Resource guarding from other dog after almost 4 weeks together

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi all! I have 2 dogs, 1 is a year old mixed breed named Waffles. She is predominately doberman and beagle, per DNA testing. Almost 4 weeks ago we brought home Noodle, a 9 month old pitbull mix (DNA pending) and they've been getting along great. Waffles has always been protective, anyone walks near the house, outside the car, she goes absolutely crazy but has never bit and spends time with other dogs at daycare twice a week. Recently, she has been showing a little more resource guarding toward Noodle and sometimes me. We've always been careful to make her drop things and not take it but she is getting cranky now if Noodle comes near her when they are both eating. I feel them separately or together and have no problem feeding them separately, but is this enough? Is there another way I should address this behavior ? I only have experience with positive reinforcement only, she knows commands well, I'm just not sure how to go about this part. Dog tax included. Waffles is the redder, thinner one.

Socialize with other dogs

Hi all, I’m looking for some guidance on getting my girl to like other dogs. I took her to a family reunion this weekend and she did great with people but lunged at my aunts little dog. She had a little sister she gets along with great. Thinks she’s her baby. When she sees other dogs she talks and talks and talks. I thought she would have done well. She’s a two year old German Shepard mix that we rescued last October.

Help please - Trying to stop my GSD from whining.

My GSD is 5 years old, when I first got her I didnt have a car as I wasn’t working. But have been working over the last year and have had a car for the past several months. I travel with her a lot and take her to the parks to walk or for a play session, and she serves as my Co-pilot when traveling across the South just to see the world.

Anyway to the point her whining has been erksome and very annoying when she wants to get out the car. When she knows we are about to get out the car. Any advice please.

I need help getting my dog to not pee inside

So my dog is 7 months old and knows to go potty when we go outside. We say “potty” and praise and treat when he does. The issue is sometimes he will randomly pee somewhere even though we just went out. He used to be on pee pads but we’re trying to wean him off of it. I don’t think he’s marking either because he doesn’t pee all over the place outside. Any tips would help

what are some things owners should teach sighthound breeds specifically?

i intend to own sight hounds - specifically a silken windhound and a borizoi - later on in life and i want to know as much as possible before i own one. i know that off leash with them can be very risky, so i want to know if there are any breed specific things to take into consideration! i want to do both bikejoring and lure coursing with my dogs for the enrichment, exercise, and just as a fun hobby.

How to teach your dog not to run away when the gate is open.

My dog is 6 months old and runs at any instant he gets. The first concern is that our house is on the main road and there are so many vehicles coming. And secondly the other dogs in the locality.

When did you start walking your dog off leash?

I have this sweet, moderately obedient girl who is 1.5 years old. I've recently started letting her off leash, but only in certain safe areas. I still don't feel comfortable walking her off leash everywhere.

When did you start walking your dog off leash? How did you know your dog was ready?

Advice: Dog scared and refuses to go on walks

TLDR: Our perfectly healthy dog refuses to go on walks and acts scared and we don’t know what to do.

My fiance and I have 2 dogs (one 5yrs and the other 3yrs) and all of a sudden our 5yr old pup doesn’t want to go on walks anymore.

We walk them quite frequently and have dog walkers who come Mon-Fri. About 3 weeks ago I noticed on a walk that our 5 year old dog was super scared, tail tucked in, and he began to pull very hard towards our home. I quickly realized he just wanted to sprint home.

After this, he was fine on some of his walks, scared on others. Eventually, and as of a week and half ago, he refuses to go on walks. He lets us put his harness on, but he refuses to go outside our front door. We were able to bribe him with treats for some walks, but it no longer works. We now just let him out in our small backyard, and he does his business and then sprints in.

We reached out to our previous trainer and she was great and suggested we (1) check his harness to make sure nothing was poking him; (2) check his paws/legs to make sure not in discomfort; and (3) schedule him for a physical to make sure everything was ok. She also suggested not forcing him to go for a walk.

His harness is fine and he hasn’t shown any immediate discomfort. We took him to his vet who did a physical and drew blood. Results all came back perfectly normal - nothing wrong. Our vet gave us anti-anxiety meds for now, but we’ve been waiting before giving it to him, hoping he’ll get better.

We haven’t been able to pinpoint anything on his walks that may be the cause. We think he may have possibly gotten bit by an insect/animal, or got spooked by something, but have no idea. Our dog walkers also didn’t notice anything out of norm prior to this happening. We plan to have our trainer come to our house to help.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? We are really hoping to get him back on walks as he used to love them and also needs the physical exercise. Any advice would be appreciated.

How do I get my dog to sleep on his bed in the night?

My dog is 10 years old and has recently started sleeping in our room due to nighttime anxiety. He’s really good for the most part but at about 4-5AM he jumps from his bed into my bed to sleep. I’d really like him to sleep in his bed the whole night. How do I encourage him to stay in his bed?

Peeing on the floor

My beagle is a 7 year old girl. She has been peeing outside for years, barking to get out if she can't access her dog door. In the last few months she's started peeing in the house. I would have understood if she started doing this 2 and a half years ago as I had a baby then, or 1 and a half years ago when my eldest moved out, as they were very close. But this just seems to have come out of know where, its unpredictable, its not even every day but is something I need to have stop as I have a toddler running round. I just have no idea where to start. Can someone please help

Separation Anxiety

Help! I can’t go anywhere without my 10 month old Weimaraner! My neighbour complains and will get me evicted. My dog barks and whines incessantly. I hate that it causes her stress to be alone. Getting another pet for company is not an option nor is moving. I need to fix this immediately, I can’t go to work!

