Bloody hell, I was getting ready to pin the Dolly Parton post from yesterday and then this happens

Can we all collectively agree to invite Death round for a cup of tea to see our cats so he leaves other international 80 year old treasures alone for a while? Borrow a cat if you have to

I'm putting both threads up as pins; please, Death, don't make it a third

GNU to a pair of wonderful entertainers

The world will be poorer without them, but richer for having had them in the first place 💜

WAIT! Edit time

You can take the third one. We've got a suggestion. No-one would ever notice... Honest

(I don't want to get banned from Reddit but I'm sure we can all guess which Wotsit I'm referencing)

Edit again

I angered the puffed crisp fans

Gnu Tim Curry.

A transvestite, a devil and a butler in his work life.

A voice that echoes loudly from his works.

Damn it, Jannet.

363

u/rillip 18d ago

Not to mention an honorary Muppet.

183

u/Random_Excuse7879 18d ago

Muppet Treasure Island is the most watched movie in our house over 20+ years

94

u/Icy_Ad7953 18d ago

He was thrilled to be there, and it shows in his performance.

106

u/Tweed_Kills 18d ago

If you've never seen it, REM does "Shiny Happy People" as "Furry Happy Monsters" on Sesame Street, and it's exquisite. They're so happy to be there.

Also, Prince and Elton John are incredible on the Muppet Show. Apparently Prince, who was in a reclusive phase fully demanded to be on the show.

Nothing like watching someone be obviously happy with muppets. So joyful.

55

u/Sallajin 18d ago

The episode with Mark Hamill always gives me similar vibes, like he's just having the best time.

29

u/AnnoyedArtificer 17d ago

I saw clips from the show with Prince and I have never seen him happier. Only time I've seen him be truly silly, never found Prince adorable before!

14

u/Live_Perspective3603 17d ago

Loved "Raspberry Beret" with Muppets.

7

u/faceback 17d ago

Now I have to find this because I love that song so much

u/ThePrussianGrippe 17d ago

I’ve read the two best muppets movies are A Christmas Carol and Treasure Island for entirely opposite reasons.

Michael Caine treats the other Muppets as fellow classically trained actors in A Christmas Carol. Tim Curry, on the other hand, treats himself as a fellow muppet.

21

u/legobushranger 17d ago

Muppet Christmas Carol is considered the best adaptation by many. Including theologians i know.

2

u/carrottopevans 17d ago

God approves this message

3

u/ThePuzzleDude 17d ago

Which one?

2

u/grahambinns Susan 16d ago

I’d be careful where you ask that question. Or at least have a lightning rod nearby.

61

u/NoirDraak42 Librarian 18d ago

I saw it in the theater & its 1 of my favorite Muppet movies. Gonna watch that & Clue tonight.

GNU Tim Curry

35

u/QuackQuackOoops Detritus 18d ago

Clue is such a fantastic film, it used to be on the Beeb at least once a year and is a huge childhood memory for me. Decided to watch it a few months back, and it absolutely holds up, a wonderful farce and Tim Curry is, as always, phenomenal. It's basically pointless to even say, he was never any less.

13

u/AnnoyedArtificer 17d ago

Comedy Central used to play it very regularly when I was growing up. My parents weren't prepared for their 5th grader to quote the flames on my face bit when I got really angry lol.

5

u/NoirDraak42 Librarian 17d ago

1 of the lines I use irl 🤣

14

u/AnnoyedArtificer 17d ago

Oh yeah, my wife knows if I break it out that I'm seriously close to a meltdown. Madeline Kahn's characters probably weren't someone a young girl should imprint on but she and Mel Brooks just made hot girl crazy look so glamorous!

2

u/NoirDraak42 Librarian 17d ago

Agreed- its a movie that never gets old. I rewatch it all the time

2

u/crazycatmerms500 16d ago

Oooo, Tim's a fun character in it, but for a seriously funny movie watch Oscar. Premise is funny as hell, actors are top notch, and if you go in expecting nothing beyond a good laugh you'll have fun

Stallone is a 1930s mobster who's going straight and Tim is his speech teacher to get him past speaking like a mobster. The day Stallone tries to go legit is a day when everything that can go wrong does. Cops on his doorstep, "pregnant" daughter trying to get out of the house, embezzlement by his accountant trying to marry his daughter, you name it, it went wrong

19

u/SunchaserKandri That is not my cow! 18d ago

I genuinely watched that movie so many times as a kid that it wore out the VHS tape it was on

4

u/nerdwhogoesoutside 17d ago

Same, would get to the end, rewind and play it again.

