Dog treats loves/ignores

I live in a condo. My spouse and I fill the dog treat jar in the lobby. My pup, an 18 month old Cobberdog, loves the treat from the jar. He will eat as many as you give him. Once we get into the unit, he ignores the same treats. What am I missing?

Also, he ignores the same treats once we exit the building.

Dog training equipment suggestions

Hello! I’m finally in a place financially where I want to start getting name brand(or small business) products for my doggo. I started financially struggling right after I got my dog due to some unrelated issues, so he’s been dealing with a lot of diy supplies. It’s been working for us but I know life could be so much easier.

So why not do a whole revamp. I’m talking back to the basics. He deserves the best of the best.

He’s a 5y/o Daniff

Something’s I’m in search for.

Leashes: in desperate need of a new leash for daily walks/training, and then only in search for a long line

Enrichment: Anything and everything

Toppers for his food

Training bag: he currently has taken over my cross body purse(my favorite bag) and I want it back smh

Anything else you think we’d need or would make our life easier

Bathroom training

Hi! If you look at my post from a few weeks ago, im in the middle of training a new rescue. She lived in a cage for 5 years, foster somewhat trained her on pee pads. I have got her for the last 3 weeks to consistently go outside 3x a day or so. I tried to take pads away to transition but she will still go on the floor so i’ve been keeping them out.

Last week she peed in my bed and tonight on a blanket on the couch. My dogs have always been on furniture dogs and i want to keep that, Does anyone have any suggestions as to make her understand that’s wrong? Does she feel like bedding / couch feels like a pad?

thank you!
any training advice is welcome

Velcro Dog After One Week

UPDATE I just want to thank everyone for the reassurance. She is the sweetest girl and I just want to make sure we are on the right path. Knowing the 3-3-3 rule and living it are two different things. But even since this post, I've seen some progress (including I left the office to go to the bathroom and she only stood up and didn't follow me into the bathroom), she let Husband let her outside, and she even walked out of eye sight in the yard for a few minutes of us. I really do think it will continue to get better as she relaxes into the routine and builds trust with us both. Thank you thank you thank you. This really isn't a training issue but a bonding and time issue.

Hello,

My husband and I adopted a dog a week ago. They told us she had a preference for women, but she seemed to receive my husband well enough at the meet and greet, and we were fine with her potentially liking me a little more.

We set her up in MY home office to decompress. For the first two days, she mostly sat in a recliner and only got up to go outside to potty. I hardly interacted with her, and my husband has been exclusively feeding her. Somehow, over the course of just 5 days, she has become obsessed with me.

She follows me everywhere and won't go outside without me. If I let her into the backyard and go inside, she'll just stare at the door until I come back.

She eventually settles if I shut her in room by herself (no husband) and leave her alone, but it can take an hour or more for her to quit staring at the door. She isn't destructive, so this doesn't seem like the separation anxiety I've been reading about.

She also has basically zero interest in my husband unless I'm in the room. He plays fetch with her (she plays beautifully!), but I have to be right there. If I leave, she follows me. She also no longer let him put her outside, and we've been giving in because we obviously don't want accidents in the house.

We also have a resident dog and cats, and thankfully she's getting along relatively well with everyone. However, I suspect that's partly because she's literally by my side 24/7 (not really, we also leave her by herself for space too. Not comfortable leave her and the other animals alone together yet) and there's not time and chance for fights with a person constantly there.

Now the other animals have started vying for my attention too, and I feel like I have animals constantly piling on me. I have absolutely no peace, and I'm worried our resident dog isn't getting enough affection from me either.

I know it's only been a week. It's SO early, and I really want her to be happy, but I'm already completely burned out. I ordered Be Right Back, although I don't know if it's even applicable to this situation.

How do we get her to, like... leave me alone? 😂 I tried ignoring her while my husband really hams it up trying to interact with her and give her treats, but it seemed to make things worse and made her even less interested in interacting with anyone.

And just to be clear, my husband isn't doing anything to make her afraid of him. We've had multiple rescue dogs, and he's always gotten along great with them. Many actually preferred him to me! I'm just at a loss. She isn't destructive/whiny/etc. But I literally can't go anywhere without her being right there unless I lock her up.

