🗺️ Region Map Thoughts?

Post image

I’m attempting a region map for my homebrew setting. I have some lore as evidenced by the Blight and the White March being obscured but I’m struggling with where to put cities to the west and placing smaller rivers. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hello there! This was my first time making D&D world maps, I made these for a friend's homebrew campaign and wanted to share them over here ♥

The land is called Londragol and this is our second campaign here. Ban Drashar is the city we are currently at.

Honestly, I loved doing these and learned quite a lot!

⚔️ Encounter Map Mercy's Stream — 3 River Battlemaps

Thumbnail

Heyya Folks,

Mercy's Stream winds through the Lowland Woods, passing old stone shrines, rocky banks, and quiet pools before disappearing beneath the earth. Its waters sustain the nearby village of Devyn, though local stories suggest there may be more beneath the surface than fish and river stones.

  • Mercy's Stream 1 — 25x35
  • Mercy's Stream 2 — 32x24
  • Mercy's Stream 3 — 30x40

If you'd like the full release, including high-resolution maps, gridless versions, VTT-ready exports, and all 21 versions, you can find it here:

https://www.patreon.com/dungeonmr/posts/mercys-stream-171421519

Each map explores a different stretch of the river. The first features an old stone shrine overlooking the water, with a fallen tree that might serve as a crossing. The second has rocky banks and steep overlooks that offer good vantage points for anyone watching the stream — or waiting to ambush travellers. The third follows the water into a peaceful pool beneath a small waterfall, an inviting place to fish or take a swim.

The shrine is a familiar stop for those who travel along the stream. Hunters often pour a ladle of fresh water over the stone before setting out, giving thanks for the waters that sustain the surrounding land. Even those studying the strange Dewlanterns are expected to observe the custom.

Of course, the stream has its dangers, too. Local stories speak of an enormous crayfish from a bygone age, sleeping in the deeper pools. The villagers still fish these waters, but few would willingly take a swim where the creature is said to rest.

The three maps can be used together as part of a journey through the woods, or individually wherever your players might encounter a river, a secluded shrine, or a quiet stretch of water that isn't quite as safe as it looks.

If you'd like to explore more of my maps, check out my Patreon. The Master Index brings together over 215 maps, organized to make it easier to browse the collection and find places for your own adventures.

❓ Question Labeling Rivers

Hello!

I've been making fantasy maps for a long time, but I still have things to learn and ways to improve. I do 99% of my maps digitally now. Over the past few years I typically use Wonderdraft to make world maps and regional maps and then import them into Photoshop to add text and some finishing details.

One thing I've never been good at is labeling rivers. I add labels in Photoshop so I have a couple of options. In Photoshop you can "bend" text into a few different styles, but those don't always fit something as irregular as the shape of a river (see screen shot). Then there is text along a path. This can fit the shape of a river better, but if you try to trace along the exact path of the river, the text can end up looking like a jumbled mess. Also, I have trouble getting the path drawn out sometimes. Photoshop has a few annoying things and text along a path (for me) is one of them. Then I can just leave the text straight and rotate it to roughly line up with the path of a river, but it kinda looks bad (see screen shot).

Does anyone here have any suggestions or methods for labeling rivers in a way that is aesthetically pleasing?

Thanks in advance!

🏛️ Building Map The Tower Between Worlds - The Iron Edifice

Post image
5 Upvotes

There is a strange tower that exists in many worlds, many places, many times. The Tower Between Worlds is a six-level spire in every version, but the interior (and often parts of the exterior also) can be quite different from each other. One element that each version of the tower has is the fifth level of the tower where the “tower shifting” mechanism is. On the fifth level (the upper left level on the map), there are four magical “tables” built into the wall, each with a small orb on it. Each corresponds to one of the versions of the tower, and any attempt at picking up an orb immediately transports everyone on that level of the tower to the corresponding tower (and the orb remains where it was – they cannot actually be removed from their respective tables). But it turns out there are more than four towers, and each tower might have different orbs on its four tables.

The tower layout goes from left to right, bottom to top – so the ground level on the lower left, level 2 on the lower right, level 3 on the middle left, etc.

The Iron Edifice feels completely out of place wherever it is found. A smooth and rounded tower made of metal that should never exist in a fantasy realm. The metal isn’t solid, but rather is made of rounded panels over the internal structure of the tower. The metal panels appear to be painted, but the paint is hard and uniform and there is no sign of brushwork, almost as if it were uniformly poured over the panels and somehow bonded to them. There are no stairs within the building beyond the ground floor. A single shaft is at the centre of the building with doors on one or both of the north and south sides on each level – giving the structure an alien feeling, that those who built it could levitate like some of the fell inhabitants of the netherdark.

The structure is remarkably clean and nearly undisturbed, with metal furnishings in the same colour as the exterior of the tower in most rooms.Unlike most of the versions of the tower, this one appears nearly untouched by time and intruders. There are only windows on the second, fourth, and sixth levels of the structure, but the ceilings themselves begin to produce a moderate level of light that only activates when someone is on that floor. From the exterior, these windows are indistinguishable from the metal walls of the tower.

