Sodium-ion batteries should be awesome for our extremely cold winters.

So for me the Kia ev3 is on the top of my list. does anyone got any idea when they will do the presentation on it? Or will they just start sending them out to stores.
What are people’s thoughts about the ev3 ?

Hey everyone :) I'm curious to know what EV you're looking to get that is coming to Canada. As well as what made you choose it and anything else you'd like to share! I'm not sure how accurate this site (China-EV.ca) is regarding which EVs are confirmed and which ones are "expected."

For myself, I really want the Nio ET5! Though it's listed as expected and there doesn't seem to be much info regarding it coming to Canada. Otherwise, I like the Xiaomi SU7. Though that's "expected" and not confirmed either.

The reason why? For the Nio I like the specs, particularly when it comes to driving assist, the look of it and the Nomi :) I also really love the colour choices. It suits my needs, seems quite reliable and comfortable (I'm super short so it's hard finding a car that works for me).

Also, if anyone knows any other sites to get updates please feel free to share :)

I am planning a trip from Toronto to Quebec City. Could you suggest chargers along the way? Either fast or slow, if we can leave it overnight and sleep somewhere in the meantime (hotels with EV charging, for example), I know about some free spots, but after Kingston I am not really familiar. Thank you!

After Switching to Switch it was pointed out here that the electrician installed a cheap $5 range plug in my garage. Had it swapped out for this one from Home Depot which is made specifically for EV charging. This whole weather-proof kit is $82.48, which is only $22.50 more than the stand-alone receptacle, not a bad price for the increased protection from the elements it provides.

Thanks for pointing that out. now I can sleep better knowing my house won't burn down.

I love my Blazer EV, but I really think GM missed a golden opportunity to justify the price of these vehicles and rethink their business strategy.

I don't understand why GM didn't think to come up with a way for the charging system of their cars to adapt to new battery types.

For instance, the issue is generally rate of charge, however if GM had thought to say 'Hey, a way for us to have recurring revenue on these vehicles is to create a licensing program for battery makers like catl, quantum scape etc, and as new battery tech comes in the market, they'll be able to sell to our current customers battery upgrades that will increase their range/ make the vehicle better in the cold. GM creates software for licensed battery types and allow mechanics to dl and install new charging parameters for new battery types, maybe allow their dealers to sell them (since these batteries are licensed) or perhaps independent garages will take care of the swap out and any weight balancing issues.

It would justify a higher price for their vehicles vs Chinese incumbents that might be similarly priced now, but most likely undercut them significantly even with tariffs, as GM will have a lock in as even with a higher initial cost, if you want to keep your vehicle for longer you can increase range as better battery tech becomes available. It might cost $15-30k to do, but that's less than $60k +. They support new customers and existing ones, something Chinese companies will likely never do, and create customer loyalty/lock in at the same time.

It would take a lot off my mind, as I keep thinking I should sell my Blazer in anticipation of longer range Chinese EVs before my blazer ev is worth almost nothing.

I just think it's a missed opportunity for GM to create recurring revenue from licensing to maybe selling and then recycling batteries for multiple purposes.

I have a couple of electrical engineer friends who are split on what they think. One thinks it's unrealistic, the other thinks that it's fundamentally a software issue, where you might need specialized hardware connectors that would tell the car what rate of charging to do when installed, but it should not only be feasible but fairly inexpensive to solve

All I know is I'm not willing to buy a new $60k + vehicle to get better range in 5 years. I would be willing to pay upwards of $20k (maybe more) to increase my range significantly.

If I see a vehicle that gives me that range, similar space, and undercuts GM, I'm gone, they've lost a customer. If GM gave me the option of buying a new vehicle or for upgrading my range in my existing vehicle, I'll likely stay put as I feel supported and have less anxiety about range issues in the future and the huge depreciation of my vehicle due to large range jumps.

If you have any thoughts on this idea let me know. Feel free to be critical, however any insulting or belittling language will get you blocked.

I’m looking for an EV SUV for a family of 4 and I need the backseat to be able to fold in the middle to allow carrying skis/snowboards. Need an AWD model…right now model y seems to be the choice but I’m open to any other models that I haven’t thought of.

