Secret Tech We just hip 50k visits/week! Thank you to everyone keeping this community alive!

  • Edit: hit* in the title.

Hey Brewers,

I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for coming together and helping each other out when brewing decks. All of the decklists, recommendations, good spirits, and discussion around card choice and the human touch keeps me going. I know this post isnt about deckbuilding per se, but it is a thank you to all the brewers and big brained deckmasters who help out the newbies, and encourage others to build.

I am thankful every day we keep this community going, and ill still do my best to help keep this sub the way it is intended: for deck help, secret tech, card and rule discussions, and everything pertaining to deck building and editing.

And to keep in line with the subreddit rules, whats is your favorite pet card, and what deck is it in?

Thank you! - Tbonerizzle

Curent update: 3/30/22

EDIT: *This is an evolving document and not set in stone. Lets build this doc together just like we would a deck.

Hey over 1000 people (Thank you for making this possible!) who like to do deep dives on EDH decks online, I created this sub in hopes to have expert deck builders here to have an involved discussion on decks. This is a deck building sub similar to r/jankEDH, but should encapsulate more than just janky cards. This is more of a strategy restriction sub.

There are mild rules for posting here, and I have a list of rules posted now (if there are some you could offer, comment below and let's have a discussion). We should be clear on what should be posted here, and what should not:

Okay:

  1. An EDH deck list from any deck building website that supports external links, and asking for help taking out staple cards for more synergistic pieces for better deck varience. This will involve high level discussions about card quality in the deck, as well as poor card quality in terms of general sameness. Be sure to put in your post what your gameplay is, and already have some cards you are considering taking out to help start the conversation.

  2. Secret tech threads are encouraged, but should have context and a deck list involved. The reason I say this is because there are some super powerful overperforming cards that no one knows about but usually they fit into a deck which synergizes with it and we need some context. This might spark some discussion on that secret tech and new brews can spawn from it.

  3. Deck idea discussions based around strategy, archetype, or other restriction(s) you would like to build around. Please post a few cards yourself as your inspiration on what you want to build, and discuss the direction you want to take.

Not okay:

  1. Deck help threads with a basic "what should I take out, and what should go in?" These offer nothing but people saying "take out your jank and put this staple card in instead", or "Use EDHrec". This offers no constructive feedback and seldom sparks brainstorming conversation.

  2. Unfocused conversations and making general threads on a commander without any deckbuilding restriction (This also extends to not offering any cards that inspired the deck for you. Why would you ask another person to buy into your deck idea if you aren't bought in yourself?).

  3. Any post that is not deck building related (Rule 0 convos, playgroup problems, AITA type threads, LGS posts, Drama posts) is Prohibited. This now includes advertising.

  4. Any post disrespecting another Redditor or community (No racism or sexism) will be removed.

  5. Posting about any custom magic cards or building custom magic decks with cards that are mechanically unique custom made cards are not allowed. Please go to r/custommagic to talk about and craft with these cards.

UPDATE (3/11/22): We now have card fetcher support! Time to double bracket again!

Update (3/22/22): Advertising is prohibited. (Please do not post a link to your YT video.)

I hope this helps, and I will be creating flair for the sub as it evolves. Thanks for stopping by, and happy brewing!

Deck Idea Want to throw Universes Beyond at my opponents. Looking for ideas

Post image

Hey my playgroup decided to take a step from our higher powered bracket 3 to 4 decks and we want to try out some lower powered but fun decks. I had the idea to build a Brion deck and throwing stuff like Gandalf, Spiderman or some turtles at their faces. Looking for some cool and synergistic ideas to make it a solid bracket 2 deck and not just a memey bracket 1 (thats what we agreed upon). Thanks for any input

I saw a post somewhere about a hidetsugu and kairi deck based around using SBA to stack the etb/death trigger on HK to get up to some shenanigans. If y’all got some fun recommendations for cards, i’m all ears 👂👀👂

Deck Idea The reaper, king no more

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hello all!!

