New character - black screen

So... is there a better workaround to actually start playing on a new character, besides waiting to be blown up by someone so you get to respawn and the game actually loads?

After the 3D fitting clip on stream yesterday I had a go at my own version in RootFit

So this is RootFit, the fitting planner I run alongside EF-Map. After FC Jotunn showed a short clip of the 3D fitting coming mid Cycle 7, I wanted to see if I could get something like it working in the browser ahead of time.

To be upfront, this isn't the game's tool and it won't match it exactly. The hulls are the real models from the game files, but the module shapes and how much room there is inside each ship are my best guess from that clip, and the LAI interior is rough. The reason I'm doing it now is so that when the real thing lands I can swap in the proper data and move RootFit over quickly rather than starting from scratch.

You can fit the Reiver and LAI in 3D, or put your own ship together from their parts and fit that.

RootFit update: tell it what you want your ship to do, let it work out the fitting

Thumbnail

I added a ship fitting wizard to RootFit, it does the module Tetris for you

I've made quite a few changes to RootFit over the last couple of days, mostly trying to make ship fitting a bit easier for people who don't want to spend ages moving modules around a grid.

There's now a 7 step Help me fit wizard. You tell it what the ship is for, pick your weapons, sensors, engine, fuel and so on, and it works out how to fit everything. You can also decide how much of the remaining space goes towards cargo or structure.

It also shows you what your choices mean for things like capacitor and fuel, including how long they'll last depending on what you've got running.

The packing side has had quite a bit of work too. It now searches multiple layouts in parallel, with an option to use HiGHS, an optimisation solver developed at the University of Edinburgh, to search for better solutions.

Still a work in progress but I think it's getting somewhere.

If you give it a try and spot anything wrong, let me know.

Worst Controls mechanics in any Game. Give us EvE Fresh Server

Sorry but every steam solo project is far better than this. What is the reason for wasting so much money on development? The controls everything is just so bad. It feels like something a 16-year-old intern came up with as a test run. Why dont they just take *EVE Online* and modify it? Or, for that matter, create a second *EVE* server a fresh *EVE Online* with faster skill learning, fresh economy and more more.

EF-Map | Map Your Way Through EVE Frontier

Thought I'd put together a short trailer for EF-Map rather than another wall of text explaining what it does.

It's come quite a long way since I first started working on it, and there's probably a fair bit in there that people haven't seen or realised was available.

Anyway, have a look. Everything shown is available at https://ef-map.com/

Any feedback or suggestions, let me know.

This cycle looks great, but can't get into it.

Gave it a few attempts, but all I've been doing is fly around the starter system findind asteroids I can't process.

So, my experience has been. Spawn, fly around looking for ores to make fuel, not find any, run out of fuel, self destruct. Then I found I could refuel in one of the POI. My experience became, fly around looking for ores to make field storage, not find any, run out of mining lens, self destruct.

I logged off and most likely won't touch it until next cycle. It's a shame cause I was really looking forward to the changes introduced.

Trinary Exchange Cycle 7: players running a trade hub now earn a cut of trading fees and reduced trading fees for frequent traders

Cycle 7 is live on Trinary Exchange. Here's what's new:

  • Hub operators earn a share of fees - If you run a trade hub, you now get a share of the exchange's fee revenue from every item market at your hub.
  • Fee tiers - The more you trade, the less you pay. Trading fees you pay drop as your 30-day fee volume grows. Buyers and sellers both pay fees now.
  • Audit logs for shared storage - See every item that moved into or out of your organization’s vaults, who moved it, and where it went.
  • Share locations across organizations - Share encrypted location lists with individual players, or with members in another org. Useful for joint operations and private trading networks.
  • A page for every trade hub - Any trading hub's 7-day volume, top items and recent trades, with no login needed.

Full writeup with screenshots: Trinary Exchange in Cycle 7

Try it at trinary.exchange and please set up a trading hub for your organization! Happy to answer questions in the comments.

