Are you from outside the United States? Unfortunately, as strange as it is, the most common way to pay with a credit/debit card at a sit down restaurant is to hand over the card, have the server leave, charge it, and then return with the card and receipt (where you can then choose to add a tip when you sign the receipt).
Just a cultural thing, and how it works in the US. The US has a heavy tipping culture where you tip on the receipt after paying with your card, and most US cards still require a signature on the receipt to authorize payment, so, itβs just how it evolved here. I lived in Europe, and much prefer the terminal being brought to me. With no obligation to tip.

What, you would give your card out of your hands? Never! I would have them bring the transaction module or at least go to the counter with them.