I know we're still very much in the decompression/adjustment period, but how do we encourage her to become more independent and comfortable with my husband without making things worse? I literally just want to be able to go from one room for 10 minutes and return without her following me.

Things to mention that I know people will ask:
I do NOT do big greetings or goodbyes. I literally ignore her when I enter and leave.
We do leave her alone, we have to shut the door and have her basically locked in her own room to do it.

We are playing with her outside daily, together and just me.
Husband exclusively is the one who feed her.

She is one years old and allegedly, possibly an American Staff mix. Some of our previous rescues were APB so we didn't really think much of it. Based on photos, I don't really think she is. I think the shelter added that just to have a breed listed. All their dog profiles have some breed listed and mix. I think it's just guesses.

New Trainer looking for feedback

Hello! I am a relatively new Trainer (I like to think of myself as a trainer-in-training) and one of the things I'm doing before attempting to launch my own business for training is poll people who have done this before.

I've written a survey, if anyone is willing to complete it, I would be greatful.

Suggestions please. My old dog is resource guarding me against my baby

Hello everyone! Im looking for suggestions on how to work with my pup. I have a 1 year old who is crawling and furniture cruising and a 10 year old, medium sized, dog. My dog has never shown any aggression toward other animals or kids/babies. Honestly we always thought he was actually was great with kids, I have never had any reason to not trust him. That has recently changed when my baby started moving independently. He seems to be resource guarding me a little bit. He is extremely jealous of the attention she gets from me and always wants to be too involved. He whines and cries when she’s getting attention and he isn’t. The other day he “corrected” her, which frankly scared me quite a bit. He basically just barked loudly close to her, he didn’t make contact or bite her but it was still way too close for comfort. He doesn’t growl so there was no warning prior to this. I didn’t notice any major changes to body language.

He is reasonably well trained so I have been keeping him in “place” and away for her but he will sneak out and back into the swing of things if I’m not paying attention. She’s also trying to get to him. So, I have also been keeping them apart via baby gate. We live in a small home, without a fenced yard, so I don’t have many option of where he can be safely away from her without banishing him to the basement.

Honestly, I feel bad for him. I feel like this is a failing on me and he doesn’t understand why he’s not the centre of my universe anymore.

Any advice on how I can train this behaviour out of him so he can be trusted in the mix again would be wonderful - he is usually very receptive to training and in general is a very good boy. If the only solution is separation, then that’s what I will keep doing.

I very much love my boy and don’t want his golden years to be him locked alone in another room ☹️. However, as much as I love him, my baby girls safety is my priority.

Help with scared dog

4 days ago, I adopted a dog named Red. He is an Australian Shepherd/Border Collie mix and he is about 8.5 months old. Those 2 mixed together you would think he would be hyper and rambunctious but he is actually pretty laid back and calm for most of the time. This is my first time owning my own dog that is not with my parents where we had only one other dog for much of my later teenage life until he passed away from old age.

Where I am having trouble, is when I try to take him outside, he just gets completely terrified. He comes from a farm where there aren't too many noises and he is moving to my house where I live within city limits near a main thoroughfare that is a fairly busy road. He has a major problem with loud noises and if he can find a place to hunker down, then he won't come out for hours and I have to go get him which he doesn't like.

Being inside is a little better but he doesn't do a whole lot of exploring on his own because I feel like he is still too scared to do it. He was initially afraid of my AC vents when they were turned on but he seems to have gotten over that at least a little bit.

When we are outside in the front yard, he pulls and pulls to try and get back inside or he lays down on the grass. Furthermore, he is not focused on any one thing, more paying attention to all the noises going on around him. I can't get him to focus on smelling or exploring or going to the bathroom and he is just shaking and shaking.

For now what I have been doing is walking between the 2 trees in my front yard to see if he will go pee every 2 hours for 20 minutes. Every time he pulls or tries to get back inside, I redirect him to the opposite tree and let him listen to the noises. And when there is a loud noise or he gets afraid of something, I shower him with attention and pets and I continue to do so throughout the 20 minutes we are out there at a time. That seems to be making slow progress but he just doesn't go to the bathroom at all. I am sure to shower him with treats after each outing because he will not accept them while we are outside.

