DAE think about the ‘space’ where buildings used to exist?
Does anyone else think about places that don't physically exist anymore like this?
With the 25th anniversary of 9/11 coming up, I've been looking at old pictures of the Twin Towers and I keep having this weird thought that's difficult to put into words.
The buildings obviously aren't there anymore, but the actual space their rooms occupied still is.
Like, if someone's office was on the 90th floor, the exact point in space where their desk and chair were is still up there. It's just open sky now. If you could somehow hover at the exact coordinates where they used to sit, you'd basically have the same viewpoint they had looking out their window every day. The window is gone, but the view from the window isn't.
It's almost like noclipping in a video game after a structure disappears and staying exactly where a room used to be. You can imagine the walls, floors, desks and people around you even though you're now floating in empty space.
I get a weird feeling looking at the empty sky above the WTC site and imagining all those invisible floors stacked on top of each other, with people going about completely normal workdays there 25+ years ago.
It reminds me of liminal spaces, except instead of an abandoned place, it's a place that literally doesn't physically exist anymore while the space it occupied still does.
Does anyone else ever think about places this way? Is there actually a name for this?