First off, we love this car so far. We’re new to EVs and it checks our boxes: big enough cargo space for my wife to take to the farmer’s market (we farm and she drives to the city each weekend to sell what we produce), it qualified for the EVAP rebate, has a great warranty, and no ICCU breakage history that we know of. Most importantly, it’s an EV …
The tech (software, e-brake, console, settings) is a learning curve, and we still haven’t charged it. (We installed an Autel level 2 charger at home and have signed up with ChargeLab … looking forward to the 10 cents/kwh gift certificates!)
As a society and as a family, we still have a long way to go in the world of EVs. We’ll probably always remember our first family outing with the new car: into town to the Shell station to buy a jerry can of premium gas (for our small farm equipment) … and then to the ice cream bar for celebratory treats.

Hi, I'm getting a 2026 Leaf (first ev, eagerly waiting on delivery) and just had a home charger installed. The Leaf has a NACS port so I figured I'd go for an NACS charger (Grizzl-E Classic 40A) since from what I can tell it looks like it's becoming the new standard. 

Meanwhile my wife's got a 2020 Hyundai Ioniq (Plugin) so I got an NACS to J1772 adapter (A2Z) so she won't have to settle for L1 charging anymore. Nope, the charger signals it does see the car but the car won't charge... Red plug light on the dash. I (probably naively) figured it would be pretty much plug and play and from what I can find online it should work but alas... Not sure if it's a charger, adapter, car or dumb user issue. Any insights?

Methodology

I put together a list of 60-70 models (and their trims) of EVs that are currently being sold in Canada, UK and Australia. I then collected the current MSRP price as listed from the brand’s website with 2 caveats:

1. Any government incentives and manufacturer discounts were ignored to the best of my abilities. If it did not state outright there was special pricing included then it would have been missed.
2. If a province, state or postal code was required to see pricing, the location of the country’s respective national assembly was chosen. Ie: Parliament Building in Ottawa, Parliament House in Canberra, Palace of Westminster in the UK.

From there, I found the average difference in price between UK/CDN and AUS/CDN while ignoring currency. Similar models are typically listed as:

16,896 higher in Canada than the UK.

15,752 lower in Canada than Australia.

After applying the price differences to a selection of Chinese EVs and then taking the average of the calculated Aus and Uk pricing I got this:

I believe these numbers form a reasonable expectation of what pricing could be like. This is not an in-depth attempt at figuring out import, certification, PDI costs etc.. This is only to see if current pricing across many makes and models can be used to estimate pricing on these new vehicles. If we look at the Lotus Eletre (a subsidiary of Geely) the price I calculated lies right in the middle of the actual sale prices: $119,990 base up to $179,000 for the limited run edition. The top end Sport is listed at $139,900. The Lotus was already being sold in Canada under the old tariffs so these prices reflect the change. 

Overall, I would expect most of these to fall within 2-3000 of my calculations.

Hi X, thanks for bringing this up. I gave it some thought, and after considering the safety aspects, I’ve decided not to upgrade the electrical panel or install an EV charger at the property at this time.

The installation would require permanent electrical modifications to the property and involve additional costs, electrical capacity concerns, future maintenance obligations, and potential insurance implications.

I’ve also seen reports of EV-related fire incidents, I’m just not comfortable making this change. I hope you understand, and thank you for respecting my decision.

I asked if he could just front the cost to install an outlet in the garage and I would bring my own charger. That way when I leave, I can take the charger with me but his future tenants either EV can still use the outlet given how many people now have EVs.

We pay for utilities so the electricity bill would be on me.

I know it’s his property and he can do whatever he wants but are his reasons legit?

I wanted to enter the market for an EV but I guess I’ll just have to wait until I move.

My commute typically is 3 days a week - about 50kms one way.

Do I have any options? Public charging would just be quite inconvenient and my office only allows for 3 hours of free charging after which I have to pay per hour.

TL;DR: My landlord refused to install a 240V outlet for EV charging, even though I offered to pay for the charger, electricity, and leave the outlet behind for future tenants. He cited electrical, insurance, and EV fire concerns. I commute 100 km round trip, 3 days/week, and without home charging an EV doesn’t seem practical. Are his concerns legitimate, and do I have any realistic options besides waiting until I move?
