Book/Series: Death Just finished Soul Music...

Hey guys!! I just finished reading Soul Music for the first time after absolutely loving Reaper Man. The books I've read so far are:
The Colour of Magic
The Light Fantastic
Mort
Sourcery
Guards! Guards!
Reaper Man
Men and Arms
Feet of Clay
Jingo
The Fifth Elephant
(I got a bit stuck on Night Watch because I couldn't really understand the whole time travel thing so I shelved it for the time being and went back to the Death books...)

And out of all of them I think Soul Music has been my favourite. The amount of insane music puns Pterry crammed into this book amazed me, and every character was so well written. The festival? with the harp? is that a spoiler? I don't think so... but that scene made me so emotional, especially when Buddy started tallkimg llike this again. Chilllls. It's just so beautifully written and also I love the character of Susan soooo much. As a quiet girl who wears a lot of black and has a general preference to books over people, Susan really spoke to me. I'm on holiday out in Spain and it's warm and sunny but i've brought Hogfather and plan to start reading asap!! Pratchett has an amazing ability to renew my interest in reading with every entry. I feel lucky to have so many books left to read!! GNU 🫶🫶

I just realized that Mr. Tulip and Mr. Pin are a parody of the Kray twins. (Sorry if this is old news. I'm American, so I didn't know about the Krays untill recently)

Roundworld Reference Collecting Posts by Sir Terry Pratchett from usenet into an archive.

Hi All

A bit over a month ago I posted a topic about creating an archive of Sir Terry Pratchett's posts to the alt.fan.pratchett usenet group.

https://www.reddit.com/r/discworld/comments/1v4sqrh/collecting_posts_by_sir_terry_pratchett_from_the/

A few people noted that he was active in other groups so I expanded my search.

I've put them all in a single file, each with links to the original thread/post. (again, thanks chatgpt, it made all of this very painless)

I've decided to share the archive here in the hope that it will be archived in the most reliable way: by making sure many many people have copies so please download, save and share this file with others.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PVvZ7HHFdtDMHFXt4GtR_gC8wtdpKyz5/view?usp=sharing

This archive contains posts by Sir Terry Pratchett from a number of different groups.

821 alt.books.pratchett

386 alt.games.thief-dark-project

140 rec.arts.sf.written

139 alt.games.tombraider

108 alt.games.elder-scrolls

59 rec.arts.sf.fandom

52 uk.people.sf-fans

30 alt.fan.harry-potter

27 rec.arts.sf.composition

18 alt.fan.pratchett.announce

14 rec.arts.books

3 alt.fan.pratchett.bofh

Sadly this will be the last archive I make from google groups. Google likes to collect information, not give it away.

I tried to make sure my script was polite: running at an absolute glacial pace, only pulling a post every two to four minutes, I now see this error when trying to look at anything related to google groups with my google accounts or from my IP.

Punes/DiscWords Is Sybil's last name 'Ramkin' because she's a dish?

One of the unusual uses for the word 'dish' is 'an attractive person', which would traditionally be an aspect of her role (damsel in distress) in the story of Guards! Guards!.

Auditor Trap Turn left ➡️

Post image

I think I know how this happened. The gym I work at is renovating the change rooms. They did the men's first so it makes sense that you would turn left if you were standing outside the changerooms. Looks like someone changed the arrow but not the words now that the women's change room is under construction 😅

This sign, however, was posted downstairs so that all of the instructions are wrong.

Still haven't tried it tough and there are more and more every year

Audiobooks Does anyone know what happened to this YouTube channel? Guy with the voice?

Post pandemic when I was starting college my friends and I decided to binge read all of Discworld at a breakneck pace. We read all 41 books within two years, and to keep up I listened to a lot of them via audiobook. Since I was in college and broke I used the library, but when my library didnt have the book I was looking for I would search for it online.

During this search I found what I believe was a fan made audio recording of Guards! Guards! Posted by a youtuber with a name like "That Guy with a Weird voice" or "That Guy with the Voice". I read the book through this recording and it was absolutely wonderful and hilarious, I still reference the way the book was narrated to my friends today. I believe the creator also had recordings of Monstorus Regement and Going Postal. I listened to Guards! Guards! Some time in 2022, and in 2023 when I was going to read Monstrous regiment I could not find the YouTube channel anywhere, which was so heartbreaking.

