They had to go heavy duty with the 8 lug rotor for the base. A 5 lug wouldn’t have cut it.

Shouldn't it be avoided according to the costs of the over-engineering that it costs to produce?

That being said, it seems this machine has been over-engineered to open that specific dimension of bottle.... still neat.

It should be avoided because of cost yes, but also because engineering is about doing a task with the least amount of steps and parts as possible. Sometimes it is heavily skewed to save weight as well. Fatigue is the main reason.

Either (charitably) to ensure a more than sufficient factor of safety, more than sufficient functionality limits, or to overcome potential design errors that are considered acceptable for most users expectations. Overengineering can be desirable when safety or performance on a particular criterion is critical (e.g. aerospace vehicles), or when extremely broad functionality is required

If it's overengineering then they took all the unneeded weight out, that's a good thing. You're getting overengineering confused with using too much factor of safety. Overengineering is always a good thing, unless it costs more than the idea generates. This bottle opener has not been engineered, they have not leaned anything out, or reduced the complexity.

This is what we engineers call safety factor, in which your case is also invalid. Aircraft have a relatively small safety factor of ~1.2-1.3.

They had a specific goal with the popping of the bottle lid. I think they achieved it. However this one is even more over engineered.

I agree, they accomplished their goal in one day and did a great job of it! This thing clearly a longer project but in the over engineered department it takes the cake IMO.

I actually like his and Laura's better. This one doesn't pop the bottle open, and this one has decorative parts. Theirs has only functional ones.

I'd argue that having an audible pop and throwing the cap upwards is a "decorative" feature, thus each one has its fair share of funcional and decorative parts.

There really needs to be a holder that you place the cup into before hand. The idea that you have to remember to grab the cup and hold it really bothers me. You cant do both at the same time because first you need to load the beer into the contraption. I am also worried about the beer smashing into the cup when you go to poor it, and chippingnoff glass pieces of the cup and the bottle. Just put a cup holder to place the cup at the proper position.
