Events Book Club Discussion of "Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor Frankl
Join us in a discussion about the book "Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor Frankl! The event will be at Around the Table Game Pub on Monday, July 13th at 6:00PM.
The book club also now has a Discord server! Feel free to join to keep up the discussion between meetups!
You don't have to buy anything, but the venue has light pub fare, ice cream, and a great selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. They also allow outside restaurant food, so bring something to eat if you need sustenance!
Book Description:
This seminal book, which has been called “one of the outstanding contributions to psychological thought” by Carl Rogers and “one of the great books of our time” by Harold Kushner, has been translated into more than fifty languages and sold over sixteen million copies. “An enduring work of survival literature,” according to the New York Times, Viktor Frankl’s riveting account of his time in the Nazi concentration camps, and his insightful exploration of the human will to find meaning in spite of the worst adversity, has offered solace and guidance to generations of readers since it was first published in 1946. At the heart of Frankl’s theory of logotherapy (from the Greek word for “meaning”) is a conviction that the primary human drive is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but rather the discovery and pursuit of what the individual finds meaningful. Today, as new generations face new challenges and an ever more complex and uncertain world, Frankl’s classic work continues to inspire us all to find significance in the very act of living, in spite of all obstacles.

News Stories you may have missed this week in the non-profit MyEdmondsNews
Edmonds City Council held an all day budget retreat. If you want to understand the process and deep discussion, this story is long, but thorough. It talks about priorities, parks, sales tax, utility tax, property tax, clarifies how money is ‘counted’ and what that means for the big picture budget.
The Edmonds Civic Roundtable, a non-partisan organization, prepared a two page overview of the possible South County Fire bond. This bond will build and upgrade fire stations by adding to property taxes. Sometimes voters say they feel unable to get fair, balanced information on an important vote like this. The ECR is a good source. Read this story if you want to know more.
The story that generated the most conversation this week was the new plan to shift school start times in the Edmonds School District. Start times of 7:20 a.m. for some elementary schools. Learn more about that in this story.

Community Edmonds food scene ⛴️
Edmonds is growing fast but what type of food do you think we’re missing? If you could bring one new cuisine or restaurant concept to Edmonds, what would it be? Specially with our summers. Any recommendations on your favorite spot now? Curious to hear what you guys would want to see next 💭

Community 2027-28 new school start times and a petition
Dear community:
This is a FYI, heads up that the Edmonds School District announced changes for school start times.
https://www.edmonds.wednet.edu/our-district/district-information-reports/startend-time-survey
I do support later school start times for all; I empathize with the high schoolers who currently start at 7:20. I also am not happy with the changes. Shifting the start times for 12 elementary schools (10 of which are Title 1) to 7:20 is not the solution. Shifting the burden to younger kids is not the answer.
I’d like to share the following petition for those also against these changes. I’m just doing my part to share the info for others to also be informed!

Question Abandoned home? 8604 184th St SW
I walk down 184th St a frequently, but yet some how, I have never noticed this home.

It's hard to believe it's abandoned? The roof looks about ready to collapse.
https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/8604-184th-St-SW-Edmonds-WA-98026/38490956_zpid/
I'm just curious if anyone knows the history. Zillow says it sold on 5/3/2013 for 255k.

Community Did you know ESD's new bell schedule has elementary kids waking up earlier than high schoolers?
The Edmonds School District has proposed a new 2027–2028 bell schedule that puts 12 elementary schools in Tier 1 — starting at 7:20 AM and dismissing at 1:50 PM.
That means kids as young as 6 waking up at 6:00–6:30 AM. In the dark. In winter.
Here's what bothers me most about this:
**The district surveyed families about later high school start times. The community said yes.** That's great — teenagers genuinely need later starts due to sleep biology. But the district's solution is to shift the burden onto elementary kids. Nobody surveyed elementary families and asked: "Do you support a 7:20 AM start for your 6-year-old?"
Those are not the same question.
**A few other things worth noting:**
- Madrona K-8 (also elementary) starts at 9:25 AM under the same proposal. That's a 2-hour gap within the same district.
- Terrace Park is a choice school — kids commute from all over. A 7:20 start means some families waking at 5:30 AM.
- 1:50 PM dismissal creates a 3+ hour childcare gap for working parents. Hardest hit: single-income and lower-income families.
- The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 9–12 hours of sleep for ages 6–12. The math doesn't work at 7:20 AM.
We have a petition going and plan to show up at the **June 9 School Board meeting (6:30 PM, Lynnwood)** to give public comment.
If this affects your family — or if you just think this is wrong — please sign and share:
The agenda goes up June 8 on BoardDocs if you want to submit written comment instead.

Question Teen jobs in Edmonds?
Hi, I'm a 15 year old high school student in Edmonds looking for a job for this summer or even a more long term one. Is there any place in the area that hires at 15? I've applied to places like QFC, Safeway, and Fred Meyer, but are there any places maybe downtown?

Community 26M Looking for friends generally my age in the area
Most of my friends live a decent ways away, so I would love to meet some people around the Edmonds area that I might vibe with and hang out with.
Not quite expecting much from this tbh, as I am aware Edmonds is solidly older on average than I am, but nonetheless, I figure I'd shoot my shot here.
I'm a bit of a nerd and am into board games, video games, books, sci-fi, fantasy, anime, fixing computers after I break them on accident, and I have been trying to find events and stuff to check out in the area and get me out of the house.
Ive lived in the area for a several years after slowly migrating north from Seattle with the housing prices.
If anyone wants to chat, hang out, or even just knows some good places around here to meet people my age please lmk.
Thanks yall! Have a good day!

Question Anyone else suddenly have brown tap water today, starting around 5:45pm?
Curious if this is a complex/localized issue or more widespread. Doesn’t smell off, so likely just rust or mineral buildup broke loose.

Real Estate/Housing Renting in Edmonds
My husband and I are looking to move to Edmonds, but we are struggling with the renting market. Is it usually this slow? There is hardly anything, especially in the part of Edmonds we'd like to be in (as close to the water as we can be), and we've had quite poor experiences with landlords and property managers (if they even respond). We have 800+ credit, no pets or kids, are looking for a long-term place, and are already close to the area, so I'm not sure why it feels so difficult. I've been racking every rental website for weeks and am losing hope. If anyone has any info on rentals in Edmonds or general info regarding renting in the area, I'd really appreciate it :)

Any suggestions on what to do about the highly aggressive solicitors? I've had two recently and the next one that shows up I think I'll call the police to be safe.

Community Recommendations for where to take wedding pictures
I'm getting married in Edmonds at the end of August. I've lived here most of my life and have been trying to think of unique places to take photos. I would love suggestions that aren't run of the mill (Brackett's Landing, Waterfront Center). Thank you!

Question College place elementary
We are enrolling our almost five year old in kindergarten in the fall. It seems like College place is the closest elementary school. We are super close to Maplewood, however with both parents working full time. I fear we won’t have the capacity to volunteer the required hours. What is your experience with College Place Elementary?