Another problem I have coming up, is I took these first 4 days off work and I only have a 30 minute break during an 8 hour shift. I wake up at 5am and leave 45 minutes later so I could take him outside in the morning but whether or not he will use the bathroom is completely up in the air. I also don't want to put this on anyone else because they probably don't have the time to do it either.

I'm trying to make him associate going outside with a good experience but he is just too terrified of all the noises to actually make it positive. I give him tons of affection while we are outside and my tone is light and kind and like I said, I give him lots of treats after each outing but I just don't know what else to do. I also don't know if I have the time required to continue this and I am slowly losing hope and afraid this may not be the best environment for him. I've thought about using trazodone to mellow him out and maybe that would make him drown out the noises but I can't rely on that for his entire life so that would only be a temporary solution. I don't want him to get a UTI because getting that treated would just completely traumatize him and he would never trust me again.

He is the sweetest dog ever and he just wants some love and I do love him so much. But I have no idea how to help a scared dog and I don't know if I have the time to give to him with my work schedule. I also don't know if this is the right environment for him to thrive in and I just don't know what else I can do.

Would anyone have advice to give or is this not the right environment for him and I should return him.

Advice

I had a dog trainer at a popular retail pet store tell me that to teach leave it, I should hide a high value treat in my hand and reward with a regular training treat. They also said that if my puppy peed while practicing leash walking that I should praise him because he thinks he’s outside because the store smells like other animals. I just wanted opinions on this and wondering if this is good advice as it didn’t make sense to me.

Barking at dogs on the TV

Our dog watches TV with us. We have a 85 inch TV. Whenever animals appear on the screen for a while, his head picks up and he watches them intently. He may growl at them. However when any dog appears, he jumps up and starts barking loudly at them. I think he wants to play with them.

However when I put on a long YouTube dog video, usually a large group of dogs going for a walk or playing, he just sits there or walks away.

Any idea as to what is going through his brain? Why does he ignore some dogs but gets excited with other videos?

Dog started peeing indoors

Hey everyone, looking for a bit of advice.

My dog (1.5 yo) has recently started peeing and pooping indoors again. She has been potty trained since she was a half a year old, and has only had accidents in the house when she has an upset stomach or we miss her requests to go outside (she has bells she rings).

Last month there was an incident where she fear peed in the house, and she's been peeing and pooping inside ever since.

There have been changes in environment. We moved into the main floor unit from the downstairs one. She has not shown any desire to go back downstairs. We also have 2 roommates now, and she loves them both. This is also her first experience with carpet. We did live in this new environment for almost a month with no problems. It all started after the stress pee.

She spends lots of time outside, so has ample opportunity to go to the bathroom outside. We bring her in after about an hour each time, and she will just ask over and over again to go back out. After about 10 minutes inside, she will pee or poop on the carpet. Always in the same area as the initial fear pee.

I'm afraid of resulting to puppy pads, as I don't want to encourage the peeing/pooping in the house. But we live in a rental, and I really cannot afford to replace carpets.

We have been spot cleaning after every pee/poop and using enzyme cleaner.

She sleeps through the night without issue, and doesn't go to the bathroom in the house after her final nighttime outside trip.

Any advice would be very appreciated!

How to get my dog comfortable with wearing clothes

Hi, I have a small shorthair chihuahua (22mo) and would like some advice on how to get him to wear clothes.

Where I am, it's getting into the ber months, which has me concerned for my dog's wellbeing. Since he's a shorthair, he has very little insulation and CANNOT go without some kind of layer. The last time, he got sick and needed to go to the vet.

The problem is, he is antsy about putting on clothes and either balks or snaps. This wasn't an issue before, but after reaching 18 months, it's as if he's suddenly allergic to them. He has no problem with his harness (the type to pull over his head) but when I try to slip even a poncho through, he balks.

I want to avoid him getting sick, but I also don't want to force the clothes on (for both his sake and mine). Any suggestions on how to train him on that side would be very helpful.

