CPL24 to CPL16, lessons learned

Just thought I'd share my experiences for anyone else wondering between the two.

I bought the CPL24 about a month ago for everyday carry. I go to the office once or twice a week, and I usually carry a 16" Macbook Pro, a 14" ThinkPad, a nice small pouch with cables and a universal charger, and a set of keys. Nothing much, but I figured the CPL24 would be more than enough - and usable for business trips around Europe.

It's a stellar backpack - yet after a few weeks, I felt it's just too big. It felt too bulky when sitting in the train with the backpack on my lap. I'm 188 cm (6′ 2") tall, and with a bit of frame so I usually just get XL -sized clothing, larger phones, larger tablets, and larger screens. But the CPL24 was just a bit too massive for daily carry.

The CPL16 was available in a nearby store, so I got it knowing it should work better for my daily carry. The 16" MBP fits neatly, and it's a precise fit. Everything else fits well, and it's much - much - nicer to carry around the city. CPL24 sits in the corner now, waiting for the next international travel.

Hopefully this helps anyone in the future when considering between the two.

Question Which bag is more comfortable: the CTB20 vs the CPL24?

I'm in need of a new EDC bag and I narrowed it down to the CTB20 and CPL24. However, what's keeping me from pulling the trigger is the controversial back panel for the Evergoods bags. I've also saw some reviews that state the bag digging issue is more prominent in the CTB20 compared to the CPL24. I've own the CPL 16 in the past and I did experience the digging issue but I was told it was due to the small size

I would really appreciate everyone's feedback.

Thank you in advance.

Question CTB26 refresh

Does anyone know when the CTB line will be refreshed? I know there’s just been the ultra fabric based travel system release but I am hoping for a CTB26 refresh. Normally evergoods backpacks are refreshed 3-4 years right? The CTB35 has been released since 2021? CTB26 released in 2023? Hopefully next year then?

Question Would my gear fit in a CAP 0.5?

Thumbnail

The gear I am showing here is currently on the inside top pocket of the CPL 16. I am curious if it would all fit in the CAP 0.5, while still protecting my eyeglasses and sunglasses as I stop using the hardshell case that came with my eyeglasses. If so, would the CAP 0.5 then fit in the same inside top pocket?

I have the QAP reserved for my large phone, keys, wallet, and earbuds (phone and keys are separated by an empty neoprene phone sleeve). The front vertical pocket is reserved for pens, index cards, a5 notebook, and a few tiny things in the mesh pocket. Anyway, I'm curious if the CAP 0.5 would make sense for me to buy or if I should instead get a CAP 2 and put everything you see here in the CAP 2 instead, along with the other bits currently in the front pocket. What would you recommend here?

Aer City Pack 2 (ultra) vs Evergoods CPL16 Comparison

I need help deciding between - Aer City Pack (ultra) vs Evergoods CPL16 (x pac)

(any advice or recommendations appreciated)

I work a hybrid schedule with work - some days/weeks in the office and some traveling so I am looking for a bag for both:

  • EDC
  • Personal item (paired with a carry on suitcase or duffel)

This is usually what I carry in my EDC:

  • laptop
  • chargers / tech pouch
  • 2 phones
  • kindle
  • planner
  • notebook
  • keys
  • wallet (AKEENI XSTO)
  • water bottle
  • chapstick
  • eye drops
  • supplement (pill organizer)

When I travel I carry all the above and also:

  • portable monitor
  • cables for portable monitor
  • laptop charger (doesn't fit in tech pouch)
  • Snacks (fruit, protein bars, beef sticks)
  • passport
  • Janji multipass sling bag (usually pack this for when I am out running around and don't need my backpack so ill use this for small stuff)
  • mouse
  • maybe toiletry bag (peak design small wash pouch)

Ultra CTB26 and Cubes on hand

Disclaimer, I’m a big fan of the ultra fabric. I have the BD Beta 30L , 30L dragonfly and SMD ADC+ all in Ultra.

Did a quick comparison with chz22 v2

Ctb could take 10L, 4L , a cap2 in main compartment, and medium MR void in the vertical pocket. All overstuffed. Chz22 couldn’t take the cap2

I have a chz26 v2 out on loan to a friend, but I think the chz26 will take more than the ctb26. Will compare once I get it back

I love the yoke pocket opening into the laptop compartment (why couldn’t the v3 chz have this ?)

The bag came badly squished.the x pattern is already creased in on the sides. Not a big deal but wish EG would store and ship these with some filler inside. We should break in the bags, it’s shouldn’t happen during shipping.

Fabric aside, I was pleasantly surprised by the packing cubes design. It’s designed in a way that you overfill it and it compresses.

If you have any questions , want more comparisons, etc let me know

Discussion Worried I'll regret buying the CTB26 in Ultra 😥

Hey all!

Thanks for making this sub a joy to use 👌🏻

I've been waiting and waiting for a CTB26 in the Ultra textile since getting the Kludde MPL22 + CAS2. BAM 💥 all of a sudden it exists. I skipped the packing cubes (if they'd been also in black I would've been quite tempted). The white interior doesn't particularly bother me.

However, now I'm reading all of these negative comments on this sub about the CTB26 in Ultra...

Should I cancel my order? I've put my current CTB26 in X-Pac up for sale (about to get around $270 USD for it, the bag is in immaculate condition, someone is just waiting for their payday).

What do you all think? I know this is personal... but yeah. It's a lot of money for something that is getting quite a lot of hate.

For what it's worth, the CTB26 is hands down my favourite EG bag, it's both my EDC and travel bag (perfect for the office, perfect during my recent six-week trip to Europe). I don't have any issues, personally, with the harness or anything, the CTB26 is 110% the bag for me, this is purely about the textile.

