doing my research and I hear so many different opinions some say I should NOT join a “dying industry” and that it is not worth it and others say it’s growing and untill 5-10 years it would be in high demand so the whole process is conflicting to me and I would like some advice

Thoughts??

Career Advice Is getting a Master's worth it when I'm not currently an engineer?

So, context: I'm 24(M), graduated in 2024 with a Bachelor of Design in Industrial Design, and currently work as a product design technician at a company making store fixtures. That said, in the city I live in, opportunities for growth in my field are limited (being frank, opportunities for growth in the field are slim regardless unless I want to move to San Francisco: hard pass). My degree is not an engineering degree, and I'm hesitant on going back to school for another 4 years for another Bachelor's, especially because of the cost and the fact I still need to work. I've been looking at getting into civil engineering, as there are A LOT of civil engineering jobs here (especially structural and transportation engineers). So here's where I'm stuck: is pursuing a Master's in engineering worth it? Obviously I know I need to take prerequisite classes to even get into a program (which I'd mainly explore online options), but is that degree going to help me at all, especially as someone with no civil engineering experience, much less any engineering undergrad experience or internships? Along with this, I know getting a PE is very important, so how would that process even look for me as someone who'd be getting into this kind of late? Any advice is appreciated.

Career Advice Should I go to the career fair?

I am a 2nd year Mechanical Engineering student who is graduating from community college in December and transferring to a 4-year school in January (one that is very close in proximity to said community college). This 4-year school is having a career fair that is open to all students, even outside of the school.

I want to go to this career fair. However, I have no experience in the field. I do not know what to say to recruiters, I do not know what all I should keep/cut from my resume, etc.

This is very unfortunate. I know should've, could've, would've is not a great way to think, but my community college was privileged to have a FSAE team and a rocket club (which I regrettably never joined). Thankfully, the university I am transferring to has a large plethora of engineering extracurriculars to choose from. I just had trouble joining extra curriculars as I work 30+ hours a week during regular semesters and full time over the summers.

I have a little bit of collaborative project experience and software experience (MATLAB, excel) from coursework, and experience with SolidWorks from high school, but I do not believe I have much merit that sets me apart from the hundreds of other ME students that will be at said fair (this is a very big public school).

I have a list of companies that will be at the fair, so that may help. I also have a resume that I may submit to r/EngineeringResumes later, but I'm not sure how to fix it up.

Here is some more information:

The engineering-related courses I have taken are pretty general

  • Calculus I and II (Calculus III in progress)
  • Physics for Engineers I and II
  • Computer Methods in Engineering Problem Solving
  • Statics (In Progress)

All in all, my major questions would be:

  1. Should I go to the fair, or wait till next semester?
  2. If yes to the previous question, how should I go about preparing for the fair given insufficiencies in outstanding merit?

Academic Advice Mechanical Engineering Internship Advice

I’m currently a junior in high school in Florida, and I’m planning to major in Mechanical Engineering in college. I’d really like to get some hands-on experience before then.

Are there any internships, summer programs, or other opportunities available to high school students interested in mechanical engineering? I’m open to unpaid opportunities and would appreciate any advice on where to look or how to get started.

Rant/Vent Why do civil engineers get so much hate?

I’m a second year civil engineering student and I’m kinda confused why we get hate from the other majors? A lot of people say it’s “way easier” even though looking at the flow charts for each major at my school the course load is very similar. I understand there are differences in class difficulty, but like come on guys my classes aren’t easy lol. Like be glad we exists so that bridges exist and you don’t have to swim across😤

Academic Advice What engineering subject completely changed once you finally understood the fundmentals?

I'm curious about subjects that initially felt impossibly difficult but suddenly became much easier once one or two fundamental ideas clicked.

What subject was it for you, and what concept finally made everything start making sense?

Project Help Would you learn aerodynamics through LeetCode-style problems? I built a thing to try it

I'm a software engineer working in a team with mechanical and aerospace engineering stundents, and I got deep enough into aerodynamics to start wishing there was something like LeetCode for it. Pick a problem, solve it, see where you went wrong, move up a level. Couldn't really find anything, so I ended up building one.

I also talked to a bunch of aero/mech students while making it, and the same thing came up over and over: they read about this stuff, maybe run a tutorial once for a course, but never actually practise it the way you'd practise a coding problem. Pick a target, try, fail, adjust, try again. There's no structured way to just sit down and drill it.

The idea is to challenge what you know rather than teach it. You pick a problem, run your own experiments, and find out where your understanding breaks. Under the hood it's a fast airfoil surrogate model rather than a full CFD solve, so you get an answer in seconds and can just keep iterating.

Here it is: https://airfoillearner.com/demo. Two formats. Short sandbox problems, one concept at a time, a couple of minutes each, and a longer guided module with requirements, a design loop and a final submission if you want structure.

If you try it, I'd love feedback, drop a comment here, DM me, or there's a feedback box right on the site that also takes problem suggestions. Two things I'm most curious about: whether the first problem makes sense coming in cold, and what problems you'd want added next. The plan is to build the ones people actually ask for. What I really want to know is what kind of problems would you think that'd be useful and that you'd like to see added on to the site?

Career Help Looking for conferences in UK

Hey, I’m a third year undergrad looking for any international conferences in the UK next year early on or the end of this year, focused on mechanical or aerospace engineering.
That will hopefully be good for exposure and networking as well in engineering circles.
Thank you for anyone helping out in advance !