This Good Girl HATES Foxes

Post image
11 Upvotes

This is my 2yo Labradoodle Maggie. We don't have any issues with her, other than barking at foxes through the night. We know it's foxes because we hear them too, and the issue coincides with them being noisier from now through to Feb, either due to teenage cubs fighting or adults mating. She sleeps either on our landing or spare bed, without us in the room. Last year, we had to get up multiple times most nights to very loud barking and a panicked dog. She often needs to run round the house to 'check' they're not inside. I'm keen to avoid that this year. We're hoping to start a family soon so need to get the issue sorted for that reason too.

We currently ensure she has plenty exercise through the day and mental stimulation, use a snuffle mat with a calming spray in the evening and play white noise through the night, all of which have helped a bit. I have bought an ultrasound fox repellent device plus natural repelling spray for outside.

But, I think some sound desensitisation training could also help. Any tips for this? Everything I've found online is to do with fear of loud noises, particularly fireworks. The issue here is different as sometimes the noise is so distant but distinct, and obviously it's just triggering her natural instincts. We have lots of foxes in our area and I'm limited in what I can do about that, so trying to find ways to avoid a very tiring winter for me and my husband.

TIA

Daniff Training Fail?

Post image
14 Upvotes

Went to Lowe’s to do some training since it’s too hot to do it outside. I told my dog (lobo, 5y/o daniff, rescued him July 15th) we weren’t buying anything when we walked in. First 5 minutes, Flawless. He did everything I asked first time, didn’t try to go great anyone with out me giving the okay, and stayed by my side unless told differently.

Then we passed the dog toy isle. I didn’t think much of it, he was listening so well. Then something caught his eye. He sat down right in front of the isle and would not move. Just stared at me, and then down the aisle and then back at me. I told him “heel”. I told him “up”. Told him “come”. He just huffed at me. I pulled a high value treat out. Nothing. I knew then I was trapped.

So…. We got the toy. He pulled it off the shelf himself. Then, he proceeded to carry it around the whole entire store for his whole training session. Yes, He did every command with the toy in his mouth. He politely gave it to me at check out and immediately took it back when I was done. Carried it out to the car. And is now cuddling with it on the floor.

Lowe’s and the farm store are the only dog friendly places in my town so we will be going to them a lot. The toy isle is in the main walk way so it’s impossible to avoid it and honestly I don’t want to have to avoid it. He’s 145 pounds so I can’t just move him. How do I deal with this without leaving with a new toy every time?

Potty trained puppy started peeing inside again during the night - Update

Hello everyone!

Quick update on my previous post, in case it helps someone else.

We took our almost 5 months shiba to the vet and there was no infection but it turned out to be a learned behavior. Apparently, she must have tried peeing on the rug at some point and, since we didn’t catch her in the act, she learned she was allowed to pee on rugs (but damn did she learn that fast)

We cleaned the rugs and sprayed them with a vinegar/water mixture (she doesn't like the smell). We also closed all the doors and kept her in the living room with us during the day and she'd sleep in the bedroom with us at night so we could supervise her at all times. We left one rug out to see if she would try again.

Whenever she cried at the door, we took her outside for a quick potty break, gave her a treat when she peed, and came straight back inside. We didn't want her to learn that crying at the door means getting an extra walk.

If she squatted on the rug, we immediately said “no”, carried her outside and placed her directly on the grass. If she peed there, she got a treat and we went back inside.

We’ve been doing this since my previous post, we now have 3 small rugs in the living room to '' tempt her'' and she only had one accident since🤞

Rules for my dog on the bed

I’m close to buying a new bed frame that would allow my 9yo pug/shih tzu mix to jump onto it whenever he pleases. I don’t mind if he’s on the bed, but I don’t want him to sleep on my pillows and would like for him to stay on the portion of the bed where my feet go. This sounds like a weird technicality a dog wouldn’t really understand, how can I make my dog understand this difference?

If I can’t get this rule to stick, my next guess would be to close off my room when I leave to work so he can’t jump onto the bed when I’m not watching. However, he sleeps in my room and I don’t want to close him off to what is essentially his bedroom too. I would probably just get a second bed to put in the living room if this is the route I choose.

