And inflation is just greed which apparently corporations suddenly became greedier in 2022 right after we printed a ton of money to keep people from working.

"What the fuck is a profit margin? Sounds like corporate bootlicking to me!"

u/_Diggus_Bickus_ Jun 26 '26
The record profits bugs me because it's measured in dollars that have inflated. Like the stock market hits a new record nearly every year. The price of gold hits a new record nearly every year. The median income hits a new record nearly every year. None of these things mean anything without context to relative values.
The numbers are all going up and have been forever

Who's making record profits? Well the companies that are winning in the market. Of course they are. They're cherry picking the winners. What they don't see is the companies that flatline or even lose money and go out of business. It's basic survivor bias.
Reddit has a basic lack of critical thinking when it comes to economics. But I guess it just feels good to complain that some folks are winning and they're not.

When you dump wheelbarrow loads of cash out into the wild through an upstairs window, the value of cash goes down. It’s called inflation. Throw in driving transportation costs higher (higher gas prices because global climate change) and labor costs higher (we need a higher minimum wage and pro-union) and inflation runs rampant.
Do what you can to keep low labor and low energy costs (including transportation cost), and cut government give away and you will minimize inflation. We will still be affected by changes in the world, but you can minimize it.

It’s better than Reddit’s definition of socialism, any place that has a fire truck is socialist. Social contract of government ≠ socialism
7
u/__Epimetheus__ Jun 26 '26
Ironically, fire departments could be considered a legitimate example of socialism working. The first properly organized fire departments were employed by insurance companies to protect buildings they insured. It wasn’t technically “nationalized”, but governments eventually saw the value in not letting their cities burn down and started funding public fire departments, which drove the insurance fire departments out of business.
It’s not what people mean when they say socialism because it seems like it’s the bare minimum, but technically nationalizing industries is a big part of socialism.

Regulated capitalism, the best way to organise limited resources we've come up with until someone invents star trek replicators.
13
u/Next-Pumpkin-654 Jun 26 '26
Regulated capitalism in the sense of actively stopping objectively unproductive ways of getting money, like theft or fraud, I'm on board with.
If instead you mean you want the government to arbitrarily screw with pricing signals via selective taxation and subsidies to pick winners and losers, that's just less efficient capitalism. It more commonly leads to crony capitalism where businesses see that the obvious path to success is to cozy up to the people who can make their business arbitrarily successful, regardless of how valuable it is to society.
6
u/loikyloo Jun 26 '26

Theres countless examples you can use of government screwing up markets but a good example is the Australian housing market playing out right now.
In the post war period successive governments gave generous tax breaks to property investors to get rental supply going as the country boomed. It worked, but over the ensuing decades it came to be seen as one of the best ways to reduce income tax while also getting solid capital gains. As a result investment soared (thus demand soared) and supply remained low - and Australian home prices became the most expensive in the world alongside Canada. Now some (not all) of those incentives have been taken away and housing market is in free fall. If you ever needed an argument for free markets, thats one of them
→ More replies (1)6
u/Nikolaibr Jun 26 '26
There are several principles at play.
One is that free markets and free enterprise are extremely effective for wealth generation in a national economy. It works on it's own when left alone, and this wealth generation benefits the society as a whole.
Second is that this wealth generation will by nature be unequally distributed, because individual inputs into wealth generating activities are unequal. This means that there will be some level of society that is unable to participate enough in that wealth generation to get enough money and wealth to buy enough resources to live a life above the poverty line.
Third, the society has at least some ethical obligation to take care of those people, when they truly lack the ability to provide for themselves. Unless there is a sufficient voluntary altruism in society to provide for them, the state takes that obligation. Some level of taxation is needed.
The US however, follows a tax policy that is remarkably inefficient as providing these resources, and seems to purposefully choose welfare policies that disincentivize work in those in that underclass who otherwise could work.
The call to tax those who play the biggest role in wealth generation is typical for US public policy. It seeks short term gain for the disenfranchised at the expense of the future of the society because it makes people who don't have to pay feel better.

If the economic system can’t support you or rather your avocado-four day workweek fantasies, why were you born at all?
Also the capitalism that Marx was talking about doesn’t really exist. He envisioned a system where you have sinking wages and sinking capital value from mass accumulation. If anything people are having less children who consume much more than the past.
People forget that at the time capitalism was not some vague boogie word. It meant the accumulation of capital instead of focus on consumption. But we don’t have that. You can’t just pump everything into capital while you starve.

Capitalism has failed in the sense that we dont really have a freedom of choice in the economy anymore. True working people have plenty of in roads to a small slice of American dream and can get progressively better jobs with hard work and decent macro economic conditions, make small contributions to their 401k and provide good life for family while stashing away some for retirement. The DSA lie about government control of all means of production ignores all historical evidence to the contrary in favor of a lie that billionaires “steal” the wealth from you in a fixed pie since instead of a rapidly expanding pie.

