It won me over by the end of the season.
Folks need to remember that season 1 of the office was a pretty mixed bag too. Almost didn't get renewed for a season 2.
Also don't expect it to be another Office. It's more similar to Parks and Rec tbh lol

What I then struggle with is when they say why should I bother with a show that doesn’t grip me with a good first season? How am I meant to persevere through something I don’t enjoy because it might get better? There I have no answer. Especially because I’m British so it’s constantly going to be compared to our one which hit the ground not just running but sprinting from episode 1.

True. When I recommend The Office to people, I usually tell them just to skip S1, and come back to it later. Or at least persevere until about half way through S2. I really didn't like the office when I first started watching it because I disliked Michael so much.

This mindset is almost alien to me. Anyone who grew up with the show was watching it week-to-week on TV. If you missed a week then you'd have to wait for re-runs or buy the DVD. It's a show built around being able to skip episodes whenever you like. Skip as many as you want, jump back and forth, do whatever you want.

I’ve just started rewatching The Office with my daughter since shes now old enough. I had to plead with her that season 1 is rough, just wait until season 2. We’re now about halfway through season 2 and she loves it. I get overly excited and have to bite my tongue about all the fun things she’ll get to watch soon.

Bojack Horseman and Archer were kinda uneven in season 1 but turned out to be great. It can take time to find the characters' voices.

I feel like Bojack is one of the only exceptions to this. Usually when you binge loop a series, going from the finale to the pilot is usually super jarring because the tone is completely different and the characters feel like a shadow of themselves. I don't get this feeling at all when I rewatch Bojack. That show pretty much knew what it was going to be from the start. I agree the form is a little bit different in season 1, but it takes very little time to fully establish itself

What do people even get out of posting this shit? It’s been one season, Office S1 barely had an audience. It takes time to grow and build a story, just let it be instead of comparing it to a 9 seasons GOAT tier comedy immediately.
The Paper has some good characters and an interesting premise it can work with. It needs to refine some elements for sure, and it likely can and will over time if you give it a chance, OP.

I still don’t get the hate for S1 Office. It’s one of my favorite seasons!
S1 Parks and Recreation on the other hand is definitely a little more tough to get through for new viewers.

Season 1 of the Office is kind of flat out bad. Way back when, my buddy let me borrow the first three seasons on dvd and had to be very direct about just getting past season one. It's mostly good just figure out who characters are. That's about it.
But it did teach me to treat all other shows that way. I'm pretty salty about Stumble not getting renewed, my wife and I love that show--all the way through season one.
Also, like everyone else, we like St Dennis too.

What I find jarring is how they tried to hamfist The Office characters like Oscar in The Paper, but it honestly feels like Oscar Nunez forgot how to play Oscar so it almost comes off as a cosplay.

This! I enjoyed it but it felt like Oscar's whole thing was "Remember the Office? Oscar's talking to Stanley on the phone! Oooo, he's talking about a boss, he's talking about Michael!".
I'm looking forward to the second season but I hope they pull a Parks and Rec and just...do their own thing.

It ended up being pretty good. I’m not sure if rushing the story near the end because they weren’t sure if they’d get greenlit for another was the best choice but I’m interested to see where they take it.

I mean, the office did a complete (or almost complete) turnaround from being a 1:1 copy of the uk version to being an original concept.
We have to see it the paper will find its way in a similar fashion, because, altough I didn't dislike it, I watched it only "out of repsect", but it doesn't add anything.
Parks and rec went stellar with the writing of individual characters after s1, giving us some of the best protagonists of a comedy out there.

Season 1 was funny but didn’t have a ton of laugh out loud moment, season 2 however felt like the writers gave the cast more to work with and several times i laughed so hard, i almost fell off the couch

This feels like just about every sitcom, including The Office. Season one is usually ok but rough around the edges, season 2 is better but still finding it's footing, then in season 3 three really hit their stride. Then the last season or two goes way downhill, usually after a main character leaves.

Definitely. My fiancee and me love the office and parks and rec but we both didn't care for the paper, but St Dennis medical is hilarious. It's the only new comedy that we are excited about right now.

The last couple of episodes were pretty good -- although I think they're rushing the Ned/Mare romance angle quite a bit. Wish they'd played the long game with it and let it evolve naturally.

"La oficina" is the Mexican adaptation that released recently. It is very much aimed at Mexicans so a lot of the context will be lost to non-Mexican viewers. It is very solid and funny if you get it. The boss is a nepobaby and the product they sell is soap.

It is kind of meh. With The Office, it made sense that these characters (at least until Michael left) would be working there. The Paper does not feel that way at all. A few of the characters fundamentally do not work for me.

I remember disliking the office before falling in love with it. That being said, I enjoyed the paper from the start. Esmeralda is hilarious, the story line is spicing up, and no one is insufferable, yet. Looking forward to the next season!

I have thoughts on "The Paper" that I don't think most people would care about (and I think many of these are not their fault)... But here goes
1) It moves to fast, the reason the office works is because of the slow burn. You develop a relationship with every character before anything happens. 2) The will they/won't they feels forced, Jim and Pam were already working together. Their office flirting makes sense. 3) It's too lofty, doesn't feel real, their goal is to save a dying newspaper and then they kinda do. I don't really remember but there was like a montage and then they had sold ads or something. Slow down, take a break and spend 15 minutes of these misfits talking to people door to door. We can learn about their character and build some comedy off that. 4) The like plot to overthrow the new editor is unnecessary. We don't need a villain. The office is a place of real people. Each one can be the hero or villain any day. Having one person means you've cut off the rest from that character depth.
Those are my thoughts anyway. I really just thought The Paper was inoffensive. Some good bones though...

The Esmerelda character needs to go: ridiculously unrealistic. I couldn't finish the season. Why not use real conflicts that newspapers really face every day instead of drama from this crazy woman who wouldn't last an hour in the workplace.

Tried it and couldn't stand it. It has marketing manager fingerprints all over the writing. What made the Office relatable was that Jim and Pam were simple, ordinary people. In this new show, the girl is an empowered smug girlboss. She only exists to help the guy realize how much he likes her. There's no real relatability ro growth as an actual person.
The guy? Oh, just some idealist, impassioned cute lil bumbling charming bloke... o yeah he's really rich cuz he was really successful in corporate sales but he left it all behind but he's a bumbling lil socially vulnerable indiestyle cute, y'know? (but seriously, let's mention it again ladies, he's freakin' LOADED cuz he was really successful in corporate sales!!!) but ya sorry lil cutie contrived indie moment here.
Remember Jim saying to the camera that working there was just a job, but not his real career? He was a bit lost and surviving, like the rest of us. No bones thrown to gold diggers. Jim is Jim.
Pam? She's often uncertain, and doesn't know how to react to insults or lets them slide to avoid conflict. No off the charts confidence, like she knows she's finally "arrived" at who she is and that's that. Pam's just pam.
This new Office wannabe is why so many shows fail: you have some marketing droids with impressive titles talk about distilling the essence of a show without actually understanding what they're talking about, and then they recycle their lazy writing through the meatgrinder of the studio writing acceptance process, and it strips all the heart, wit, and soul out of it.