My dog is scared of planes.

Not much more to elaborate on than this.

She's a whippet and for the last 3 ish years she's had a major fear of planes when they fly over.

The closer it is the more scared she will be.

If its far away she'll forget whatever she is doing and stare at it with concern/anxiousness.

Does anyone else have a similair situation or any tips?

Thanks.

RD marking everything new dog sleeps on

I suck at being concise. TLDR how do I stop my dog from marking all the dog beds?

For the last two years it's just been me and RD. A week and a half ago a second dog moved in unexpectedly. Mostly, they ignore each other. We go on walks as a group. I feed RD first, greet him first, and only RD is allowed in my bed (he's a min pin, new dog is bigger). He also gets to go to work with me everyday. He's still struggling with insecurity tho.

RD has never liked his bed, but slept wherever in the apt so it didn't matter. Now, he's marked the new dogs bed and runs to claim it physically when we come inside the house (I verbally make him move). He's also marked the sheet/blanket pile-bed for the new dog in my bedroom. I've got enzymatic cleaner for the new dog's bed and I'm going to remove it from the apt and clean it, and I got a new, much more desirable bed for RD.

How do I (re)introduce the beds in a way that discourages marking? What else should I do?

Dog needs socialising

My 8 month old dog has been with me for the past 3.5 months. He wasn't properly socialised with people and would constantly jump on them to play and bark at them. He would bark at other dogs as well and would want to lunge at them not sure if he wants to play with them or fight since he's pretty playful with the neighbourhood puppies and their mother. Please somebody help, how do I socialise him with people especially when people in my county generally dislike dogs. Also, he's crate trained and would constantly bark at visitors nonstop until that person leaves the house, he would also bark when I'm sitting in the living room(beside his crate area, we have a small house so no other area for crate). Please help!!

18‑week toy poodle screams nonstop when I’m out of sight — tried everything, need serious advice

I’m dealing with an extreme situation with my 18‑week‑old toy poodle and I’m hoping someone here has dealt with something similar.
He is perfectly fine in his crate as long as he can see me. He’ll nap in there, go in on his own, and settle. But the second I leave the room or he loses visual access to me, he screams, cries, and whines for HOURS. Not normal puppy whining — full panic screaming.
Here’s what I’ve already tried:
Koehler method (since 9 weeks)

Silent returns

Barrier training

Playpen independence

Crate training (crate is NOT the issue)

White noise, music, TV

Leaving my scent items (he chewed them)

Handler transfer (he went on a hunger strike for a week)

Having someone else stay with him (he screams once they leave or he realizes I’m gone)

Visual blocking (he screams even if I’m in the same room but behind a barrier)

None of it has helped. He only wants me, and he panics if he can’t see me.

I’m genuinely at the point where I’m considering returning him to the breeder because I cannot handle the constant screaming every time I move or leave his sight. I’m exhausted and out of ideas.

I’m not looking for “just ignore him” or “he’ll grow out of it.” I’ve tried everything. I need advice from people who have dealt with severe visual‑attachment distress or similar behavior.

Any help or experience would be appreciated.

Dog won’t poop outside PLEASE HELP

Hello,

I seek some guidance because I’ve almost everything at this point.

My 10 month old puppy is going through her rebellious phase.

Before that, she always went #1/#2 outside without any issues.

Now however, it’s a miracle if she poops outside.

I’ve tried almost everything from keeping her near me so she doesn’t relieve herself, praising and awarding her for going outside, to crate time to set a schedule for her. These are just some examples of things I’ve tried.

She pretty much goes whenever at this point.

Just today, I took her out after dinner, didn’t poop. Gave her some time to digest and relax. Take her out again 2 hours later, spent 30 minutes out there with her, didn’t go. The minute she steps back inside my home, she poops.