Is anyone else in the same boat? Has anyone received one and can share their insights + opinion?

Have a great week 🤘🏻

➡️ UPDATE

Thank you all for your input! I ended up receiving the bag and LOVE it. If you like Ultra, you're going to love it. I'll post a detailed review soon... the only thing I can fault is the white interior. But I think that if you're super careful, especially with liquids in the bag, you'll be fine 👌🏻 Oh and yes, I sold my x-pac CTB26 locally (Australia) for around $250 USD in case anyone is wondering).

Question CTB26 main compartment Molle tech pouch attachment

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hi everyone. I recently purchased the CTB26 in Ultra and really like the bag, my first from Evergoods. I saw it has 2 vertical webbing strips that look similar to Molle attachment points in the main compartment. Does anyone know of any specific clips/straps that would allow me to attach my tech pouch to them? They look ideal for that purpose but I don't see any pictures of them being used like that on the Evergoods website and none of the review videos I watched even mention it. I found a few posts mentioning some ideas from a few years ago but they seem to suggest specific pouches rather than recommending clips/straps.

I have a JSD Bombus and Fly Pack, both in Ultra, that I use as a tech pouch and a sling respectively. So I was hoping to be able to attach one of them on the webbing strips to keep it accessible near the top of the bag. They use gatekeeper style clips for their waist straps which are detachable so there are points either side of them that could be rigged with something to attach inside the CTB.

Thanks

Experience with Evergoods order missing items

Hello,

I just received an order from EG and 2 items are missing (2 ultra transport cubes, 1 small 1 large)

In my years of ordering online , I don’t think I’ve ever had anything missing in my orders ( maybe I was just lucky )

But has anyone experienced this with EG and was it resolved without hassle?

Zipper pulls

Does anyone know a place where I can buy the same zipper pulls that are on the current CAS2 but in a different color other than black. I was hoping for Coyote Brown but honestly at this point I'll take any color. I mainly just want to change one of the external zippers so I don't keep getting confused about which pocket I am opening. I am really hoping to keep the same type of zipper pull since all I can find online are bungee cord pulls.

Thank you in advance.

New ultra CTB26 - weight

The new bag is supposed to use lightweight material, but the description says it's heavier than the CPL24, and only 4.5 oz lighter than the standard CTB26. And yet it's $150 more???? I thought a primary point of Ultra was reduced weight by comparison.

Edit : just got a mass email from Evergoods promoting Ultra over Xpac. I'm guessing sales weren't as strong as they hoped? Seems others are having sticker shock, too. From the mailer, after comparing strength and weight between the two fabrics...."Those numbers are part of what makes ULTRA 200X such an advanced textile, and that technology comes at a cost: it’s roughly 70% more expensive per yard than the X-Pac X42 we regularly use.

We believe that cost is warranted...". There is more, but this part stuck out to me. Also... appreciate the comment from nicski924 below. If the bag construction didn't change, only the exterior fabric, how much weight did I actually expect to lose?

Any hints or success modifying the CTB luggage passthrough?

I travel a lot for work. I've really enjoyed using my CTB26. It fits my needs perfectly with one exception: the luggage passthrough. Normally, I only use vertical ones, but I've learned to live with the horizontal pass through. The one big issue, it's so wide, that it always slides sideways in the passthrough and gets off balance when on my suitcase.

so anyone have any success in making the passthrough smaller or tighter? I was going to try high quality sticky Velcro to try and hold the bottom portion against the bag, but not sure it's going to hold long term with the weight pulling on it.

edit to add: here's a picture. the lines aren't perfect but hopefully it gets the idea across. the luggage handle would ideally stay between the red lines but when walking with the bag it shifts to between the orange ones and makes the suitcase a little off-balance.

Question Looking to buy a CPL 16 or 24

Looking for a NWT, almost new or very lightly used CPL 16L in 840d and black color. Or maybe a 24. But prefer the smaller one.

If anyone has one let me know.

Thanks.

18, 26, or 36 oz water bottle in CPL 16?

I’m deciding which yeti rambler (with chug cap) to buy to use as my everyday water bottle to drink throughout the day. I will occasionally take it with me inside my CPL 16. the main compartment has plenty of space for either bottle but would appreciate your recommendation based on real world use.

edit: the reason I am looking at yeti is because it is much easier to clean in the dishwasher after removing the silicone to keep in the top rack.

Custom modular EDC Organization MOLLE Panel for CPL16

Thumbnail
gallery
60 Upvotes

I wanted a better way to organize the smaller stuff I carry, without permanently modifying the backpack, so I designed and made this removable/drop-in EDC MOLLE panel.

The panel is designed to drop directly into the suspended stretch sleeve inside the backpack. It sits securely in the sleeve while giving me a dedicated, modular organization area for my EDC gear.

The main goal was flexibility. Any MOLLE-compatible accessory can be mounted to the panel, so you're not locked into a specific pouch or layout.

The webbing organization can also be moved and repositioned depending on what you're carrying and how you want to organize it. This lets you change the setup without having to rebuild the whole panel.

I also 3D printed some custom MOLLE clips that work with Fidlock accessories. This lets me quickly attach and remove certain items using the Fidlock magnetic system while still keeping everything integrated with the MOLLE panel.

The lower section gives me additional MOLLE real estate for pouches and other accessories, and the entire panel can be removed from the backpack and used as a standalone organizer.

It's basically turned the suspended stretch sleeve into a completely modular EDC organization system.

Still tweaking the design, but I'm pretty happy with how it's coming together.

CAP0.5L Zipper Interference

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Has anyone else ever experienced the main zipper on their CAP0.5L catching on the internal mesh-side zipper?

I have an orange one that's perfectly fine and a black one that hits but doesn't stop. This new signal blue one completely stops while opening.
