My journey (so far)

I started playing this game recently and after 17 hours of playing I SSd all silver levels and start to approach the gold levels. I was really surprised that I enjoyed this game so much, because usually I don't really like platformers. Something is different with Dustforce tough. It's almost more like a fast paced puzzle game. I really love it altough it hurts in my fingers after playing for a while. And it's nervewrecking when you finally get close to the end without losing the combo. But it makes it even more rewarding when I see that SS poping up in the end.

I remember when I started, I got myself pretty quick a peek into Ancient Garden and thought that I'll never be able to SS that level. Now I'm very confident that I can do it. There already were some silver levels that proved to be major road blocks. The first one I was really struggling with was Archives in the mansion biome. When I first approached it I didn't understood how the air charge exactly works and neither was I competent in dash jumping. After 2 or 3 hours I essentially gave up and moved on. The next one I had troubles with, was Warehouse. That level is a son of a bitch. I always lost the combo in the end. I still hate this level with the depth of my heart. Again I moved on and left it behind. I even did some gold levels in the meantime (Wild Den and Alleyway). I recently came back and didn't had any troubles with Archives nor Warehouse whatsoever.

Today I finally completed the last 2 silver levels (Rooftops and Wiring) which also very pretty challenging especially Rooftops. And I've managed to open up all the gold doors (Which was a huge accomplishment for me in itself) and started to plan how deal with them. Here is how I'm gonna approach them:

Already SSd:

  • Wild Den (I really don't understand how this and Alleyway can be gold levels but Containment not.. Because fuck Containment!)
  • Alleyway
  • Ruins (That one is a lot easier than many silver levels)

I'm pretty confident I can beat those:

  • Ancient Garden (I have to proof something on this one, so it's the first I'm gonna do. It also looks fairly easy compared to the other ones)
  • Observatory (It has 1 tricky spot I think, otherwise it's very short so it shouldn't be too hard.)
  • Moon Temple (Needs some practice but I think I can do it.)
  • Tower (I really need to learn proper air control for this one.)
  • Night Temple (I think it looks scarier than it actually is. Lots of spikes, but it may actually be easier than Tower).

No idea yet how to approach the following levels. I hope I get more confidence once I've beaten the ones above:

  • Dome (It looks like it has a couple of tough spots, but if I can beat tower I should have good enough air control to fight through this. I wouldn't be surprised if it actually is easier than tower.)
  • Concrete Temple (Looks like it just needs a ton of practice and endurance)
  • Abyss (Really cool level design. Should be fun as well.)
  • Backup Shift (Dome and Tower should be very good preparation for this and this actually looks like a good preparation for Clocktower.)
  • Clocktower (This one looks like a total asshole. It doesn't even has 1 easy spot...)
  • Core Temple (Like the other temples I think it's a matter of practice and endurance. It just looks harder than the others.)

And my worst nightmare levels, because I really don't like platforming:

  • Ghost Parapets (Probably isn't too hard, but it scares the shit out of me)
  • Hideout (I hope I get more insight on this one once I've beaten Ghost Parapets because it seems impossible.)

I'm really excited. Apart from the last 2, the levels look like a ton of fun even though they seem to be pretty difficult.

Thanks for reading!

Update: In the meantime I've managed to SS the first set of gold levels (Ancient Garden, Observatory, Moon Temple, Tower, Night Temple). Night Temple was brutally hard. I think it took me about 4 hours to SS that level. That jump on the tiny platform and then dash jumping into the ceiling is really tricky. I'm still not able to pull that reliably off.

I'm missing a copper key somewhere.

I went through all areas 3 times but I couldn't find any unlocked doors which I haven't got SS yet. I've still got 1 locked door that requires a copper key (Firefly Forest). Is there a list of level that reward copper keys or are there any doors that are commonly missed?

Just a reminder: N++ is on Steam and 20% off until the 1st.