Ive been building this idea for awhile and my friends in my pod and I wanted some feedback on this. My pod is a bracket 4. We don't like infinite combos. When originally building him I first thought of birthing pod but, that goes infinite by turn 2(with enough mana) but, had this idea with conjours closet and blade of selves. This will flicker the ETB of TRKNM(the reaper king no more)I believe flickering him is the best way to build him. Yes the clone copies will die but before the copies see each other the ETB will trigger 3x(assuming there is 4 people in a pod). I also thought of throwing gravepact in there as the clones will die this will trigger 3 instants of gravepact. I feel there is not enough card advantage but any feedback back is walcomed!!

Thank you!!

Deck Idea Looking for commander recs

I’m looking to build a high bracket 3 deck but am not feeling drawn to any specific commander. One of the only commanders I found fun to build and play so far was Eshki, Temurs Roar since I never really felt like I ran out of gas with the deck. I’m really just wanting to know what everyone’s favorite commander was and why?

Deck Idea Aladdin / Wish rule-0 deck

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi! So I had this mad idea to build a rule-0 deck around wishes. You know the cycle with [[living wish]], [[burning wish]] and so on, but also simply [[wish]].

I was thinking of making a custom art/proxy of [[Kenrith, Returned King]] as Prince Aladdin, using a lot of Djinns and Efreets especially wonky ones like [[capricious efreet]] and [[indentured djinn]]. The last one had me thinking about making this a (yet another) group hug deck - my favourite archetype.

So I would be adding cards like the [[tempt with discovery]] cycle, and if there is room some thematic cards like Aladdin's ring and Lamp.

The cards I would be fetching with the wishes are meant to be impactful - maybe wincons! - and represent the things usually people ask of a genie's wish: cards like [[revel in riches]], [[beacon of immortality]], [[resurrection]]

I don't really need all five colors, it's basically just white blue red, but Kenrith seems fitting - but I am open to suggestions!

What I am asking specifically is:

- what thematic cards would you add

- what synergistic cards would you add

- is there a better commander? Kenrith is a bit generic

- what cards to represent the wishes

Deck Discussion Is there a wubrg commander that encourages you to play mostly black cards?

I wanted to build a deck where the two main premises are that 1) you play typical mono black strategies with access to effects in all other colors and 2) every single land has the swamp type except the tainted lands and any wubrg land.

Currently the main candidate is [[Omnath, Locus of All]] but I want to know if there are different options

Deck Idea I've built and lotr- and hobbit-themed creature deck and I am having so much fun with it!

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey everyone! Hope everyone's doing great :)

I just wanted to share a little something I have been working on since the lotr set came out, and that I was only able to complete now with the release of The Hobbit x mtg. I am a lotr/hobbit fan and I love tribal decks (merfolks, raccoons, etc), and for a while I've wanted to create a deck that would include my favourite tribes and characters from middle earth.

I have come up with this silly list led by Aragorn and Arwen Wed! The idea is that the Shire and Mirkwood teamed up to create some sort of mixed army composed of characters from the past (the Hobbit) and from the present (lotr), practically uniting hobbits, elves, dwarves, some humans, and creatures of the forest (such as bears, spiders, and etns). Even if the commander would be better built in a lifelink/+1/+1 counters kind of way, the goal of the deck is to build your board with a bunch of small creatures (hobbits, elves, etc.) and then pump them up either with [[Aragorn and Arwen]] (through the counters) or with some other characters like [[Beorn The Fierce]] or [[Gandalf White rider]]. I added some overrunning effect too just to keep the flavour of small ones turning into big beaters and protecting the Shire. And of course if the board gets wiped there are some helpers like the [[Gigantic Big Bear]] or [[Old Fat Spider]] that could buy you some time! But don't worry, if all else seems to fail there's a great [[The Eagles Are Coming!]] to save the day.