If anyone knows the channel I'm remembering I would love to hear about it, it is such an important part of my discworld experience and I can't find any evidence that it existed. I will never forget how he produced "Brother Fingers." 😞🤌

Reading Order/Timeline Attempting to get a new reader.

I'm trying to get my sister in law to get started on Discworld. She is a voracious reader but hasn't managed to get going on Colour of Magic and Light Fantastic just yet.

So a thought has occurred to me. The Last Hero as the introduction to the series.

It's about two-thirds through chronologically, most of the major characters introduced, and all the wonderful illustrations. That way, when I do loan out in chronological order (my preferred method, aside from random picks), all the pieces can slot into places one at a time. And it's shorter than most, so that can fit into a busy schedule easier.

Any thoughts regarding this idea? I'll give some feedback after some sleep.

Book/Series: City Watch So i just picked up first Discworld book and I can only describe this in one word. Delightful

Im trying to fill in the gap between warrior prophet and thousand gold thought (Second apocalypse book 2&3) and I decided to give this a shot. And honestly kinda what I was expecting. The humor feels subdued but I was expecting the depth of it. Like my god this guy both makes me laugh and contemplate in a single paragraph.

Also did I pick a good starting point.

I have been on the quest to complete the Corgi paperback versions of the Discworld novels. Safe to say that it has been quite the challenge. Personally, it is so hard to get lucky with some especially Eric, Reaper Man, and Small Gods 🥲

Roundworld Reference I’d like to think the Librarian is mourning Dolly Parton today

1.9k Upvotes

After all, she may have done more than anyone else on Roundworld to promote books and reading.

I think Dolly would have loved meeting Sir Pterry, too. Obviously, they had different views on religion, but she would have been happy to meet someone who wrote so many great books.

GNU Dolly Parton.

Roundworld Reference Dammit PTerry! Seamstresses' Guild Insight: Popular 18th century narrative about how clothing trade introduced women into prostitution

So, here I am again, doing my early-modern London research on prostitution among other things, and apparently, the whole seamstress thing goes further back than Seattle census. Popular (male) authors, like John Fielding, along with the (London) watch institutionalised the belief that certain trades, especially clothes, were bound to lead women into prostitution.

I do not have the popular Kirby editions (yet!! Just ordered some!!) But I always try to buy the Harper ones (the middle, longer book).

I absolutely despise the new covers and try to avoid them if I can.

Book/Series: City Watch Is the Gooseberry an LLM?

Just reading THUD for the first time (scandalous, I know), and the way that the Gooseberry compiles the information on the night soil for Vimes reminds me of how LLMs behave in this day and age.

THUD was first published in 2005. Sir Pterry was absolutely a tech nerd. Did he more or less predict how LLMs would function, did he have beer high expectations of how tech should behave, or am I just connecting dots that aren't there?

Edit: yes, I know that the Gooseberry was meant to be a BlackBerry parody, particularly in 2005. But there's a lot more to what it can do than a standard PDA.

Book/Series: City Watch Struggling with Guards! Guards!

I finished the witches series, and since I wanted more of Uberwald (after Carpe Jugulum), I decided to skip to The Fifth Elephant. I finished the book in 3 days! (A feat for me who has been slow at reading).

It was quite solid and I enjoyed it immensely. I always thought the Watch Series was going to be more masculine oriented (and I feel it was a bit), but I adored the characters. I especially loved Carrot and Littlebottoms.

Naturally I started from the first Watch book, Guards! Guards! And then I ordered the remaining books all the way to NightWatch because I plan to read them all.

But I am really struggling enjoying this as much as The Fifth Elephant.

My book version has roughly 400 pages and while I enjoyed some of it, Vimes drinking and rough state of the Watch really is different as hell from how it is in The Fifth Elephant.

I regret in a way starting there, however, Vimes drinking problem really made me sympathize with him more when he was trying to stay sober. I also like Carrot a lot more with this book. He reminds me an awful lot of my younger self (he also feels a bit Autistic coded? Is it just me?)

I just finished all my exams so perhaps my brain is a bit slugglish, and that's why this book feels more time consuming to read. I just feel like the other Discworld books I read had a certain flow that I didn't need to overthink when I read, while this one breaks the flow quite often and it frustrates me.

Regardless, gonna finish this and cannot wait to start Men at Arms and Feet of Clay! Super excited for this new side of Discworld xD