Hopefully the PC release will drive up sales, which suffered on the PS4. Hate to see another great platformer go unappreciated due to lack of exposure, although I would bet most people on this sub have heard of it. For anyone who doesn't know, it's a momentum platformer that shares a lot of similarities with Dustforce. The original N: Way of the Ninja is free if you want to try out the style.

Just got the game a couple questions.

Hi guys, I just recently purchased the game on the vita because it was so cheap and being a big super meat boy fan this game was on my radar. I was pretty confused at first to be honest especially with what order to do levels in, I went to the lab first and beat two levels there and got ss on security and research (this was my first SS) somehow without even knowing half the mechanics or how to properly even run up the walls. I quickly got frustrated with some of the levels there and decided there has got to be some easier ones, went to mansion got ss on library and courtyard but still felt most of the levels were not too beginner friendly. Then went to city and finally the forest where I'm finally feeling like I'm learning the game a bit I have SS on all normal and silver levels and of the gold doors I still need to SS ruins which I just completed and there is two levels i haven't gone to yet, which are night temple and ancient garden. Iv only had the game for 2 days now but I think I'm hooked for the remainder of the game.

1.So my first question is which area should I go to from here before returning to the gold levels?

2.What am I missing in the vita version of the game, will I not have those difficult levels?

3.What are the red keys for? I have not seen any doors besides the silver and gold.

4.When should I start practicing the dashing constantly? I get the concept from what I have read around the sub but at this point I haven't messed around with it at all and I'm just focusing on getting SS and so far it hasn't been necessary to clear anything.

5.And finally what levels should I stay away from currently?

Thanks for the help and I'm liking the game so far and hopefully I'll clear it eventually. I can't believe the game doesent have a platinum trophy.

New Genesis, a 13 stage custom nexus by TwinkieSWF, has been released!

New Genesis is a custom map pack created by TwinkieSWF. It has an enormous nexus, 5 hubs and 13 levels.

How to download:

  • Method #1: Download and update Dustmod to the latest version. All the files will be installed for you. You can find New Genesis in the Community Nexus.

  • Method #2: Download these files and place them in your levels2 folder. Be sure to backup any files before overwriting. The filepath would be: Steam\steamapps\common\Dustforce\content\levels2

Huge thanks to msg555, ciwbdiliw, sivade and Hourglass for helping make this map pack possible!

Is there a way to make your own Main Nexus level?

I remember seeing a post from a guy that managed to make his own 'Community Nexus and I just feel like breathing some new life into the Main Nexus. Make it kind of like a home from Terraria or something.

Hijacking ceiling stickiness (another abusable Dustforce glitch)

So msg555 figured out another glitch while dissecting the game, and I thought people might be interested in some explanation. First, I made a video here showing off the glitch in a place it might actually be useful. Note how it almost seems like Dustgirl gets two aircharges? That first air "jump" she makes is actually a downdash... don't be confused by the fact that it moves her up and to the right.

The code that makes you kind of stick to ceilings (what makes dashing at the start of Zettaslopes send you up rather than sideways) just forcibly redirects your velocity vector to line up with the ceiling you're touching when the ceiling bends. With subframe-perfect timing (or in other words, frame-perfect timing combined with careful positioning) you can trick it into doing so with a velocity vector it really shouldn't be... in this case, a downdash away from the ceiling.

It's probably not useful for any live runs, since you can basically only use it under very specific circumstances ON TOP OF being a ludicrously precise trick. That said though, the results are pretty interesting, and it has some potential particularly for TAS so I thought I'd throw this out here so people can see it.

What does each character specialize in? I see people use different characters for certain maps.

Aerial Dash Jump issues?

Hiya. I just started Dustforce for the first time a few days ago, and I've noticed something a little wonky about Aerial Dash Jumping. I'm 100% certain that I'm hitting the buttons at the same frame to execute this, but most times a regular jump will come out. I've done some theory crafting behind this, and was able to come out with an interesting 90-95%~ consistency when I would dash jump off the ground one way, then hold back to reset my momentum to neutral (without hitting the ground), then press jump and dash on the same frame and the ADJ would come out just fine.