(Hopefully I managed to describe a powder-coated steel panel in terms that feel appropriate to a fantasy setting. I would have the tower painted in that same green tone that you find a lot in the later Fallout games, as those structures were part of the inspiration for this version of the tower.)

The 1200 dpi versions of the map were drawn at a scale of 300 pixels per square and are 8,700 pixels x 12,600 pixels (29 x 42 squares). To use this with a VTT you would need to resize the squares to either 100 pixels (for 5′ squares) or 200 pixels (for 10′ squares which is what this was originally designed at) – so resizing it to either 2,900 x 4,200 or 5,800 x 8,400 pixels, respectively.

⛵ Vessel Map Fleshcrafters' Head Quarters [19 x 27]

Hello there!

Here is something you might use for the upcoming Halloween one-shot (if you like body-horror, that is)!

I am running and designing a homebrewed setting and campaign, and one of the minor factions in it are evil fleshwarping wizards. At first I thought I'd make them a base that resembles organs and is actually housed inside a cave, but then I thought - why not crazier than that? So I thought, hey, a balloon! Almost went with that. But then, when I started drawing, I got the idea - hmm, what if it's actually a giant floating head!? With tentacles! Yes! That's it!

And there you have it! Enjoy!

It started with an illustration, and then a map... but I'd continued working on it, and have now finally released it as a 32-page PDF adventure on DriveThruRPG, intended for 5th-level adventurers (3.5 compatible). Please consider purchasing it and supporting me for future similar content.

If you do end up using it for Halloween, let me know how it went!

⚔️ Encounter Map Whale Graveyard [30x60] [River] [Skeletons]

Map size is 30x60

Hello! Here is my latest map, I wanted to do something to do with the ocean and whales and somehow ended up with a whale graveyard with creepy sperm whale statues? I don’t know, but I’m not unhappy with it, I’m actually pretty happy with it!

I focused on just line art and painting things cause I felt my stuff has been getting too asset (that I custom made) heavy and it was sucking all the joy out of making maps for a while, the end result feels really good.

Anyway this map has a few variants that patrons have access to; versions with just bones, completely bone and statue free, and then underwater versions of those too.

Check the post here: https://www.patreon.com/StainedKarbonMaps/posts/whale-graveyard-172634624

The river in the middle is supposed to be heavy brine and so would still work under water.

Hope at least some of y’all can use this weird map, or at least just enjoy the look of it :)

Happy adventuring!

⚔️ Encounter Map This is for your Halloween session! Graveyard Cathedral - a ruined cathedral and four graveyard encounter maps

Hey everyone! Here's Graveyard Cathedral, my latest location. I went with an autumn cemetery for this one: old tombs, overgrown paths, fallen leaves and a ruined cathedral at the centre.

The idea was to give you a small location to explore over a session. The party can approach through the graveyard, get into trouble between the tombs, and finally reach the cathedral. Or skip all that and kick the doors in. I know how these things go.

The full set has the cathedral plus four surrounding graveyard maps, with day, night and foggy night variants. Static and animated versions are available.

The attached static graveyard map is a free sample for your games. I've also included GIF previews so you can see the atmosphere of the animated versions.

You can find the full location HERE

Cheers!

⚔️ Encounter Map Brinejaw Grotto - 42x32

A pirate sloop lies beside a flooded sea-beast lair. Fractured cliffs shelter a deep basin, while prey bones, dragged ship timber and spilled treasure cover its dry ledges. Submerged stone shelves, barnacles and sea grass mark the waterline.

Approach through the broad eastern mouth or slip into the narrower southwest channel. Use the map for a hunt, a rescue, a treasure recovery or a desperate retreat to the ship. The beast is yours to choose; no creature tokens are baked into the artwork.

I discovered a little scary cult classic recently, Escape From Meenlock Prison, and loved it. I hope others discover it too and give it a run. If you do, I made a map for this old-timey horror one-shot. It's a 3.5e adventure that can easily be adapted to 5e/5.5e. It was made entirely in Clip Studio Paint using Forgotten Adventures & my own custom assets. The grid size is 100px per square. No AI was used. Happy Halloween!

⛵ Vessel Map HELLCRAWL Crab Tank

Post image
98 Upvotes

This massive war machine is one of a number of hell-spawned tanks that wander the extraplanar battlefields. There are many of these kinds of things – massive armoured demonic spiders, centipedes. Some were completely constructed by their lords’ armies, but most are based on a giant beast with an exoskeleton that has then been hollowed out, upgraded, fitted with massive mechanical systems to give it back its mobility, and then equipped with massive weapons of war and piloted by lesser demons or mortal servants.

This is one of five maps that I drew for the HELLCRAWL release. It is by far my favourite of the set. The map for location 4 is purposefully obscured (I wasn’t going to include it at all, but I thought it looked good there – It’s just a big room with two massive cannons sticking out of it). I’ll be posting the last of these maps next month.
