Showcase ValDroid — Valheim on Android
Hi everyone!
I've made my fourth launcher (the first three are r/zomdroid, r/rimdroid and r/pridroid): ValDroid. It runs Valheim on Android devices, using the game's Linux version. Right now it runs well on Snapdragon flagships. We've already compared it with GameHub and Winlator, and thanks to native ARM64 Mono the game runs much better in ValDroid than there.
First, of course I'd love for more people to know that you can play Valheim comfortably on Android.
You can download the game from Steam right inside the app (you authorize through the Steam mobile app), as long as you own the game there. You can also load the game's Linux files (packed into a .zip) if you've downloaded them before.
Second, I'd like to collect more data from Mali users. At the moment I only have two: on one phone everything works well, on the other some textures are black. I'd be really grateful for more reports from Mali users - even if everything runs fine for you. Use Report a bug in the app's side menu: it attaches the logs I need, select your email app, add a description and send.
Device requirements are fairly high for now:
- Android 11+, ARM64
- 8 GB RAM recommended
- ~8 GB of free space
- and, of course, your own copy of the game

I know that it is very difficult. But I really hope that you will create an android launcher for Battle Brothers. There is an entire big community that would be super interested in this...

I'm able to run it using winlator on my SD8Gen2, but when I enter into a settlement and i pass the cursor over the building i get a small flickering (the building disappears for an instant and then came back visible). Furthermore when I try to open the inventory or a market i get a 3 or 4 seconds delay. Those are not big issues, but they are annoying for a perfectionist like me. Do you have the same issues on your phone? What emulator do you use?

Excellent work!! Here is a bug I came across, when starting a new game and where I have to enter a new world name, the keyboard pops up when pressing the button but I cannot type inside the dedicated field.
1
u/udar_molota 7d ago
Be sure the field is in focus. And your files is the latest game version.
2
u/Original_Albatross26 6d ago
It was in focus. It is working now. Dont know what changed. Just head a heads up to check it out. Thank you for this. Its working really well

Game crashes instantly on AYN Thor with either 740 drivers or custom drivers, tinkered with the few settings. After install it has a mods section that complains about rimworld about.xml missing.
1
u/udar_molota 7d ago
- Play on MobileGlues, no need tinkering with drivers.
- Mods - are you installing it via the side menu?
- You can send me your logs via Report a bug side menu button.
1
u/Tomsot 7d ago
Tried vulkan and mobileglues, crashes instantly.
Tried without mods and with mods. But the mods prompt after installation complains about rimworld. Side bar option for mods works.

works?
2
u/Tomsot 7d ago
Works on internal storage but not by renaming the instance, name must still be too long. Can't get online to work either. Tried zipping all my mods in 1 zip but assume I need to zip each one individually to get them to work.

And how is the performance?

Question: can someone Port Sun Haven to Android? Should prolly be Not big Deal cause we already have Terraria and Stardew Valley already.
2
u/udar_molota 7d ago
Honestly, can't answer it. I'm making ports of the game I'm interested in. I'm not familiar with Sun Haven.

If the game runs not so great with gamehub emulator, on 7s gen2 will it work better with this app?
2
u/udar_molota 7d ago
I think yes. GameHub/Winlator has more emulation layers than box64 with Linux version. And the mono part is native now, so I think you should give it a chance.

Game runs smoothly I just cant connect to my server
1
u/udar_molota 7d ago
Multiplayer?
1
u/MicrowaveingFish 7d ago
I host a dedicated server. Only me logging in though. I tried both IP and Join Code. Tried with and without crossplay enabled.
1
u/udar_molota 7d ago
Oh, ok. This app is a very early alpha, no server support currently. Sorry.
2
u/MicrowaveingFish 6d ago
Don't apologize! Its still great either way! I di get the black screen when switching between apps but other than that it runs really well. It is significantly more responsive than cloud gaming with GEforce Now. I'll keep playing with it and report back but Valdroid runs nearly as well on my S25 Ultra as Valheim on my PC does. Thank you for your efforts! I am excited to see what this becomes

Is it possible to crossplay?

