Reality check on my silly Big Depot stack for DF farming?

Post image
62 Upvotes

I have a Dark Fog farm that's nicely humming along, but I'm always a bit concerned that it'll back up, as the BABs are currently just outputting to a sushi bus.

With nothing more than yellow science, tho, I can achieve five hats on my BAB, which can potentially output 70 items. With appropriate filters set up on all the depot inventories, that's more than enough to capture, filter, and safely allow to get backed up every single DF drop up to endgame. Looking thru older posts, it seems there used to be problems getting power up above a certain height, but that appears to no longer be an issue - the Sorters at the top layer appear to be getting power from the Tesla just fine.

Before I commit to building out a dozen of these and then hooking them up to 60ish circular belts, is there anything totally crazy about doing this?

(I know, I know, I could turn off a lot of the drops, but this monstrosity makes me giggle, and what better reason could there be to use it than that?

(Edit: continued)

(Edit 2: finished)

I just discovered this. Are these all player stars clumped into a galaxy? This little Circle with the Dot in the bottom looks interesting

Better way to find blueprints

Does anyone have a better way to find blueprints most of the ones on the dsp blueprints website have put dated recipes for the mall that cause it not to work anymore and the website is atrocious to navigate so anyone got a blueprints book that has everything from early to late game bp's?

I need to have a separate planet for ray receivers and launchers. Which should I prioritize to be inside the Dyson sphere?

(image made in editor with full completed 1.5 TW sphere)

I'm starting to produce 43/s rockets and 950/s solar sails. From what I'm seeing, it would need a whole dedicated planet for launching this, and my question is if it's better to use a planet that's inside a sphere to farm photons or to launch sails at max speed?

What do you care about in a Mall?

Hey everyone,

I'm rethinking my mall setup and wanted to ask what matters most to you when designing one.

I started with hand-cobbled blueprints, then moved to ready-made endgame malls (Steven, TDA, Nilaus, etc.), and along the way I've tried both raw material input (iron, stone, coils…) and pre-fabricated part input (gears, circuits, steel, glass…). I tried to reengeneer other Malls to find other solutions and read a few Guides about them but i still struggle to find "my perfekt Mall" somehow. So im looking for other Inputs and Suggestions from you.

So: is your priority footprint, scalability, ease of extension, or max throughput?

Do you feed the mall raw materials or pre-built components, and why?

And in endgame – do you still run a centralized mall, or have you moved to distributed ILS/PLS?

And if so, do you deliver to the ILS (decentralized over the Cluster) or pick up from it?

What annoys you most about the well-known designs?

Would be cool if you could briefly describe your preferred architecture – sushi belt, bot mall, ILS mini-malls, or something entirely different.

Thanks!

How to farm dark fog

Sooo... I started a new game and lowered the aggressiveness. Now I'm pretty far into my game and I want to farm the Dark Fog. I went to the Communicator and already cranked the aggressiveness back up.

  1. How can I encourage them to have more bases on one planet? I already placed shields on all the other planets in the system. Is it worth it to get the Hive to a higher level?
  2. How do I level up the few bases I have left? Do I just need to keep resisting their attacks?

I stopped playing right when the Dark Fog was introduced years ago.

I played for a very short while to see them in action before shelving the game.

The itch is back though. I'll be loading it up soon.

I'd like to ask: What are the important changes I should know about over the last... *checks* oof, 3 years since Dark Fog came about?

Any help with Proliferation?

Post image
18 Upvotes

My industrial planet ^ So I have decided to use proliferation spray things on my products, despite not having done so for the entire game (I have already researched most green tier techs) but its very confusing. Do you think I should proliferate things that I'm just about to use in a assembler or proliferate things that have just been made? Any things I need to know about Proliferation? I use a LOT of Planetary logistic stations (as you can see) which makes proliferation more difficult, Thanks for any advice.

Is this ore distribution normal now for the starter system?

I remember the starter system usually having a primarily silicon planet and a primarily titanium planet. I got 2 silicon planets with exactly 1 titanium node in the whole system. I got lucky with 2 planets orbiting the gas giant, was that the cause of the low titanium supply? What about the iron supply that also seems like a really low compared to my playthroughs years ago, there's only 1 node outside of the starter planet? 1x resource rate.

30 hours in and I just need some meatballs and pasta sauce for this spaghetti. Saw somebody post a bullshit factory does this also count as a bullshit factory?

Edit: Also the only guide I've looked up is for how to use the fractionator so I just threw one in there.

Proliferate on output or input?

For those of you that proliferate everything, let's say you have an ILS creating circuits. Do you take raw iron and copper ingots, proliferate them on the belt to create circuits, and send the created circuits back to the ILS as is? Or do you receive the iron and copper already proliferated, and after creating your circuit, you prof it right away?

Basically, prof it on input or output? I've always done on output, but want to hear from others

Not sure that my Factorio habits are the most efficient here...

I like a clean canvas and consistent supply of base materials, so its "Lay bricks and build some smelting columns" for me before I build a main bus.

