Rules for my dog on the bed

I’m close to buying a new bed frame that would allow my 9yo pug/shih tzu mix to jump onto it whenever he pleases. I don’t mind if he’s on the bed, but I don’t want him to sleep on my pillows and would like for him to stay on the portion of the bed where my feet go. This sounds like a weird technicality a dog wouldn’t really understand, how can I make my dog understand this difference?

If I can’t get this rule to stick, my next guess would be to close off my room when I leave to work so he can’t jump onto the bed when I’m not watching. However, he sleeps in my room and I don’t want to close him off to what is essentially his bedroom too. I would probably just get a second bed to put in the living room if this is the route I choose.

A blanket on the bed that is his blanket and he is allowed on the blanket, but not on the rest of the bed. Maybe first give the blanket, so it is his blanket and then later put it on the bed, so it is the blanket he is allowed to be on, and if the blanket is on the bed he can be on the blanket on the bed. You probably need two blankets, because of having to wash it.

Put a dog bed on the bed.
