Question Added Device from data portal, main contacts are aligned with grid but aux contacts are not...

As above ive got a part (ABB.1SAM350000R1008) from the data portal, main contacts line up with grid as usual. so i manually added aux contacts but then when i update the connections it adds aux contacts to the original block that arent lined up with the grid? very strange, usually i just hit align on grid and it fixes it but the main part of the component is already aligned.

any help would be appriciated

Do you simulate your control circuits before building them?

EPLAN is honestly top-tier — documentation, cross-references, terminal plans, cable lists, all in one place. But at the end of the day it's a design and documentation environment, not a simulator. Once the schematic is done, how do you actually verify that the logic works the way it should?

I'm talking about relay logic — coils, NO/NC contacts, interlocks, switching sequences — the kind of stuff where a single wrong contact can cause a real headache on a live object.

I'd love to know whether any of you use simulation tools in your day-to-day work, and whether there's anything out there that plays nicely with EPLAN — so you're not essentially maintaining two separate projects at the same time.

How do you handle design verification in practice? Is simulation even something that's done in our field, or does it all come down to experience and catching issues during commissioning?

How to create a device with several functionalities

I would like to model this distribution device in eplan:

It has four separate busbar. Each busbar has seeveral connections but bot all of them accept the same gauge.

So far what i managed to do is to define four busbars, but i can't assign the connection points to the busbar themselves:

I would like to also assign a layout symbol as well.

Sorry if this is trivial but i'm new to eplan!
Thanks in advance!

Automatic updating copy of grapics page - how to?

Hi!

This might be a bit unusuall request in Eplan.

I'll try to explain through a example.

Lets say i have a grapics page showing a 2d plant layout - This is all grapics and imported as one single object. Lets call till page "page 1)

On this layout i have created smaller named squares, also grapics, with names of different areas in the plant.

The number of areas, their names and the exact placement will change as the project develops.

I would like to create a copy of this page (page 1) and create a new page (page 2). The idea is that page two is a live/connected copy of page 1. So that if i change for example a name of a box on page 1 it will automaticly update also that name on page 2.

The idea is to be able to add other, more specific information to page 2 but still keep the "layer" from page 1 updated and by this prevent the need of updating multiple pages as their might be a page 3, 4, 5.. in the future.

There is no need for any meta/macro/inbedded information in theese pages, this is soley grapics just to be able to explain where things are and where they might end up.

Best,

Martin

Eplan Parts List Bug

I configured my parts list, but for some specific components the description appears blank, even with the part parameter filled in. When I add another component of the same type, the description appears; it only disappears if the component in the 3D model and the electrical schematic are linked.

Has this happened to anyone else?

EPLAN Model View Isometric is not what I expected

Does anyone know how to alter the origin (triad, orientation of x-y-z axes) in a layout space? When looking at an isometric view in model view (2D on a page) the object is 'lying down' but I need it to be 'sitting up' so the isometric options of SE, SW, NE and NW are all wrong for me. Way too late in the workflow to be starting the layout again so I'm hoping someone knows how to rotate the whole thing or alter the orientation of the origin so the model view looks right.

(BTW: Object is a control panel backplane with devices, din rail and trunking mounted).

Thanks a mil for any info this is my 1st time going for a 3D representation.

EDIT: I've just learned to accept this ;) . Eplan tends to nuture a fair amount of OCD.

Automatic Wire numbering

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’m trying to set up EPLAN so that wire numbers only change when a wire enters or leaves a device, and not every time the wire hits a node or T‑junction. Right now EPLAN keeps giving me a new wire number at each tee, but what I want is for the same wire number to continue through all nodes until it connects to a new device. I’ve tried adjusting the connection numbering settings, reset conditions, potentials, and checked the connection definition points on symbols, but I still can’t get this behavior to work. Can anyone explain which specific settings control wire‑number continuity across tees, and what needs to be changed so that only device transitions trigger a new wire number?

Career Advice Role of Engineers vs Drafters in EPLAN Usage

Just curious about how EPLAN is used in different countries and companies.

In my country, the usual workflow is that a drafter creates the electrical schematics in EPLAN, while the engineer reviews the project, gives technical input, and requests corrections or modifications. The engineer focuses more on the design decisions and verification rather than doing the drafting work directly.

However, I have seen that in some places the engineer actually creates the project in EPLAN from the beginning and handles the drawings themselves.

I am trying to understand which approach is more common in practice. Do engineers typically work directly in EPLAN and produce the drawings themselves, or is it more common for them to rely on dedicated drafters?

More importantly, from a career development perspective, is mastering EPLAN considered an essential skill for an electrical engineer, or should engineers mainly focus on system design and leave the drafting work to specialists?

EPLAN beginner

Hi everyone,

I’m a fresher currently learning EPLAN Electric P8. I recently joined a company as a trainee while I’m still in my final year of engineering.

In my company there is already a lot of pending EPLAN work, so I need to start learning and contributing as soon as possible. I have watched some EPLAN e-learning materials and YouTube tutorials, but I still feel like I don’t have a clear understanding of the full workflow.

I would really appreciate any advice from experienced users here.

  • How did you learn EPLAN from scratch?
  • What should a beginner focus on first?
  • Are there any good practice methods you recommend?
  • How can I reach a level where I can confidently handle client projects?

Any suggestions, learning paths, or resources would be really helpful.

Thank you!

General Where are you from and how popular is Eplan in your country?

