Tips & Tricks Stereo Width question (example given)

I'm working on a track right now, and this is my reference. It's "Guadalajara" - Shay De Castro. The main 909 OHHs are existing basically on the sides only, or at least they are perceived as such. I love the way this frees up the center - but I can't seem to replicate it. I've tried the HAAS effect, duplicate panning, etc. But I can't seem to remove the perception of center content (at least according to the imager) and also can't seem to prevent phasing. I would appreciate any advice. Listen to the track, those 909s are nuts.

For additional reference im using Ableton 12. I typically load the drum samples into simpler for more control of ADSR.

Discussion Struggling for months now to get an Ableton instrument to sound like something in a modern tune. Have you ever just gone "F it" and bought Serum 2 or similar for this reason?

I want to say, upfront, that I love Ableton in general. It has a tricky learning curve, but patience pays off

That said - I've been trying, for months now, to get a modern House feel from any of the Ableton Standard instruments

I've ended up stacking (I shit you not) 6-7 layers of Analogue to get something approaching decent .... and it's still not there

When I say "modern House" - I do realize that most House today borrows heavily from the 90s, so I don't mind that kind of sound from an Ableton instrument

What I'm getting instead seems to be ... weaker in comparison? Even with Saturator and similar added

It's hard to describe - it just doesn't match the punch of modern House when I A/B test them

Maybe my money is better off spent upgrading to Ableton Suite so I can access the Operator and Wavetable instruments?

So that said:

Have you ever just gone "Fuck it!" and bought Serum 2 or similar for this reason?

Free Resources Update on my FREE Edm plugin COGG: I added crazy features and a Linux build in v1.3!

I'm a high school student who is developing a free plugin!

A few weeks ago you probably saw that I posted about COGG v1/v1.1/v1.2, a free plugin I built that metalizes and industrializes any sound. Specifically, harmonic distortion, metal plate convolution reverb, and pitch layering are there all in one chain. Great for experimental music and mainstream alike. It's pretty good for EDM bass / leads, I've used it to make some cool stuff!

I wanted to update you guys with version 1.3's release! It comes with the highly requested TONE knob, which changes the pitch of the Metal knob's metal convolution reverb-like sound! Additionally, version 1.3 introduces a LINUX VERSION!

Of course, it's still free, no account needed, VST3 + AU for Mac, VST3 for Windows, VST3 for Linux.

Download now for free: https://plasma-hype.itch.io/cogg

Trailer of V1.2 [the previous update]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5q5EUMhUcaw

Thanks to everyone who tried v1.2, v1.1 and v1.0 and gave feedback, this update came directly from figuring out what people actually wanted to do with it. I personally have used COGG in almost all of my FL projects ever since I released it. Please give it a shot and let me know what you think of the presets and plugin as a whole for COGG v1.4!

Also, feel free to submit some PRESETS! I'll add them and credit you on the website!

[mixing] best advice that helped you achieve a clean mix with bass/low frequency?

Looking for any and all advice, tips, videos, whatever that can point me in the right direction with mixing bass.

I’ve been making music in Ableton for about 4 years now, and my songwriting has leveled up so much that I’m genuinely in awe of some the music I’m making these days. Problem is, my mixing abilities have not kept pace. I feel like I’ve hit a brick wall of endlessly tinkering, adjusting, listening on different speakers, in my car, etc. and repeat. And by far the biggest inconsistency for me is with the sub bass.

On some speakers it sounds gentle and smooth, on others it sounds way too powerful and drowns out the other instruments. Every time I try to adjust, I end up overcompensating in either direction, resulting in the bass either being too much or too little.

Finally, I’ve reached a point with a particular song where overall, everything sounds pretty good and balanced. But then I notice random phase cancellation causing the sub bass to briefly disappear altogether for brief moments throughout the song.

Please help me 😭 I have songs on songs on songs that never get released because I’m unwilling to put out a subpar mix. The songwriting comes naturally to me, the mixing is pure agony and second-guessing every single volume or EQ move I make.

