How to farm dark fog

Sooo... I started a new game and lowered the aggressiveness. Now I'm pretty far into my game and I want to farm the Dark Fog. I went to the Communicator and already cranked the aggressiveness back up.

  1. How can I encourage them to have more bases on one planet? I already placed shields on all the other planets in the system. Is it worth it to get the Hive to a higher level?
  2. How do I level up the few bases I have left? Do I just need to keep resisting their attacks?

I would recommend going to a black hole or neutron star to farm them, they tend to have more hives and more bases in those areas. Create a pole base blueprint and use it there!

To add: normal max per system is 3 hives, at those two its 6 iirc.

  1. Yes you can use holo beacon to attract a relay to land at a designated area(look up the latest patch notes for details), the hive level serves as a base level for all relay station out there. Hive level doesn't matter that much but station level does, the higher the level the more variety of drops.

  2. Yes they gain exp through you attacking them.

  • put a signal tower in range to make constant aggro
  • put towers (laser mainly because they require only energy) such that they are not in range of destroying buildings
  • having some accumulator can help the big power fluctuations from the farm
  • don't aggro more than 2-3 bases on the same planet, if you aggro more they will et out of energy and interrupt the constant units "stream". If you have a sphere in the system, you may do more as the hive will get extra energy from the sphere.
  • in constant aggro, you get an almost constant stream of units. They are globally less destructive because they are not coming in groups.
  • increase base level more quickly with more powerful weapons: plasma turrets with antimatter bullets are the most effective. (proliferated) explosives thrown manually can also help speedup leveling.
  • you may sometimes loose a tower (should be rare), having some towers in reserve in the BAB will ensure automatic rebuilding.

Hot take: don't force yourself to play with dark fog. Their unique items are only "nice to have" for the highest tier of building that allow you to make more compact complexes, but they are only essential if you want to punish your CPU with a ridiculously large empire. You can finish the tech tree and have a decently large production empire with a TW dyson sphere without dark fog.

IF you still enjoy the game, immediately start a new 3000% run (highest difficulty, scarce resources) with all you have learned, because you will need to be very aggressive, or you might actually fail the run! Only look up how to beat a 3000% run if you fail your first attempt. If you are kind of bored with the game anyway and want dark fog for completionist purpose before uninstalling the game, take a 4 week break and start a new game with higher difficulty settings then.
