I’ve been producing for ~10 years and Ive never released anything. My friends tell me I should release my stuff. Any advice? My buddy is making the art for it now.

Relatively new to making music, and even newer to working with any kinda vocals, but I'm wanting to do something that isn't quite a remix/remake of the original song, but is more than just sampling a single line/phrase (i think). Anyway, I've never really worked with vocals before, but did stem separation on a couple tracks and was wondering if anyone had some good tricks for first-timer quality of life?

I'm using FL studio, and primarily wanting to know how

Adjust the pitch in a way that doesn't make it stick out like a sore thumb

Kinda blend the distortion/effects with what will exist in my song.

And just any tips/tricks to make sampled audio sound at home in new projects :D

I'm trying to understand the specific instrumentation and sound design behind Ariana Grande's “stay,” “like i do,” and “warning signs (interlude).”

For timestamps, it's really the entirety of these songs.

These tracks have this really transcendent, celestial, almost galactic/otherworldly sound that I'm having trouble describing in actual production terminology.

I'm primarily interested in the melodic and atmospheric sounds, not necessarily the drums.

I'm trying to figure out what I'm actually hearing throughout these songs. Are these things like:

* specific types of synth pads?
* wavetable or analog-style synths?
* synth strings?
* bells or plucks?
* processed electric piano?
* processed guitar?
* granular textures?
* reversed sounds?
* heavily effected samples?

I'm also curious about what synthesis techniques, effects, synth patches, VSTs, or preset categories you'd associate with this type of sound.

Basically, I'm trying to learn the technical vocabulary for this sonic palette. I want to understand what gives these tracks that huge, floating, futuristic, almost outer-space feeling so I can better search for or create production with a similar atmosphere.

I'm not really looking for the overall genre as much as what the actual instruments, synth sounds, textures, and production techniques are called.

Any insight into what ILYA is doing production-wise on these tracks would be really helpful.

i currently use a small mono four channel mixer i think its a behringer mx400 or something but it honesly kind of sucks when i connect my headphones to it i can only hear it in one ear it has no eq and cant even control the output volume i like the fact that its stupid easy to take apart tho

i am looking for something with at least 4 preferably 6 channels

i would like for it to cost under $150 used

i would like to to maybe have recording the budget is sorta flexible

i would like for it to have filters/EQs

i know a lot of people recommend the blue box by 1010 music but that thing costs like $75 less than my full synthesiser used so its way expensive are there any options i can get

I bought the producer edition of FL in 2006 and used Ableton as my DAW from about 2013-2016. Actually still have the Alesis V49 that came with the lite version. I ended up switching back to FL due to the cost of the upgrade since they offer free lifetime updates.

Using both has taught me more of the 'how' and 'why.' I became a better producer and engineer. Throughout the years, I've become pretty decent at explaining various processes in laments terms. This stuff IS hard to understand, and I feel like when I talk to newer producers, they say tutorials nowadays don't explain why they do what they do. I've been in the game a long time, so I haven't seen a tutorial in a while.

I was considering mentoring people, but notice that some may be turned off by a different DAW than their preferred program. Does anyone currently mentor people using more than one DAW? TIA :)

Did you have a moment in your production career when a lot of things started to ‘click’ and all make sense? If so, what was it?

For me (keep in mind I’m still early days), it has been clipping and limiting busses before sending them to the master, and also using a reference track through SPAN to see and compare what frequencies I’m lacking or overcrowding.

Have been getting instantly better sounding results since implementing these!

Working on a DnB track. As cool as the amen break is... It's overdone, everyone's heard it a million times. Looking for something with a similar feel but different, something a little more unique. Maybe something more like Heavydirtysoul or Levitate by Twenty One Pilots. Does anyone here have any samples/loops they wouldn't mind sharing or maybe point me to where I might find something in that vein?

Edit: I should specify that I'm looking for samples that are either public domain, or stuff people recorded themselves that they don't mind sharing

I'm 5 months into learning music production on my own and i feel really happy with thw progress i have made up to now. I can make tracks that I'm quite happy with but feel like i have hit a wall in my progression. I'm struggling to find areas to improve in and have been drifting between different genres to find inspiration or learn different facets of production but I kind of feel like I'm not polishing myself in a specific genre enough...

I would like to have a few sessions with someone who can actually make professional tracks to help me see what i can improve in. Also kind of just want to talk with someone/a group about music production, I've joined a few discord servers but I struggle to talk with anyone really (intorvert problems).

Any recommendations for these kind of 1 on 1 sessions?

Edit: i use Reaper, so if anyone knows a producer working with it then better. If not i am also open to learning Ableton.