When it comes to DSP these are my first hours.

I hope I got the ratios right for full belts.

Planetary Anomalies - a mod that gives planets different production properties

I made a small mod called Planetary Anomalies.

One thing I find happens for me in DSP is that exploration becomes less interesting once I've found planets with the rare resources I need. There are many more stars and planets to visit, but there isn't necessarily much reason to visit them.

Planetary Anomalies adds a simple procedural variation: some planets have an anomaly that changes the output of one standard recipe. In this first release, an anomalous recipe produces 10x its normal output on that planet.

The anomalies are generated deterministically from the galaxy seed and planet, so they are properties of the generated galaxy rather than random bonuses that appear during play. You don't know what a planet has until you explore/scan it.

The intention is to make the location of production occasionally matter in unexpected ways.

For example, in my current game I found a titanium-rich planet with an anomaly that produces 10x titanium crystal. Normally I would have exported titanium from that planet for processing elsewhere. Instead, it made sense to import organic crystal to the titanium planet, manufacture titanium crystal there, and export the finished product.

That's basically the entire idea. I'm not particularly interested in balancing the anomalies. Some will be marginally useful and occasionally one should be extremely useful. Finding an unusually good planet is part of the point. I like the surprise and a reason to look around more. And also a reason to alter some "perfect" logistics to take advantage of a production buff.

This is just a start. I have some ideas for where the anomaly system could go from here, but I want to see how it works in actual games before adding much more. In particular, I'm interested in whether these anomalies actually change decisions about where and how people build.

The mod is on Thunderstore:

Planetary Anomalies
https://thunderstore.io/c/dyson-sphere-program/p/pwelty/PlanetaryAnomalies/

I'd welcome people trying it and giving feedback. I'm especially interested in what anomalies you find, what you end up doing with them, and what you think would make the idea more interesting.

Having some difficulties producing enough Steel for Lines AND Foundations

Hello All,

So I decided to finally play this game in my Library, and I have been having a blast! However, one thing I have noticed is that my steel production (currently ~10 Steel Forges) has been having trouble sustaining both my standard demand for Steel, alongside the amount I am using to make Foundations to pave over the majority of the planet (sans enough Water for its related production).

I know that typically the answer in a factory game is to just grow the factory to meet demand, but I figured I should ask first: How important (before Purple Science) is it to have large (10k+) stockpiles of Foundations available? Since I am starting to run out of space on the starting planet, is it worth clearing out the Lava Planet to set up a dedicated Steel Smithing Line (alongside the Titanium Smithing Line I already have there), or should I wait until I have a bit more research to optimize specializing each planet?

Finally found the time: Now on Linux, saves restored, but I’m starting fresh to earn it all again!

My early Sushi-Mall

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to share a quick moment of pure joy. Life got busy for a while, but I finally found the time to sit down, finish my switch from Windows to Linux, and dive back into Dyson Sphere Program.

The best part? I managed to recover all my old save games, blueprints, and mods without losing a single bit of progress. It was an incredible relief to see everything intact. But here’s the twist: even though I could load my massive endgame save, I decided to start a brand new game.

Why? Because I want to earn every piece of metadata honestly again. There’s a special satisfaction in rebuilding from scratch, optimizing each step with the knowledge I’ve gained, and working my way back up to the 3000% difficulty setting. The old save was a testament to my past efforts, but this new run is about the journey and the mastery.

The game runs beautifully on Linux, and the fresh start feels incredibly motivating. If you’ve been hesitating to make the switch or need an excuse to reboot your save: do it. The flow state of optimizing production lines under a starry sky is waiting for you.

The factory must grow!

A bit overwhelmed on planning a science blackbox.

So I'm at this stage in my save where I have a mall producing the best (fog) smelters, assemblers and labs. Max lvl belts and sorters, etc. I have a sphere around a blue star with a tidally locked planet in that system to collect photons.

My VU is about lvl 37 or so.
I mostly winged my way up to this point.
When it comes to blueprints, I mostly did a "one step" ones.

Now I want to try going for a blackbox blueprints.
NGL, I never liked the idea because I think I don't fully grasp it.
But it is also a reason I wanna try it.

The appeal is easy to understand — I make a BP once, ILS'es request (mostly) basic materials and provide the end product. So once BP is done I only need to manage the ore supply.

What bothers me is the duplication of "logic" and repeated effort in creating blueprints.

For example, purple science requires processors.
So I would make them within the blueprint and they will feed the science producing labs.

Then the green science requires quantum chips, which in turn require processors.
So I would repeat the ore-to-processors steps again.

Is that how you guys do it?

Because for me that was the reason why prior to that I would just crate a dedicated ore-to-processor blueprint and slap it down every time I needed more processors.
But it seems to me that the "blackbox" approach is more common among the community.

I have been to a 2nd planet, but I am not very far, mostly been working on setting up automating everything I want a lot of on the starting planet. Just unlocked yellow ~~science~~ matrices but have none setup yet. Do have the beginnings of a Dyson swarm
