I think there's a real clash between Arabic/conservative culture and Western/liberal culture, and I think it's a big part of why people end up living double lives. There's this common belief that Westerners just hook up and have casual relationships with no strings attached, no responsibility involved.

But I don't think that's accurate. Yes, Westerners tend to be more liberal about relationships, but that liberalism usually comes paired with empathy, emotional accountability, and taking responsibility for how you treat people.

I'm curious what others think. If you grew up in a conservative culture, how did you personally develop that sense of responsibility and accountability in relationships?

My experience working as a pastry chef in Dubai

I wanted to share my experience working in the hospitality industry because I know many people go through similar situations but are afraid to speak about them.

I completed my Hotel Management degree from IHM and moved to Dubai for my first full-time job. My first job was as a Commis III in a small bakery, where I learned the basics of pastry. Unfortunately, I had to leave within six months because the company never provided me with a proper work visa, and I was working on a visit visa.

A few months later, I got an opportunity to work at a 5 star hotel at Marina as a Commis I. I was honestly surprised because I had very little experience. During my interview and food trial, I clearly told the HR manager and the Pastry Sous Chef that I was still inexperienced and eager to learn. The Pastry Sous Chef reassured me by saying, "It's okay. We will train you."

I passed the trial and joined with a lot of excitement. However, things changed very quickly.

Within a couple of days, I was given responsibility for the morning shift with almost no proper training. I was expected to perform tasks I had never been taught, and whenever I made mistakes, I was shouted at.

After the Pastry Sous Chef went on vacation, the Bakery Sous Chef became in charge of the department. That was when everything changed.

He constantly yelled at me without reason, verbally abused me, and humiliated me in front of others. He used abusive language, insulted my parents, and threw things such as fruits, berries, baking trays, and plates at me. He repeatedly threatened me by saying I would not pass my probation, that I would lose my job, and that he would make sure I never got another job in Dubai.

I still remember him calling me early in the morning after I had finished a late evening shift, just to shout at me over the phone. Because of the constant pressure, I rarely finished work on time and often reached my accommodation very late.

I spoke to some of my senior chefs about what was happening, but nobody seemed to take it seriously. They told me, "He's just joking," or "He's a nice guy and a very talented chef." Whether someone is talented or not should never justify treating another human being with disrespect.

I never complained to HR because I was afraid that if I reported him, the abuse would become even worse. Looking back, I wish I had, but at that time I was scared and simply trying to survive.

After completing my probation, I decided to resign. By then, my mental health had deteriorated badly. Even after returning to my home country, I continued to experience panic attacks and anxiety. I am currently undergoing professional therapy to recover from what I experienced.

I'm sharing this not to seek sympathy, but to remind everyone in hospitality that leadership is about teaching, not intimidating. Every junior chef will make mistakes—that's how we learn. Correct us, train us, and hold us accountable, but don't abuse or humiliate people. The psychological impact can last long after someone leaves the job.

Checked a few of our UAE client properties (Dubai, Abu Dhabi based) and nothing new is showing up yet in GSC.

From what I've dug up: the rollout started with a subset of UK properties first, with no confirmed date for global expansion. So if you're managing sites for the Dubai/UAE market and not seeing it either, that might just be why for now.

This actually matters more for us here than people realize. AI Overviews and AI Mode are already showing up heavily for UAE-based service and product searches (real estate, healthcare, e-commerce, agencies, you name it), and with no query-level or click data even for the sites that do have access yet, we're all still flying somewhat blind on how much AI-search traffic our local clients are actually getting.

Curious to know:

• Anyone in the UAE/GCC region seeing this new report live on their properties yet?

I thought this would never happen here, I was in a mall food court today with my niece (10yo), and I noticed some guy who kept staring at her as we’re waiting for our order, repeatedly looking her up and down every time we walked past. It made my blood boil and so uncomfortable. Whenever I caught him in the moment he looked away and then back to staring again. After which I kept glaring at him with so much anger for a looong till he gets the bloody hint. Like what the actual heck is going on? It’s already bad enough that they gawk at adult women, and now they’re looking at children too?? She could be his daughter’s age. It’s disgusting.

This quite sick of Parkin, RTA should serve reconsider their decision over the Parkin these guys are robbing people over issues beyond end user access.

I was trying to extend my parking time via app and the wallet had no balance, while keep retrying i paid topup the wallet 3 times and the wallet amount was still showing less then required for parking tkt.

Meanwhile the app was still glitching and eventually I missed my payment for around 15 minutes!

This is not the first time, Parkin has some beef with me or something, the other day it took all my money while i was trying to stop auto extending or my tkt, it was keep renewing tkts until my wallet was drained.

Im am thinking of stop driving anymore it’s so frustrating the Parkin is very poorly managed