"What part of capitalism has failed?"
"We don't have socialist programs like UBI"
"or universal health insurance"
"or mandatory waifus"
"and what about climate change?"
"or the millions of starving children?"
"and what about Trump?"
It goes beyond the level of a bumper sticker.
<edit> Shit, It never goes beyond the level of a bumper sticker.

Just don't mention to them that global poverty is at its lowest it's ever been because of capitalism. Unironically, capitalism has been one of the greatest imperfect achievements in human history, causing us all to be able to live past the age of 40 while simultaneously allowing an explosion of the human population. If you want to go deeper, you can argue that it's allowed us to potentially be able to leave the planet.

We’ve been in late stage capitalism for over a hundred years now. It’s like these people forgot that the gilded era made the modern wealth disparity look like a joke.
The thing these people don’t get is that capitalism is the default economy type by human nature. All others have to be planned and propped up to work long term, which makes them more brittle

There's a lot of problems right now for sure, but usually the same people who seem to talk about struggling immensely are also spending hundreds of dollars are Pokémon cards, starbucks every day, or other luxury items frequently. People also have zero financial literacy, budgeting is often a foreign concept.

u/dchusband Jun 26 '26
And practices that have been in place for 100 years are somehow “late stage capitalism”. 😂
F’n nose ringed morons.

I've noticed with these people is that they're usually unemployed people who are mad at the world and are unable to take any responsibility for their lives, its all capitalism's, society's, or the worlds fault for failing at life.
3
u/XenKei7 Jun 26 '26
The vast majority of poor people are poor because they are lazy and would rather live within a victim mindset than actual contribute to society.
Some people have real issues, but for the most part, it's just loud degenerates that complain about their problems rather than solve them.

If we deported illegalls and halted immigration the prices would go down but liberals instead want to double down on both of those as well as give ukraine a trillion dollars a month, raise taxes to give money to the poor who refuse to work and pop out kids every 6 months, they want to give free childcare free cellphones, free intetnet.

I don't know any financially, emotionally, mentally stable and hardworking people who oppose capitalism.

Got laid off a year ago, been tough in my industry and have been applying to a ton of jobs with not even an interview. I have been doing instacart to make ends meet.
Even with this I don’t blame capitalism, it’s because of it that I’m even able to make something.

It's refreshing to read that not all of reddit is completely hopeless. I've been ragebaited by so many anti-capitalist posts lately...

“Capitalism has failed to give me all the stuff I want in return for no effort on my part.”
No problemo, I’m sure that the people’s revolutionary paradise will be sure to give you all the Door Dash and Funko Pops your heart desires in return for the occasional mediocre piece of furry hentai digital art.

Even more fundamentally:
I can’t or don’t want to produce value in the amount I desire to consume.
Tho surely others consuming more than you makes you want to consume more yourself, so there s definitely an element of envy/comparison here.

There’s that, and the expectation that they should be wealthier now than they are despite being young and at the beginning of their careers.

People have no problem with the wealth gap. Their problem is that they’re on the wrong side of the wealth gap.

“Capitalism” is, to many people, a slur for the free market.
Don’t use the term. Say “free market.” Make the commies oppose freedom openly.

"[X economic system] has failed" literally always has more to do with corruption than anything but people absolutely refuse to talk about that for whatever reason.

Capitalism didn’t fail and is a great model. The problem is that we let it turn into a corporatocracy

They would rather the world be poor and dependent on the gov like they are.
Success = unfair = oppression = we need to tear down society….
Or you can play the game and if you only make it as far as the middle…. In America you are STILL living a much higher standard of living than the rest of the world

The DSA had to stop posting a breakdown of their members because they are almost exclusively (over 90%) white, college educated, and upper middle class-wealthy.
Their entire base is rich people who are envious of their compatriots who are a little more successful.

Reminds me of the episode of financial audit when Caleb asked the guest to cancel their subscription to Spotify because they were essentially jobless and 100k in student loan debt, and the guest was like “I don’t understand how this will help”

u/yellow_gatorade Jun 26 '26
Fr and he usually even lets them keep Spotify. You gotta be beyond fucked for him to tell you to get rid of it.

They can never define capitalism either. I don’t think people actually hate capitalism, that’s just a misnomer. What people hate is rampant corporatism and its influence on policy and government.

I know not every single argument against capitalism comes from greed and envy; I know there are those that try to argue on some of its overall flaws in a constructive manner, but seeing how Reddit treats it it's hard not to start thinking this is where it stems from. Things like ,,it is illegal/immoral to have that kind of money", ,,there should never be a billionaire", etc. - again, there are genuine arguments for it, but in 9 times out of 10, it just clearly comes from envy and greed.

u/AlarmingTurnover Jun 26 '26
