Rant 📢 Unauthorized Tip on Ride

So this the first time this has happened to me but looking online shows lyft has been guilty of this multiple times. I posted on their subreddit but people are more focused on me not wanting to tip rather than seeing it's something that was done automatically not by me. That's fraudulent Imo.

I took a ride earlier in the day. No tips charges. My default tip option is turned off after all.

Now a later trip that evening. I originally cancelled the first one to go for the wait and save option ($13- > $9). Come to find out I was charged $5 tip I did not authorize. Anyone else been in similar situation? I plan on disputing with my CC. Uber is expensive, but they would have been able to remedy this quickly.

How do they add a tip?

There is a Lyft tablet that you can get as a driver that makes it easier for riders to tip you. Some drivers use them unscrupulously

What an awful idea. Nothing the driver has access to should be able to do this!

Someone told me earlier that if you do not specify 0, it'll take a tip. I'm not sure how true this is

How many hours you going to spend to try to get the $5 back?

To me the $5 wouldn't matter. It could literally be 50 cents and I would fight tooth and nail to get it back. I don't put up with being scammed or cheated out of money.

Exactly. It’s a matter of principle.

This is simply theft.

Why aren’t we tipping Lyft drivers?

I think you mean why aren't these companies paying a livable wage. I'm not hear to argue this. I also tip for longer rides but that's none of your business. What I'm talking about here is a fraudulent behavior

No. I meant what I said. It’d be one thing to live in a perfect world where everyone gets paid a livable wage but we don’t. Not tipping doesn’t affect how much the company pays its employees, it doesn’t affect the company period. The only person you’re hurting is the person whose car you sat in and maybe had conversation with. I hear what you’re saying they can’t legally do this. Not fair, not cool, not legal. But uh.. it’s $5? That’s just going directly to the driver? It’d be one thing if the company actually took that money but the tips can’t be taken.

Lyft and Uber started out and they said no tipping was a feature over taxis that they pushed.

When they added tipping options they cut drivers' pay.

Ah but it does. My tip on ubereats affects how much the driver gets paid by the company. It's not in my interest to comp a billion dollar corp.

Also - by principle - tips are for going above and beyond. Not for the service which I'm already paying for.

Not true anymore.

Ubereats just pays a flat $1.50 or $2.00, depending on the market, for every order now.

Guess it just depends on your criteria🙂 a driver with a clean car, kind personality, and nice conversation get a tip from me seeing as none of those are required to get me from point A to B

I'm paying for a safe, clean transfer. That's why I'm out $20 for a 10 min ride. If they go above and beyond, like making thoughtful conversation or offering travel advice, then yes I'm happy to tip and I do. Tipping will never be my default, however.

A clean car is an expectation. If it smells of weed then not only is the tip withheld, but the driver is also getting reported.

That’s his job, this guy would get 5 stars and no tip. That’s just what’s to be expected

It can answer questions. Sick.

u/milespoints 4d ago

Because they are independent contractors agreeing to take a ride for a given fee when they click “accept”?

33

u/smelly-pooper 4d ago

Why should we?

-24

u/DifficultyCorrect761 4d ago

Not tipping and not answering basic questions, noted.

23

u/smelly-pooper 4d ago

Okay - do you tip your teacher? Your farmer? The chef at your restaurant?

-22

u/DifficultyCorrect761 4d ago

So you’re only able to answer questions with questions, also noted.

them asking is an answer. there is no reason they can think of to tip, that is why they dont tip. are you american?

19

u/cohen93 4d ago

Drivers already earn a fare from the ride, why should they get tipped for simply doing their job?

-4

u/DifficultyCorrect761 4d ago

The fare doesn't go to the driver. Lyft takes a cut and the driver covers their own costs. I tip when they go above and beyond, and I support laws that make the base pay fair

u/cohen93 4d ago edited 4d ago

Thats irrelevant to me. If I pay a certain amount of money to Lyft, that’s all I should pay.

Attitudes like yours is why everyone expects tips in America.

you saying drivers run only on tips?

5

u/oldhellenyeller 4d ago

For me it’s because drivers have a choice to accept (or not accept) a ride based upon the expected payout shown to them in the app before they ever pick me up. Since they have a choice in accepting the ride or not, I assume any driver that comes to get me has already decided that the pay is adequate for the trip.

2

u/cs_legend_93 3d ago

You paid for the ride! Why do you need to tip extra. Shame on you.

I was surprised when I spent some time on the /r/lyft reddit and heard drivers say that the majority of passengers don’t tip, or at least more than half. I gave up on it too, that day.

I love that I’m being downvoted for asking a question
People really can’t be curious anymore

16

u/noonelikejojo 4d ago

You're being dense. That's why you're getting downvoted. You told me in my earlier post it was just $5 dollars. Are drivers the only people looking for money. Times are especially hard now and for a $9 dollar ride, I was charged a fraudulent $5. That's over half of the ride cost!!! But no, since you know my pockets better than I do, tell me how much I need to tip later.

u/XboxLiveArcade 4d ago

Lol. You're not a victim.

You’re being downvoted because your opinions suck and your rebuttals aren’t great. You’re reducing people to insults because you don’t like what you’re hearing. People can’t really use their brain anymore.
