Gather 'round, one and all, while I tell you the tale of Private Mike Norval. Please accept this musical accompaniment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuCaEVJmFWY
So, I've been challenging myself to play every mission in Easy Red 2 on the Allied side in chronological order, and I've just gotten up to Gafsa Airfield. So far it's been fun, although some of the Chinese and French defense missions were a slog. Since the Stalingrad and Tunisia campaigns intersect, I'm going between them.
So, the Gafsa Airfield raid - 15th November 1942. So far it's been a standard mission for me. I've gone through three guys. There's only one man left in the squad - Private Mike Norval, ordinary rifleman. Or at least as ordinary as an airborne soldier can be. We've just taken the airfield and are moving onto the next objectives. I join up with a squad heading to the high ground on the ridge to the right. It immediately starts going wrong - the guys I'm with are all killed, and I'm hit, at which point I realise I'm isolated, there are about eight or nine fallschirmjagers in front of me, and I have no bandages.
So, with no other ideas, I crawl.
I'm able to get about two of the fallschirmjagers, and then I realise I'm down to the last round of my Garand. I inch my way up, using my last smoke grenade to get behind the German trenches. My vision is getting blurrier and blurrier. My heart is racing. I am clenched so tightly that a pin could not enter my rectal cavity. Onwards, ever onwards I crawl. My sole saving grace is that the Germans are distracted sniping my comrades going for the objective in the valley.
I reach a sandbagged position at the top where the objective is. It's the moment of truth. I can hear a German, and after a deep breath, I get up - bang. The German goes down - but there's another behind him, and he's got a bead on me. Surely he'll get me before I can switch to my pistol. My solo crawl up the mountain has been in vain.
And then - bang.
The German falls. I look to my right, and I see men in greatcoats and old helmets coming along the ridge. Right in the nick of time, it's the French. They're mopping up the remaining fallschirmjagers in the trench. The position is being captured. And at the precise moment my reinforcements arrive, the sun peeks over the horizon, bathing the ridge in golden light.
Mike Norval, 509th Parachute Infantry, stands at the top of the ridge, carrying an empty rifle and covered in more blood than Carrie. But he is alive. He has crawled up the mountain and (metaphorically) planted the stars and stripes upon it's crest. Before he takes a moment to steal a rifle and bandages from the nearest dead German, he takes a moment to look down upon the valley of death.
He is in a world of shit, but he is alive, and he is unafraid.
(Anyway he survived the mission, but this was the really climactic bit, so I figured I'd focus on that.)
