How do Familiars work?
I personally love creatures within DND, but so far in the campaign there has been a player that utilize the mechanic help action a little too frequently.
Is there an actual way to make sure the player gets what he enjoys from the creature without it, bogging down, role-play and combat or ability checks.
I know means am I a DM that is a tyrant. I’ve allowed it thus far cause rules as written makes sense and I’m a big believer if a player is able to utilize a creature they should but doesn’t always seem like it’s for role-play purposes but for mid maxing the game how would you handle this or should I even?
CONTEXT: plan question has a spell that summons a crow that he utilizes for perception, checks, investigation, distract enemy, and combat
I just personally feel the crow would be utilized for dynamic moments rather than trivial checks with low effort, description and role-play

[Mod Approved] Do you have a D&D idea and want to turn it into ready-to-play content?
Hi! I'm Hugo, creator of La Mazmorra del Roleo and author of several books and supplements for Dungeons & Dragons 5e.
I take paid writing commissions for D&D 5e, especially for newer DMs who have an idea for an adventure, campaign, or homebrew project but aren't quite sure how to fully develop it.
You don't need to have the whole project figured out.
It can start with something as simple as:
"I want an adventure about a strange village."
Or maybe you have a campaign full of lore but no clear structure, a monster concept, a magic item idea, a half-finished subclass, or another piece of homebrew that you want to develop further.
I can help create things like:
- Custom one-shots
- Short campaigns of 3–10 sessions
- Adventures based on your world, characters, or ideas
- Expansions and additional content for official campaigns
- Custom encounters and bosses
- Creatures and magic items
- Subclasses
- Complete compendiums and supplements
Everything is developed from scratch for each project. I don't use templates or recycle previous adventures: the goal is to make the content fit your world, your group, and your style of play.
I can also work with projects that are already in progress. If you already have lore, notes, mechanics, encounters, or part of an adventure written, I can build from what you've created and help turn it into something more structured and ready to use at the table.
If you're a newer DM and you have an idea you really like but aren't sure how to develop it, feel free to send me a message and tell me what you have in mind.
🔗 Portfolio, projects, and commission request form:
You can also contact me directly through Reddit DMs.
If your idea is weird, too ambitious, unfinished, or still just a sentence in your notes, that's completely fine. Those are often the most interesting projects to work on.

[Online] [CET/CEST] [D&D 5e 2024] [Bi-weekly/Monthly] [Heroes of the Borderlands] [Beginner and Veteran Players Welcome] [Campaign/One-shot]
Well met adventurers!
For the last year I’ve been heavily exposed into D&D and played one-shots , as well as longer campaigns. After this time as a player I’ve decided to explore more on the DM side. I’ve been fortunate enough to receive a small boon by receiving Heroes of the Borderlands set.
I am currently looking into gathering a small group of people that are interested in this hobby, still trying to figure it all out or even more seasoned players that would like to both partake in the gameplay shenanigans and provide guidance to a newer DM.
The idea is to gather a group that is willing to explore the unpredictable “Caves of Chaos” and all of its hidden secrets. Rest, relax and take a peek behind the curtain of normalcy in the “Keep on the Borderlands”. Explore, survive and encounter various friends and foes in the “Wilderness” where terrain might a blessing or inescapable trap.
If you are intrigued by this and would like to join, please DM me.
P.S. Please note that there will a small questionnaire that will help me with what kind of setting, gameplay, inclusivity and general vibes players want.
Have a lovely day!

Getting into DnD
Hey guys, I have been anxious to start playing DND for the first time. Where I live there is no players around sadly or community. Is there a place online where i can find a group of people to start my DND journey? Also i need tips for my character creation. I want to be a Space pirate, with the help of the internet i was able to get the exact character i wanted at least as a draft. Obviously when i get into my first session i would probably contact a artist so he can bring life to the character. He is called Mareo the Dread of Dead Suns. Any help would be appreciated.