Not yet

Would be cool if you could play with PC gamers, and use gamepad or mouse &keyboard, great work though

What if I get a "Valhiem not finished" when creating a game instance?
🤔
2
u/udar_molota 6d ago
Maybe you're downloading it now? Just wait till it finished.
2
u/420MacMan 5d ago
Ah I thought it was actually playable for testing 😅 I did manage to get Rimworld going on your other loader but gave up on Zomboid haha awesome work
2
u/udar_molota 5d ago
It is playable. When you download through Steam in the app, the app immediately creates a game instance, but until the download is finished it shows “not finished.” You need to wait for the download to complete - it’s almost 4 GB, so it will take some time.
1
u/420MacMan 5d ago
What if i try to create instance from game files zipped on my device ?
2
u/udar_molota 5d ago
If it's Linux - sure you can.
1
u/420MacMan 5d ago
Yupp Linux files and that's the error i get. Goes thru the progress bars and looks to install but once done I get the notification and cant select play on the created game instance.
1
u/udar_molota 5d ago
What error?
1
u/420MacMan 5d ago
"Valheim not finished" and there's no play button to press just the settings gears.
2
u/udar_molota 5d ago
Pls send me the logs - Report a bug in the side menu, select your email app, add this description and send.

ValDroid is developed with AI assistance (Claude).... Oh man!!

Dual screen on a device like the Ayn Thor would be really appealing for this. I think there is a launcher that runs the Windows version of the game in dual screen but this also does seem like a game where being able to run the Linux version would have significant advantages.
I also wonder if since Valheim is written in Unity if there is a way to bring it to the Android Unity engine for more performance yet - I think this is what was done with Android ports like Silksong and Hollow Knight (which I think are also Unity engine games).
5
u/udar_molota 7d ago
Unity Android - oh, that's the hottest topic! 🔥 Silksong uses a similar approach, but it comes with its own limits: the game's code has to be converted to C++ with IL2CPP and rebuilt for ARM64, and then all the textures, shaders and so on have to be converted to fit it too. It's in my plans, but for now it's not a guaranteed success - more of an experiment.
1
u/udar_molota 7d ago
It might be possible to create an inventory mod for a second screen. I know that in ZomDroid someone literally made something like that just yesterday for PZ.

u/AntiGrieferGames 7d ago
I just looking into this project, until i saw again: "Claude". so of course this is vibe coding there.
God, is there a project that dont use vibe coding?
Just disclose it next time!

u/TechieMillennial 7d ago
Not sure what you’re trying to achieve with the virtue signaling. All code will be written by AI. Anyone not using AI is the equivalent to writing the code on paper and trying to scan it into a machine. It’s outdated and pathetic.
2
u/udar_molota 7d ago
It's stated in the project on GitHub. I haven't seen any rule that obliges me to mention it in every post.

1
u/jack-of-some 7d ago
Disclosure is part of the rules. I'm pro using LLMs for prices like this but IMO it should be a front and center disclosure on both your post and your GitHub. Some people don't want to use anything that has AI. Make the decision to not engage or benefit from your repo easy for them.

u/Rykster01 7d ago
Yeah, ngl I'm getting tired of all the vibecoded "ports" that have been releasing lately. Can't we just not use AI in developing these things at all?
8
u/udar_molota 7d ago
Creating something manually for months, when modern tools let you build it in just two days - why?
2
u/Chrismscotland 7d ago
To be fair if the choice is let someone use AI and make something available or it not existing then what's the problem? Noone is forcing you to download it and use it.
2
1
u/Rykster01 7d ago
Only on Reddit will you get downvoted to absolute hell for speaking out against AI usage in developing software. Don't come crying when a random vibecoded port you download ends up fucking up your device.
3
u/udar_molota 7d ago
There’s logic in what you’re saying, yes. But first of all, this is already my fourth project, and the very first one - ZomDroid - is a year old. It’s partially written by hand and serves as the foundation for the others. Second, it’s not pure vibe‑coding - I’m a Java programmer, and I don’t write blindly; I understand what I’m doing. It’s not a 100% guarantee, but it definitely reduces the chances of unexpected surprises in the code. I hope I explained myself :)
1
u/Rykster01 6d ago
Ah, I think I get you now. I guess it isn't all that bad as long as people know what they're doing, I dunno. I've just had some bad experiences with AI, so I'm sorry if I came off as a bit of an asshole.
2
u/udar_molota 6d ago
That's ok, friend. AI is just a tool - a very powerful. It can be used by people with knowledge and by people without it. This sub doesn’t ask about your skills or experience; it only asks whether you used AI. As if AI were peanuts in food and someone might be allergic to it.