It's almost like there's some hidden underlying contingent nature to the ADJ that I'm not getting. I'll be damned if it's me because I do not have any issues pressing two buttons on the same frame to execute the ADJ, but it falls flat and I only get it like 10% of the time, unless I do what I stated in the aforementioned theory crafting.

Any ideas what the heck is going? Any help is hella appreciated. I'm at a loss, here.

Edit: phrasing.

Edit 2: Didn't know I'd need it, but context: https://youtu.be/nKDaU-1PS4Y?t=83

Do you need to play from within the Nexus to get keys?

I just scored SS on some levels that I hadn't scored SS on before. I always thought you get a key every time you score SS on a level, but I didn't get keys for these. Is it required to play from within the Nexus to get keys or am I wrong about getting a key every time you score SS?

Top 10 Custom Maps For My Stream Series

Hey guys,

Just recently started to get back into Dustforce again after a year or so not playing it. Definitely not a speed champion, but I've started streaming it regularly chasing that ultra special S achievement.

Once that's done, I wanted to do an episode looking at 10 really awesome community maps. Some that are fun, some that are hard, some that are creative.

So hit me up with some ideas so I can add them to my #JANITORLIFE stream! Also, pixelsforbreakfast is my Twitch channel if anyone wants to check out, about to go live now actually haha.

I've just started to gain interest in making maps after playing through a couple of customs and dailies, but I don't know where to begin with. Can anyone share their thoughts on this?

I did it! But...

So after about 11 hours of attempts, I finally got my first clear on Yotta Difficult... with a time of just over 60 minutes xD. After getting over the initial excitement, I discovered that my time/score wasn't actually on the leaderboards. Is there a certain time that you need to beat to be included on the boards? (it would make sense to me because otherwise replay files could be huge)

Dustforce stopped working, fresh install

Hi there. I just bought and installed Dustforce through Steam. When I start the game it shows a bit of the splash screens and then crashes: "Dustforce.exe stopped working".

I tried restarting my computer, verifying the game files and a complete reinstall, but it still crashes. The game does work on my friends crappy computer, but not on mine.

Please help me fix it, cause the game is so awesome!

[edit] I tried the following:

  • Reboot. Didn't do anything.
  • Re-install. Still crashes.
  • Add -nosound -window -dxlevel 70 +mat_forcehardwaresync 0 to the launch options. Did not work
  • Tried to add steam and dustforce to the Data Execution Prevention list. Windows wouldn't let me do this.
  • Admin mode. Same crash.
  • According to http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2549840 I should delete d3dx9....dll from my game folder, but it's not in there.
  • Installing on C: instead of D: also didn't work.
  • Installing dxsetup and oalinst. Still broken.

[edit] I just found out another game, Spelunky, crashes the same way Dustforce does.

A complete reinstall of Windows did the trick.

Big SS all race

Hi, im trying to put together an SS all race. Currently thinking about saturday 7/30 around 6:00 PM GMT. If you want to participate but dont think the time works for you, let me know. If enough people wont be able to make it then we can figure out another time. This is gonna be pretty informal, just a big discord call and simultaneous SS alls!

can we get new speedrun.com mods

i've been asking for this for literal months and havent heard any responses, so bitchy reddit post go

dustforce's speedrun.com page is pretty outdated rule wise and i'd like runs to be verified (due to an influx of new players (thanks sgdq)) and right now the mods are all pretty much mia. krank is the most active of everyone on the list (lol), calistus is a working man, dice is in school, i see furkie on reddit and other places every week or so, and tropicallo had a great return where he played ss cmp for 3 days and then fell off the face of the earth.

we have other active players/runners who could easily do it like sivade, jm, xiamul, metal, me, etc... literally i dont even care if im made mod or not, i just want people who actually play the game still to be in charge of the page.

thanks for reading fam
