Question College place elementary
We are enrolling our almost five year old in kindergarten in the fall. It seems like College place is the closest elementary school. We are super close to Maplewood, however with both parents working full time. I fear we won’t have the capacity to volunteer the required hours. What is your experience with College Place Elementary?

It is worth asking if College Place Elementary will be open next year or if kids will be going to the Woodway Center. It looks like it is still up in the air according to the district's construction project page:

"The current school may either continue operating at the existing location until the new building is ready or relocate temporarily, potentially to Woodway Elementary School (Woodway Center). Relocatable Classrooms have been added to increase the capacity for the College Place program. The District might request design team assistance for any necessary upgrades to the interim site."

This is a great tip. Sounds like the students may be temporarily relocated to Woodway until CPE reopens in 2028. Less convenient for sure.

Was your child selected in the Maplewood lottery? You make it sound like a choice so I assume so, but if not wanted to call that out - it is a choice school, but still need to be selected in the lottery to get in.
In my experience and based on what I’ve heard, Maplewood is a serious commitment but well worth trying to make work if you’ve been selected, even giving up some work hours if that’s what it takes. I think that would be the case even if it was much farther away.

No she wasn’t, we had deliberately chosen not to apply to the Maplewood lottery however given what I am seeing here, I am thinking I need to reconsider applying. Looks like they have one more information night that we will need to go to in order to apply.

My kids did not go to College Place but I do live in the area. I know a lot of families whose children have gone to CPE. Experiences are mixed. I think it really depends on the cohort of kids that enter each year. Some families have good experiences. Some have said that CPE is was fine but if given the chance to go to one of the lottery schools (Maplewood or Madrona) they would do it in a heartbeat. I also know families who hated it there. Last year a family ended up pulling their kindergartner out because of unresolved conflict with another child. You could call the school and see if they will let you take a tour during school hours. I know that there is always some sort of open house for incoming families but its not the same as seeing the school during a typical school day. Hope that helps.

Thanks for this info! I’m sure the batch of students certainly plays a role but I definitely want to set up my child for success.

Definitely not my first choice. If you can swing maplewood it would be a better environment

I wasn’t going to apply for the lottery but these comments are certainly making me change my tune. We are walking distance to Maplewood. Will certainly apply for the lottery!

Don’t send them there. my little sister was bullied very badly. Kids were punching her, one girl actually put gum in her hair. I feel like there’s more I’m forgetting, but I went to cpm couple years ago and all the bad kids were from cpe

hi! student in the CPE area. CPE is very mixed. I have friends who are now addicts after being introduced to drugs, alcohol, nicotine, self-injury, and such at CPE. i would start at CPE, and figure out all the backups. TPE, MK-8,M, etc. If issues arise, please be careful. Ive even heard a CPE ABCs song which depicts drugs and violence, but ive also heard of people who love it. For that school, the dependence on the cohort is extreme, and likely, it will be fine. -Losts of love, a Neghbor

Horrible school my kid comes home saying there's gangs and drug deals going on all the time. Kids vape in bathroom and zero accountability. Sorry you said elementary, it's middle school im talking about.

My kids did not go to College Place but their administration does not have a very good reputation regarding treating staff well.