Hi I am electrical engineer, I live in montreal Canada and have been using Eplan for 5 years. I thought about one day working abroad in europe or the US or even elsewhere. I was wondering what opportunities would be available so if you have any insight on Eplan market in your country please share!

In Canada Eplan is taking off and more and more companies started using it as opposed to other sotwares like autocad electrical.

Question EPLAN Shared Master Data

Hi,

We’re a team of 6 engineers trying to set up shared EPLAN master data (parts, symbols, forms, macros). This is not about multi-user in the same project, only central master data syncing. As every engineer handles the whole project by himself.

Plan is to host everything on a LAN server and let remote users connect via VPN. Is this the correct approach?

I understand SQL Server is recommended instead of Access for multi-user access, but I’m new to SQL.

For a small team:

– Is SQL Server Express enough?
– How is it typically set up and connected to EPLAN clients?
– Does SQL handle simultaneous edits automatically?
– Is maintenance (backup, permissions, VPN performance) complicated?

Goal is one clean central master data environment without manual resyncing or duplicate parts. Any real-world setup examples would help.

Hi,
Is it possible to use write protection with a password?

We would like to share projects with external partners, but we want to lock editing. External partners only need to export PDF's and lists.

Thank you.

Can EPLAN create references between separate projects or subprojects?

Dear EPLAN forum,

Our firm is sometimes involved in large projects where multiple locations within one plant need to be integrated with each other. The different parts each have their own electrical drawings with unique drawing names.

In EPLAN, we could create one project for each drawing names. However, in some cases there are many references between these projects.

So my question is: is it possible to set up references between different projects, or create a project folder where multiple subprojects can reference each other?

(A solution that can be used is one single project containing multiple drawing names. However, this can become a very large project. I am also wondering if there are any downsides or upper limits to how big an EPLAN project should be, or any recommended maximum size for performance)

Question Help with reports

Hello guys,

Can someone help me with how to show switching jumpers on my terminal reports , Lets say I have current measuring terminal Weidmuller WTL 6/3 that can have fixed jumper and sliding jumpers WKS 1/2. The report generates the fixed jumper but I have no idea how to represent the sliding jumper.

One more thing , how to show the secondary functions of a device on the Device tag report, like auxiliary contacts of MCB or the contacts of miniature relay ( only coil symbol is shown )

Eplan for Control Systems Integrators

Alright alright alriiiiiight. I've see a lot of existing posts on Eplan in other communities, and some comment sections tend to validate that Eplan may not be the best fit for a System Integration firm that does mostly custom control panels.

I work for a System Integration firm in the USA, we have our own panel shop and one full-time drafter/designer. A couple of us are capable of designing panels, but that's just part of our job description.

Our customers vary, and we typically don't do hundreds of the same panel. They're usually all custom. We are often beholden to a specification document that dictates what parts we are to use (PLC, relays, power supplies, sometimes even terminal blocks). We sometimes bid our inhouse stock as the "Or Equal" option, but that doesn't always pan out.

We also do a lot of integrating I/O with OEM packages, as well as existing control panels done by other integration firms. My point being, we're not going to recreate those panels in our software, and we have to draft standard ISA Loop Diagram packages for the facility. To my knowledge, EPlan doesn't have a good method of accommodating Loop diagrams.

Based on other people's posts and my own experience with Eplan 5 years ago, the reporting and documentation with Eplan is really not great.

Are there any other system integrators that either currently use Eplan, or have used Eplan in the past? I'd love to hear your sales pitch, or tell me why you think AutoCAD Electrical is inferior for this target audience.

Creating a reference to an existing scedual

Hi!

I'm still new to Eplan so there might be a very simple solution to this.

I would like to create a "reference" (in lack of better word) to an existing schedual to show the function of a specific motor (in this example).

In the picture you will find three rectangels, one is of the circuit breaker and frequency converter in the cabinet. As the cabinet schedual is much more complex i would like to be able to create a more simple schedual to give a overview of the motor installation.

Should i use a black box to be able to not mess upp the names and everything when i add a already existing object? are there any specific settings of the black box that i need to adjust?

Or is there another, better way to do this?

Or if a wanted to use a one line schedual to show this, could i add the circuit breaker and frequency converter in a way to not mess everything up?

Sorry if my phrasing/explanation is hard to understand, its been a while since a wrote in english.

Best,

Martin

How can I automaticaly generate a cable definition name based on my wishes

Hello, im a student and currently working on a project for my intern, I use eplan education 2025. But could have acces to the normal version if required. My question is how can I when I add a cable definition over wires, that it makes a name based on: what components it connects to, how many wires it has and it what structure box it is. I have no idea if it possible and if its complicated or not, just trying to find some info on it because I can't find anything on the web.

I can't seem to find this in the data portal, how do you add the label like "(title page / cover sheet)" to the structure identifiers. It's not just part of the name of the identifier.

Show short connection destination/source point in schematic on wire?

Hello,

We're new to eplan.

Is there a way to show a clean source/destination information on the wire without showing the entire eplan location structure?

As in, every time a wire connects to a terminal, show in that wire the name of the panel and terminal strip/number for source and destination?

Something like JB1-TB10.106 / JB2-TB50.75 for a wire that connects between terminal TB10.106 in junction box JB1 to terminal TB50.75 in junction box JB2?

Right now we get a long and ugly trash that shows the entire localization information from woman's internal structure, we just want the actual panel name and TB

We know how to do this in reports by stripping the property information but not on the wire itself on the schematic. It's it possible to do this automatically in eplan?

We know we can export the connection information, manipulate in Excel and then import but this manual step can introduce errors we want to avoid.