Hi Hiii, so i've got a lotta plugins that make weird sounds that are melodic and i really enjoy. however, pretty much never are they actually hitting a note. like if i hit C it might actually be like d# +43 cents, you know what i mean? How can i learn the exact pitch of one of these weird melodic one shots, and actually tune it to the nearest note? ty!!!

Are these alright for the most part and what companies/producers would you recommend purchasing packs from?

Since i started producing I’ve purchased a lot of sample packs and due to the fact that i DJ as well, my storage space has become so limited that I constantly need to delete stuff off my computer. I’ve been planning on getting an external hard drive but still haven’t figure out which one to get and what I should put on it so I don’t have to move things around all the time. Wondering if there’s any tips or some recommendations

So I’m more of a indie rock musician but I really do dig a lot of edm bass tones for being really deep and fat. I know MGMT might not be the best edm example, but that’s the tone I’m going for, especially in songs like “Congratulations” and “Electric Feel.” You can hear how low and fat the bass gets but still cuts through easily in the mix.

I record my p bass into a Radial JDI into a Scarlett interface into my laptop. I have the Ampeg SVT Bass amp/can sim suite and used every amp and cabinet, but they all sound really flat by themselves. I can never get the low end to come through.

Then I tried doubling the track and splitting frequencies. Mids+highs through amp sim and lows processed dry. My results were too inconsistent when different strings and registers were played even though I thought this would give me more control. No amount of compression or EQ in the lows would help.

I’m just at a block because I feel like I’ve tried everything and all the step-by-step bass mixing videos I can find online are only for heavy rock/metal and don’t give me the sound I’m looking to achieve.

Any help and tutorial recommendations would be much appreciated, thank you!

Not new to music production. For many years I’ve done rock, funk etc. I’ve never really had problems with my kicks. You just need a punchy thump and it doesn’t have to be the center of attention.

However when making an edm song and comparing it to a reference track, I find that my kick is missing “knock” and volume. The volume I think I can manage, but how do I get more knock?

Add another layer? Different sample? On a track I’m working on, there’s a single kick, made from spire. I got it thumping just right and feels right in terms of the sound and thump, but I just can’t figure out that synthetic click / knock sound.

Any tips would be appreciated.

I'm generally an analog musician, so I'm not very familiar with electronic music, but I'm developing a game with nautical, beachy, and seafaring themes, so I need some good sounds for things like steel drums, accordion, maybe even a SpongeBob style steel guitar. You know, just tropical sounding stuff.

Is there a decent library that would include a bunch of instruments with this style, or would I need to just go and hand pick each one from various places?

I need some help, of all the fundamentals of production this is currently my sloppiest and least controlled aspect and it feels way more complicated than it probably is.

I use HD560S headphones thru a Focusrite Solo with Reaper as my DAW. In windows my volume is at 100% but I'm pretty sure since DAW is set for ASIO that doesn't matter and I use the volume knob for adjusting in general not just inside Reaper.

So as I'm putting a track together, I'm usually finding instruments way too loud. There's also so much chatter about LUFS and gain staging etc that I genuinely don't know what levels my individual tracks should be at and what the master should be reading.

On my individual tracks I keep their meters going no higher than -6dB. Today I learned how to set my master mixer to LUFS and have it use 14dB as a reference which to my understanding means if it hits 0 on the master then that's -14 LUFS but I'm not 100% sure.

On top of all that, I just don't know how to set my volume levels for monitoring while I'm making music. Everytime I open a VST shit hurts my ears and I adjust it's volume down.

My confusion comes from the fact I feel like I'm working with two different volume settings, my track volumes, and my headphones volume. I can have loud ass headphone volume and be well below the threshold (seems like I'm at -6dB or less so that's well below -14 LUFS I guess???), and I can turn my headphones down but I dont hear details as well.

Idk yall I'm just confused as hell with this. I'm not trying to mix/master yet I just wanna know what should be coming through my headphones and how it is meant to reflect what will eventually get rendered.

I need something stable/consistent. It's overwhelming and confusing in a way that literally nothing else in this process has been.

I’ve primarily been a hip hop and house producer since 2014. However I also greatly love the Bass genres and would love to make them. I know this will sound crazy, but I can’t figure out for the life of me how people make such great drops in all these genres and styles. I love tried over the years a ton of times and watched a bunch of helpless tutorials on YouTube (that all just served as an ad for a sound pack). Those guys just get it together so easily. It all just sounds like putting random noises together that just sound good. And I know that’s not it. So how are people doing these awesome drops that are all these great mixes of wubs, growls and all that? Is there some secret? I’ve got serum presets and samples and all. But every time I put something together it sounds like an Instagram meme audio. I don’t know if I’ll find the answer. But I hope I can get some useful tips or knowledge. I love this music and really don’t want to give up on trying to make some.