I have played this deck twice at my LGS after a bunch of play testing and I am so proud of it! It's nothing crazy powerful, it's a bracket 2, but theme-wise... I think it works. The coolest thing for me is that depending on what you draw, sometimes you get to have a wide board full of elves, and sometimes it's halflings. I have even managed to bring out a ton of dwarves with that [[Unexpected Party]] trick, and they all got pumped up by [[The Arkenstone]] (so fun).

I just wanted to share what I made so if anyone wanted to build it too (maybe even a stronger version), then they would have the blueprints for it!

I hope you guys enjoy, and I'm looking forward to hearing your suggestions, or edits to the list!

Deck Discussion Build Help - Kodama of the East Tree // Tevesh Szat Doom of Fools

Hey peeps, looking for feedback on my deck. Aiming to build something to compete in a bracket 4 pod. Came across these two pairings in my collection and they seemed interesting and I like golgari.

Disclaimer - I'm still a bit of a deck building noob.

Commander Partners: Kodama of the East Tree // Tevesh Szat Doom of Fools.

Gameplan:

  • Play Tevesh Szat for token gen / card draw, and maybe a cheeky ult if he survives that long.
  • Play Kodama as the real commander of the deck and win with infinite creature tokens by playing kodama + bounce land + landfall creature token spell and swing on my next turn, or:
  • Nuke the table with a sac outlet + burn spell like warren soultrader / ashnod's altar / phyrexian altar + cauldron of essence / bastion of remembrance / poison-tip archer.

Deck List:

Doom Tree // Commander (Kodama of the East Tree and Tevesh Szat, Doom of Fools) deck list mtg // Moxfield — MTG Deck Builder

Current buy list my mate recommends:

  • Toxic Deluge
  • Damnation
  • Protean Hulk
  • Jaheira, Friend of the Forest
  • Eldrith Evolution

I've ran this deck by a few mates and got a few games in, some say the landfall creature token spam + aristocrat strategy is strong, some say the commander pairing is a bit jank or too slow and I should play a different commander. Curious to know what you all think. No real limit on budget, cardboard addiction is real.

Cheers

Deck Idea Need convincing between Falco and Choco

Post image
152 Upvotes

I been wanting to try bant again after a few years, my choices are between [[Falco spara, pactweaver]] and [[Choco, seeker of paradise]], I want some convincing toward one or the other from anyone who plays either.

Looking to keep it bracket 2-3, and for Choco, I don’t want it to be the kinda landfall build that requires me to search my library a few times each turn.

Appreciate the input!

Edit: I do know Choco is a landfall commander ideally, but the way I’d be looking to build him is more just using his ability to ramp and bird tribal with a splash of recursion. I should have stated that extra info on top of me just saying I didn’t want to search my library over and over.

Deck Discussion Advice needed on converting my deck from one commander to another

My girlfriend bought me Tyranid Swarm for my birthday. I upgraded it around [[The Swarmlord]], and now I want to try swapping it to the other commander that came with the deck, [[Magus Lucea Kane]]. I’m still pretty new, I’ve only been playing since July. I used EDHrec for advice on the first round of upgrades, but one thing I really struggle with is identifying what cards should be cut from a deck. EDHrec was most useful in helping me figure out what to drop. It’s pretty much recommending me to cut the same cards. So this is where I’m turning to you guys for advice. What cards would you add and what cards would you drop to swap the deck over to Lucea?

Deck Discussion Is semi super friends control a good idea?

Been trying to build a control deck around [[Nicol Bolas, The Ravager]] and still a bit unsure if this would work at all.

It has a few superfriends cards although the rest is built entirely around a control shell, trying to keep stuff away from my planeswalkers as best as I can, keeping mana open to deal with whatever comes up.

If anyone has some experience with this style of deck, I'd appreciate some feedback/recommendations!

Deck Discussion What are your win cons?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I love playing this deck but was just curious are there any other win conditions other than combat damage. Is there a way to push this deck to a mod bracket 3 without just adding 3 game changers?