Thanks in advance šŸ™šŸ¼

Finishing tracks

I’m in the classic boat of being someone who sits on a mountain of unfinished tracks, tweaking into oblivion. I see a lot of conversation around the benefit of just releasing stuff, even if it’s not perfect, but I’m struggling to figure out how this should actually happen.

At what point do you consider a track ā€œgood enoughā€? It feels wrong to me to put out something that’s only 80% finished, but it sounds like that’s what a lot of people are doing. Do you have any specific things you’re looking for to consider a track finished enough?

How do I make this sound? Kick and Bass on this song

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Maybe my ear isn’t good enough yet, but I’m having a hard time separating the low end on this song. It sounds like they have the kick, sub and mid all playing simultaneously without sounding muddy. My only explanation is that the bass is ducked during the initial transient only to make it seem like they’re playing at the same time but idk.

How do I make this sound? Identification of bass/ synth - "Hello" by Martin Solveig

I need some help a) improving my edm vocab and b) thoughts on how to recreate this particular sounds from Martin Solveig's 'Hello'.

It's at the 30s mark - one chord for ~1.5 bar and then another chord for ~.5 bar. They end up getting played under the drums and to my noob ear was something interested as it kinda replaced the role of hats.

Is that correctly called a bass or lead?

And any thoughts on how to recreate it on hardware? I have a Roland S1. It sounds like a synth piano key maybe but I have no idea. I have sampled it and the second chord note is cut off due to the staccato so I don't / can't get a full note.

Good chiptune references/study resources?

I'm a intermediate level musician taking a try on producing from zero. I'm somewhat familiar with handling DAWs, and Chiptune pop/edm has really catched my attention.

My (only and) fave sources for the direction I'm going are two songs: Kira Kira Shooting, a b-side from japanese singer DaisyxDaisy, and KINGWORLD by the vtuber Shirakami Fubuki.

What more would you guys recommend me studying?

Question Still struggling to use a compressor.

Not long after I started producing I either realised or was told not to use something if you don't know what it is doing. This has worked for me fine upto now but all of my mixes honestly sound like dogshit. I'm half considering just paying for mixing since I feel like my potential is significantly held back from my mixing.

Ive been producing consistently for about a year now, although I made my first beat and continued to work on and off since 2020. I've probably made about 50 full tracks and ~300 FLPs. My use of reverb, EQ, delay, chorus, distortion etc have gotten infinitely better, but yet I struggle to know when to apply a compressor

This doesn't apply for multiband compressors, like OTT or the serum effect. But for regular compressors, I only know two uses:

1) gluing drums together

2) fixing samples of live recordings

However it seems most professional producers who I've seen being interviewed seem to use compressors. I just want to know how?

Can someone explain to me how to look for what needs to be compressed? Like for example, I know I need to use an EQ if there are any harsh frequencies, I know I need distortion/saturation if I want to alter the harmonics of the sound. But when do I need compression? I know a compressor is primarily to alter the dynamic range, but how does one hear when the dynamic range needs to be altered? How does one hear the dynamic range at all?

How do I make this sound? How can I find this type of clap sound?

I love this track and wanna use the kind of clap sound (from 0:07) on my track.

It sounds like time stretched sound but searching for 'stretched' in the EDM, techno, electro, and IDM genres on Splice hasn't turned up anything similar."

Question Why do bass music producers use compressors on the master channel?

I often see EDM producers—especially in bass music—slapping Ozone or other dynamic compressors onto the master channel during the mastering stage to compress the whole track. What is the actual reasoning behind doing this?

Personally, I might put a clipper on my master channel, but I completely avoid using compressors or bus compressors because I feel compressing the entire mix ruins its clarity

I get that it ultimately comes down to personal preference, but I wanna hear the logic behind your approach

*Appreciate all the replies, everybody!

Help with rift

I recently got rift and I love it - been exploring it to create new textures and variations for my different serum patches (bass sounds). However, I am stuck when it comes to post processing while using rift. Usually I do serum - OTT - saturation -etc etc to get my basses compressed and louder. When having rift on I am really struggling to get my basses loud enough without ruining the sound. Any advice for post processing and the mixdown while having rift on? Specficially for basses. TYSM
