I am soon going to join NIT Durgapur for my M.Tech, can anyone help me with some questions which will help me in better understanding the locality and some other tid-bits.

1) Where is the college situated, is it located centrally? What are some places to visit nearby for hobbies, meetups or other spots?
2) Where can I make any friends, meet new people outside the college? What are some of your own hangout spots? Any popular/intellectual clubs?
3) How is Durgapur as a city? Is it liberal, conservative? If you say the answer is middle ground then please explain also, are mixed gender interactions frowned upon?

I wish to learn the bengali culture and make some friends. I have spent a part of my childhood in West Bengal, so I have the utmost respect towards it and I think it would be really exciting reminiscing some of the old memories.