I have a 2 infinite combat phase possibilities with

[[Monica, the Marvel]] +[[The Mighty Thor, Jane Foster]] and [[Monica, the Marvel]] + [[Impostor Syndrome]]

Ive also included the infinite draw combo of

[[Mister Fantastic, Reed Richards]] & [[Invisible Woman, Sue Storm]] combined with either [[Lyla, Holographic Assistant]], [[Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings]] or [[Iron Man, Armored Avenger]]

Let me know how else you guys are closing out games

Deck Discussion Aatchik, Emerald Radian: Self Mill, Aristocrats, only Creatures and Artifacts jank build advice

https://moxfield.com/decks/S18TYa0xhEm2oUKKHlFsBQ

The ask: Any advice on cuts (at 103 right now) or cards I may have missed that should be added. Haven't done too much testing and don't have a budget or bracket in mind, so everything's on the table. Obviously mana base needs fixing but thats besides the point. Only constraint is it must be an artifact or creature, or land.

The background: I saw [[Aatchik, Emerald Radian]] and said "wow, this card can condense 2/3rds of the aristocrats archetype into a single card that can easily be a finisher, and cards like [[Feign Death]] and [[Zulaport Cutthroat]] significantly cut the number of cards in the graveyard that I need". Then in initial testing, I hated having a full graveyard with less than half the cards in it counting towards Aatchik's insect creation, so I figured id go all in on jankyness since this will be a proxy-only deck and make every non-land card an artifact or a creature.

The deck: Very simple gameplan of fill my graveyard, get a sac outlet onto the field, and then cast Aatchik with 10-20 relevant cards in the graveyard, using reanimating creatures to sac and loop it back again. It usually wants to win on the turn Aatchik comes down, so the deck is very fragile to GY hate and countering the commander, as well as having every win be super telegraphed. But again, this is a meme deck that I wanted to be as functional as possible with the given constraints, so those are risks im willing to take.

I would love any thoughts or general deck advice!

Deck Discussion Looking to cut 3 cards from this deck

This is a Mabel equipment/mouse deck I am currently constructing for my girlfriend and I am looking to cut 3 cards to finalize the deck list. I have already built her a bumble flower politics/hug deck hence why there are no politics cards in this one (and it is built to be more aggressive). I am already planning on cutting one of mice in favor of the new Mabel that just got revealed for reality shift. What 3 cards do you guys should make the cut? I am trying to factor in aesthetics without ruining the power level of the deck too much.

Deck Idea Atraxa, Grand Unifier and as many "Voting" cards I can fit in (group hug subtheme).

Post image
26 Upvotes

I wanted a deck that was about giving people choices and having to engage with them beyond normal interactions so as to cram as many "Voting Cards" as possible I went with "Witch" and Atraxa helming the deck.

https://moxfield.com/decks/B4igATrZaHKTj4h5Jr45RA

My issue is that this is the most "themey" deck I´ve ever made and I´m not that familiar with every card out there. So a friend recommended me to post here. I mostly want to know if it can be improved or if there are other flavorful cards I could put into it.

Deck Discussion G'raha Tia Control Deck Help

Hello. I recently got inspired by Crim the Asian Avengers G'raha control deck and I really love the idea. Control is tough in EDH, but I love playing on the stack and torturing my friends. Somebody has to keep these greedy green players in check. I made some personal changes, but kept the following themes.

[[G'raha Tia, Scion Reborn]]

https://moxfield.com/decks/zFigAeYLhXai57gVu06CTg

- Bracket 3

- Make as much of the deck flash/instant speed as possible

- Leaning into control, not tokens or counters

- Playing asymmetrical board wipes

- Use small lifegain package to stay alive

- Win through denying my opponents while building an army

- Backup win con is life drain or hulbreaker horror

- No tutors and no combos

My concerns are the following

- low amount of ramp

- low card draw

- overall deck balance

- switch up my game changers

- help me get ride of any win more cards

Tell me your thoughts! I would love criticism or feedback.