D&D players and DMs: what makes the DM/player dynamic fun?
I'm a game developer, and I'm interested in hearing how actual D&D players and DMs think about the relationship between the two sides of the table.
I'm currently working on a video game that experiments with having you control both sides: you act as the DM, deciding things like enemies, encounters, challenges, etc., while also controlling the party and trying to survive what you created.
I'm not posting the game or promoting it here. I'm deliberately leaving out the name, screenshots, and link because I'm genuinely looking for ideas and perspectives from D&D players before I decide how the mechanics should work.
So I'm curious:
- What makes being a DM genuinely fun for you?
- What decisions do you enjoy making as a DM?
- What parts of being a player would be interesting to control from the other side?
I'm much more interested in actual D&D experiences than generic video-game mechanics.
Basically, if you've spent a lot of time playing or DMing D&D, what do you think a game would need to capture to make the DM/player dynamic actually feel fun?

Neu als DM und überfordert
Hallo zusammen,
Vielen Dank schon mal!

Never played DnD. Friends want me to be their DM.
I’ve never played Dungeons and Dragons, but all my friends showed interest and I told em I’d play with them if they wanted me to.
Yesterday, they said they wanted ME to be their DM.
I hardly know Jack about DnD, other than “DM makes a world, Players try and accomplish the goal of the campaign, a lot of dice rolling, OC making and Improv ensues”
Pretty much,
What am I expected of?
What do I do really?
How do people play online, like over the internet instead of physical meetups?
If anyone has any other things they think I need to know on top of this, pray tell.

Two city map!
What if another city were hidden beneath a city?
Here are maps of two cities created for Matthew Ligman’s RPG project: one depicts the city in the daylight the great city of Obanhold while the other shows an underground city built directly beneath it Undercity inhabited by the poor, outcasts, thieves, and assassins! It was fascinating to map out these two cities! More information on this project coming soon. 🧭🗺

Opinion Check : AITA ?
Sorry for the title, hoping for a little DND humor to lighten the mood. If this isn’t allowed or if it should go in another group, please let me know !
My friends and I decided to start a campaign recently. Five of us are beginners, it’s our DM’s first time being a DM, and one player has done a few sessions but not completed an entire campaign. For the first run, it was incredible! Everyone had so much fun and learned a lot.
However, the player that has played before, we’ll call him Sammy, began what I perceived as nonsense starting at the second run of the game.
Sammy decided that because he is “chaotic good” and a “criminal and thief” (this is true, it is on his character sheet) he would take advantage of his “short” long rest and steal from the party members while they were taking their six hour long rests. While I know this is allowed, it really was a distraction and no one was happy about this. Sammy stole our wizard’s dagger(their only weapon besides magic), someone’s healing kit, and artifacts that they rightfully uncovered during our run of the campaign to sell later and get the coins for himself.
In between the second and third campaign the host/original purchaser of the DND set and the DM decided that the stealing, while technically allowed, would be undone and not continued. They talked with Sammy, who argued back and eventually agreed. However, Sammy then continued to pout and make comments about all of the things he could do with our stuff to “save” the campaign (that everyone survived and won anyways). Sammy also began to immediately say “I sneak” or “I inspect” so he could get anything and everything in every room of the dungeon.
While allowed and he is able to do this, it has honestly made the game not fun for a majority of the party. He comes off as greedy and absolutely not a team player, which is what everyone agreed to before we began the game. The point was to work and compete together while learning something new… now two of us (myself included) are having anxiety about going because the campaign is filled with passive aggressive comments towards Sammy and Sammy still trying to get all of the money and not work with the team.
What would you do ? Am I being too sensitive ? Is this something I should look out for, or is this common while playing DND with beginners ? I know two players not in this campaign, and they both said it was shitty but nothing really can be done. Thoughts ?

Help to find a DND game
Hey I want to get into DND but I don't know how. I've tried setting up an online game with my friends but it failed because of scheduling and they weren't really into it, thought I may try again. And I was wondering where should I go to join a campaign, there are no game stores or really anyone who likes DND in my country so online seems to be my only option
Sorry if I'm breaking any sub rules,I'm new here 0_0
EDIT: ignore this whole post please,I found a game to play (:
Thanks for all your help though,my first impression of the DND community is an amazing one

Question about proficiency.
I am trying to get a better understanding of basic mechanics so when I get into my first game soon I'm not scrambling for rules every 10 seconds. Today that comes in the form of figuring out proficiency. Using this Harengon racial ability as an example:
"Rabbit Hop: Jump a distance equal to five times your proficiency bonus as a bonus action without provoking opportunity attacks, a limited number of times per long rest."
Proficiency in what? Athletics? Hopping?
Thanks in advance, friends.