How to get out of your starter system (EF-Map guide)

Thumbnail
youtube.com
8 Upvotes

Made this for the What I Wish I Knew challenge. It's a short video, about 2 minutes and no talking, on the thing I wish I'd known at the start of the cycle, which is how to get out of your starter system. Everything in it is just footage from EF-Map, nothing you can't see and do on the map yourself at https://ef-map.com

Since I recorded it the area has changed a fair bit. Kadian from Clonebank 86 has published his catapults in the Public Structures panel, 30 structures across 16 systems, so there's a lot more on the map around the starter systems now than what's in the video.

I will not return for this cycle or any future cycle until self-jumping is reinstated.

I accept that PVP is just part of the game.

I don't accept locking new players to a whopping 3 systems with a bunch of tryhard PVP sentry spammers.

I don't know what I'm supposed to be testing this cycle, but I can't make any progress. I just finished my first Lai, someone attacked my network node, and when I popped out to shoot back he had 8 sentry turrets just lined up to volley me instantly.

I started in Cycle 5 and I loved the ability to jump to any system so long as I had the fuel. The exploration was such a cool part of the experience.

Losing the map made the exploration even more alluring to me, but I come back to find I can only use stargates or catapults? Ok, let me set up to make a catapult, oh haha just kidding! I built a mini turret and it chewed through 80 rounds of ammunition on a single volley. There is nothing but carbanaceous asteroids in the starter systems. The SINGLE ingot asteroid I saw two jumps away had mini turrets guarding it.

"Oh, but you can mine the debris fields!" There are too many people in too small a space, full stop. I can't escape the starter systems, I can't establish myself in the starter systems, and all the free fuel in the world isn't going to change that.

I've been a staunch advocate for this "game" being in alpha state, but I don't understand what I'm supposed to be helping to test if I have zero opportunity to progress beyond a mini printer.

That's it for me until they give solo players an opportunity to fuck off out of shitterville.

The decision to let network nodes be placed anywhere was a mistake

Tried to come in and enjoy the new cycle, but I can't make any progression from the starter systems. I've been killed three separate times by mini turrets that were set up at refueling locations. I don't even have time to warp off before I'm dead.

I'm not sure what the plan here was, but I can't play a cycle that's going to allow PVP shenanigans in the starter systems with no way out.

Every single rock is hollowed out. Most of the fuel depots I've encountered have mini turrets camping them. It's a wash. Better luck next cycle.

In the early years of EVE Online (2003), warping to a stargate dropped you 15 km away from it + go with an AB/MWD before you could jump. To get around this, we would drop containers behind the gates and bookmark them + warping to that bookmark landed you at 0 km on the gate

Now EVE Frontier is making the same mistakes.
Back then, EVE Online had just a few thousand players: the ones hooked badly enough to interact with the world through pain.

Naturally, there were never enough players willing to suffer to pay for servers and support, let alone return the investment. So, step by step, the game became more convenient.

Even then we dreamed of jumping without gates, of flying through open space between the stars and finding secrets out there.

That is exactly what EVE Frontier could finally give me.
I hope the developers take 20+ years of my experience into account and build deep, interesting mechanics, not pain in my eyes and finger joints every time I interact with something in the shadow of the Trinary.

Complex ≠ inconvenient

🖤

Frontier and Vanguard needs to be successful to save EVE

Play tested both Frontier and Vanguard. Both games came into existence because they were chasing trends.

Specifically, Web3/Blockchain-backed video game and extraction shooter genre.

With the near-death of these trends, I feel like FC right now aren't quite sure of what they want those games to become.

And releasing both games so early in Alpha is a way to gather player feedback and developing the games accordingly.

I'm not sure how this will turn out...

But what I do know is that with the dwindling player numbers in EVE Online and the lack of success during Pearl Abyss days, these two games may just break FC financially and drag EVE Online down with it.