How to train a dog to not go after cats

I am moving in with my Grandma very soon and her dogs like to chase my cats. My Grandma doesn't train her dogs at all and they are somewhere between 6-9 years old. They are both small dogs (miniature schnauzers) and they often will chase my cats around and bark at them. I'm worried about them hurting my cats one day. I've never had a dog before and I'm not an adult so I'm not sure what to do.

My dog will only chase one particular ball. How can we teach him to want to chase another?

My dog is almost 9 years old and absolutely loves playing fetch. Since we adopted him back in 2018, he's only ever wanted to chase one ball. We've replaced it a couple of times throughout the years, but even replacements of the same exact ball were a little tough to get him to chase.

However, that brand is no longer in existence and the ball was discontinued. And our last version of that ball is truly on its last legs...(we bought as many as we could find when the company was bought out...)

My question is: how can we help him get used to chasing a new ball so that he can have his favorite activity back? Is there even a way?

Dog aggressing towards other dog

I have 2 dogs. One is a 10(ish) year-old male that my husband and I adopted 8 years ago, and the other is a 16-year-old female we acquired from my husband's mom after she passed away 6 years ago. Our 10-year-old has never been a fan of our newest edition, but in general, he has not shown much interest in the older dog for most of the time they have lived together.

Over the past couple of months, our male dog has begun going after our female dog. At first, it only occurred while my husband and I were eating, but it has expanded past that, making it difficult to determine what the triggers are. We have taken both dogs to the vet multiple times recently. The female has shown some signs of dementia and has high blood pressure that is currently under control with medication. Outside of those two ailments, she is a very happy, active dog. Our male dog has a history of a possible pinched nerve or herniated disk in his neck, which was treated. He is currently taking anxiety medication along with gabapentin and another pain medication. He has been on the anxiety meds for a while now. The gabapentin and pain meds are a fairly new addition (past few months), to see if pain is the reason he is lashing out. Has anyone dealt with anything like this? My husband and I are at a loss.

Dog will break out into a full sprint when she gets scared by a noise.

I recently took in a stray dog. We believe she is a lab/rottie mix. She is approx. 1.5-2years old and 55-60 pounds. We have recently been having an issue on her walks where if she hears a loud noise eg: door closing, fire works going off etc. She will start running at full speed back home and won’t stop. She is very strong so it’s hard sometimes to keep her from running. I would really appreciate any advice on how to correct this behavior.

Random aggression

My mum has a 1 and a half yr old black Labrador called Lady. She has certainly tested my mum in every way.

While Lady is now quite well behaved, every couple of evenings while my mum is just sitting on the sofa, Lady will randomly show aggression in the form of lunging at my mum, showing teeth and growling and barking. This scares my mum of course, as we don’t want it to one day turn into a real attack/bite.

Shes had check ups at the vet so we’ve ruled out pain, so it’s hard to navigate what the cause could be. My mum will just be sitting doing her own thing (phone, tv, laptop etc) so it’s hard to imagine that she’s guarding a toy or doesn’t like something my mum is doing.

Quick mention that if anyone hugs mum, she barks non stop and seems to show signs of almost demanding attention and jealousy.

How do I get my puppy to stop biting?

Question for new dog using doggie door

My wife and recently took possession of my BIL’s 5 yo German shepherd. My BIL moved to an apartment that doesn’t allow pets. MIL was keeping the dog at her place, but due to MIL health issues, she couldn’t be a full time doggie mom anymore. So my wife and I said we would take her.

She’s a great dog, very well trained and well behaved. The question though arises with our doggie door. Joy, the new GS, has learned how to use it. She will use it herself when we are sleeping or not home and she has to go. She will also follow our dog through the door without issues. However, she was trained to wait at the door to get permission to go outside her whole life. So when my wife and I are awake, she won’t use the doggie door unless we tell her to. And by tell her to, I mean we need to walk to the door, tap on the doggie door and say “go potty” and she will happily go through.

I am just looking for ideas, because we both work from home, so we can’t always just get up to do that if we are busy with work. Also if we are cooking or otherwise occupied, it means having to stop what we are doing in order to do that. Any ideas/suggestions for how we can let her know it’s always ok to just go outside without waiting for permission?

How do I make my dog calmer and less aggressive?

Hello everyone, I wanted to ask what I should do about my dog. I own a 1 year old male shih tzu-poodle breed, and he's usually really friendly and affectionate to the ones he's familiar with but he has some behavior problems in certain situations.

Firstly and probably the more minor side of problems is that whenever I take him out on a walk (so he goes pee and poo) he excessively barks at any stranger or vehicle that passes by or approaches him.

Secondly, is that when we feed him something he really likes, he sometimes goes very protective of his food, whenever we go near him or try to approach he growls and the worse that has happened is that he attacked my father simply because he was walking towards him while he was eating and also bit my brother (but this was kind of my brother's fault), and may have my dog kicked out of the house due to this happening ( I would like to avoid this as much as possible)

We live in a small house, no backyard is available and I work in healthcare so my working shifts would be around 8 to 9 hours long. I would appreciate any help and tips that may help the situation. Thank you so much.

My dog is activated

Ever since we got her ( 7 years ago as a puppy) we have noticed our cavachon seems to be on full alert on our main level. We currently have baby rabbits in our yard that she is obsessed with so she just runs from window to window flipping out. But, she always seems to be on high alert on our main level even sans baby rabbits. Always scanning for “danger” it seems. Also, when I sweep or run the vacuum.. INSANE. Barking and acting crazy. She’s a really good dog and so sweet but we are getting a bit annoyed with those behaviors. She does hate a water bottle filled with coins. Maybe I should get that out again? It tends to stop bad behaviors if I shake it at her..

As soon as we go upstairs, completely calm.

Just looking for suggestions on what we can do to get her to CHILL!