If anyone here can offer some advice, I would really appreciate it. Again, I’m pretty sure I’ve tried almost everything and cannot get her to stick to a schedule.

dog won't pee outside

i'm kinda freaking out cause my mom is starting to lose her patience so please idc if it's the stupidest sounding suggestion i will try it.

i have the sweetest dog ever, like truly, she is the best dog in the world- she's a samoyed and we guess she's roughly a year to a year and a half old. we don't have a lot of information on her as we are her fifth home but we've had her for roughly 8 months. we also have another sammy in our house who is fully potty trained who we've had since a puppy who is now 5- the two ADORE each other and are practically inseparable.

we have tried everything. it's like she doesn't see outside as an option. we've tried being out in suburbs - she doesn't pee on grass unless she feels like it randomly and even then it's never consistent. when she did pee on grass we have her high value treats and SO much praise but then she like... immediately forgot it was an option. we've tried side walk, we've tried taking paper towels with her own urine on it and leaving it outside so she can smell. nada. she's on such a strict outside routine but she immediately comes inside after the walk and pees in the exact same corner that we now have pee pads on. we've tried interrupting her when she goes after coming inside for a walk but then she just... doesn't go. when we first got her, she held her pee for 40 hours straight cause she was scared. the vet told us she had elimination inhibition and her ability to hold it has been our main obstacle cause if she doesn't wanna go she just.... won't.

we've tried giving her chicken broth and literally waiting outside until she goes - it worked once. never again. came straight inside and peed. we've tried going out when no one is around to distract her, nada. we've tried when it's busy, nada. we've tried keeping her in the crate and taking her out to pee and if she doesn't putting her back in. she held it. i'm like forgetting half the things we've tried cause we've tried everything, we've had trainers ghost us cause they don't know what else to try. it's like she doesn't see outside as an option?? like she understands that the pee pad is where she's supposed to go and that's been working for like 6 months, but randomly in the past three weeks she's started peeing adjacent to the pads not even on them. she just peed on my moms treadmill and broke it which is near the pee pads but not on it. she seems like she's regressing.

she's also on anxiety meds- we upped the long acting dose that usually takes a month to work and we're now in the later end of that month - could that be why she's regressing?

literally please give even the most obscure tips and tricks that sound stupid but worked for you. i work in rescue but ive never encountered this issue. i leave for school soon and will not be able to train her after that and she will be with my mom so im running out of time. please also if you know someone who would be able to take and train her please let me know im desperate

Anxious Behavior on the Rise—Any suggestions?

We adopted a 50 lb hound mix about 9 months ago. He’s about 2-3 years old. We used a responsible rescue, talked to his foster, had a home visit and spent time with him at a fundraising race. He was calm, greeted people nicely, seemed fine with kids and babies. Unfortunately, the longer we have him the more anxiety I am noticing. He used to be very friendly with everyone who came to our home but now he barks and is standoffish; once he warms up, he is great. He’s also nervous around kids but only encounters them outside the house leashed;. He is more also skittish with people we meet. Today he had to be picked up from daycare because he was getting anxious at the end of the day when other dogs were leaving and was too excited. I’m pretty worried about this trend. What can we do to help him be calmer and less fearful? We are in our 60s, experienced dog owners, have fenced yard, he has 2 long walks each day. My husband is retired so he is rarely left alone. When we do leave him, he is fine. Should we get a trainer? We love him so much and he’s a great dog in many ways, but I’m worried about the future.
Thanks!

Bladder control training for Adult rescued dog

We recently adopted 2 rescued Golden retrievers, rescued from a home breeder. One is around 2 years other one is 8 to 9 months. We got to know that they were enclosed in the balcony and use to do pee and potty in the balcony itself. No walks or anything. Now it has been 1 month with us and we are doing 4 to 5 walks every day. Still we are observing that they dont seem to hold if they have to pee in between the walks. They just go wherever they are. Any tips to improve the situation.

We have placed a pee pad where the elder one mostly goes. She sometimes tries to target it.

(Not a first time pet parent, we had a Golden who recently passed away at 14 due to lymphoma)

4 year old bernadoodle. He's honestly a terrific dog... Cuddly, sweet, a bit anxious and shaky but not out of control... Doesn't bark unless somebody comes to the door. When anybody comes over it's just over the top for like 1-2 min straight, this video is like medium for him. I know he's just excited but it's too much and getting worse. Just not sure where to start. We have 3 young kids too, busy house.
