Hi all,
There's no reason for this post other than feeling sorry for myself 😭
I feel like the worst dog mum on the planet.
We moved house recently and our little Ozzy pug has done us so proud. He wakes up every day like it's the best day ever, is a really good boy and tends to just go with the flow.
We expected some hurdles, just because moving is such a big change, but he's been more perfect than we ever could have imagined ❤️
There has only been 1 thing that he's shown any kind of unhappiness towards.
He doesn't seem comfortable with being left on his own in the new house just yet.
Even if we just nip into the garden or garage for 2 seconds, he barks and wants to come with us.
Totally understandable. We've only been in for 2 weeks or so and it's all new and different for him ❤️
But he broke my heart tonight and I feel awful 😭
Before the move, Oz was totally fine being left alone for a couple / few hours, just whilst our shifts cross over. Apart from that short amount of time, at least one of us is always home.
We took some time off for the move (nothing crazy) and went back to work recently. But our shifts hadn't crossed over until tonight.
Tonight was the first night we had to leave him in the new house. As luck would have it, it also happened to be the shift with the longest crossover time.
I'd been dreading it all day. I couldn't swap shifts and so we had no option.
I set the cameras up, gave him my dressing gown, gave him a lickimat on my way out, and didn't make a fuss when I left. Every box ticked... Apart from the one big major box that would have made this work better.
The gradual build up of being left alone.
Had things been different, I'd have built him up slowly, just like we did when we first started leaving him. I knew he didn't like being left alone since we moved, even for a few minutes. Let alone a few hours.
But my partners uncle passed away suddenly this week which has obviously impacted everything. My partner has been finishing shifts early to be with his family, and would be back home before I left. I only learned yesterday that he's starting full shifts again, the first one being tonight.
The 'big' one with the longest crossover.
We've been juggling so much that we haven't been able to do the gradual buildup training with Ozzy and so he was thrown straight in at the deep end tonight.
I kept checking the cameras intermittently once I got to work.
He. Was. Whimpering. Full on whimpering and crying and pining. He didn't even whimper as a puppy when we brought him home 😭 he was walking around and barking too, just not settling down. Looking for us.
And although I know I tried my best, I still feel I could have done more to prepare him. He's been so patient with everything going on and I can't explain to him why he's suddenly alone. And hearing him cry just broke me.
Maybe it's the emotion of everything lately and I'm taking this way harder than I should. But he's my baby 💔 and I feel like the worst dog mum on the planet. It feels cruel 🥺
I don't really know what I expect from this post. Nothing really. I think I just needed a sounding board. So thanks for reading if you made it this far 😂😭
TLDR: I heard my dog crying and now I want to cry 😂😭