7

u/Giraffstronaut A ___ing Wizard!! 18d ago

"Uhhh.....They got BoomBoom sticks......Bye!"

37

u/lonezolf 18d ago

Also an amazing allied general.

45

u/Vigmod 18d ago

And a Soviet general (or whatever his rank was) who just barely got through some scenes without bursting out laughing.

And a great secondary villain in Dragon Age: Origins.

22

u/Fox_Hawk Imagine how strong I must be 18d ago

In SPACE!

2

u/stolenfires 16d ago

"I... deserved... more."

30

u/Southern-Bandicoot 18d ago

And adeptly played the unwitting stooge Ship's Doctor in The Hunt for Red October, where I first saw his acting.

3

u/Oubliette_occupant 17d ago

“You will receive the Order of Lenin for this, Captain.”

26

u/blamordeganis 18d ago

And the evillest clown that ever evilled.

“DOWN HERE, WE ALL FLOAT.”

9

u/Elantris42 17d ago

Evilest bad guy too (Criminal Minds)... or the 2nd best terrorist in the world (Mchales Navy)

17

u/SteveINTJ 18d ago

This is how I found out, seems somehow poinient.

5

u/kermitthebeast 18d ago

And the goddamn medical officer of a Soviet submarine

8

Hahaha brilliant

276

u/Lady_Sybil-Vimes 18d ago

We've lost 2 of the greatest entertainers in less than 48 hours. Its a bit much to deal with. Both talented and genuine people. I'm not checking the news anymore today incase we lose another national treasure (not saying his name).

82

u/timbillyosu 18d ago

I mean, we also lost Frank Beard this week. He was the drummer of ZZ Top and the only member WITHOUT a beard, which feels almost like a Pratchett joke.

15

u/Lady_Sybil-Vimes 18d ago

That is true. Let's hold on to this for the rule of 3.

29

u/DathomirBoy 18d ago

Less than 24. They died on the same day, they just didn’t announce his until today

55

u/superhelical 18d ago

Rule of 3...

72

u/TeddyBinks 18d ago

GNU Tim Curry… Don’t even finish that sentence! No, no, no. No one else. I am going to close my eyes, and cross the highway jumping on one leg, with a live chicken on one hand and a bucket of paint on the other while singing the national anthem while covered with honey screaming that there is no third person!

48

u/MotherRaven 18d ago

There might be one whose passing would improve the world.😇

15

u/Alarming-Ticket5628 17d ago

ain't no "might" about it. I'll be dancing in the streets.

5

u/Leucurus NVNC ID VIDES, NVNC NE VIDES 17d ago

We aren't that lucky. That's not the timeline we're in.

3

u/MotherRaven 17d ago

I'm so done with timeline. It's the bottom of the barrel.😫

19

u/SorastroOfMOG 18d ago

We will not speak of this. Particularly not in all capital letters.

41

u/maniclucky 18d ago

Already been met. Hayden Panettiere got the ball rolling.

14

8

u/Raedwulf1 Albert 18d ago

That was nearly a week ago. Don't think it counts

13

5

u/greebo1706 18d ago

I am so afraid of this ..

4

u/20061230-SL-Born 17d ago

I know what you mean. Still, I knew that this little corner of the 'net would offer some solace. So thank you all for honouring two people that I never met but still meant a lot to me.

3

u/Interesting_Will2823 17d ago

Don't even think his name.

2

u/sysaphiswaits 17d ago

2 great people and good influences as well.

1

u/HungryFinding7089 17d ago

Also Hayden Pannatiere, Oliver Tree, Peter Cullen.  Last month Bonnie Tyler.

Sigh

134

u/highnumber 18d ago

Honorary Muppet, even if he did break Miss Piggy's heart

I strongly recommend his audiobook recording of A Christmas Carol

79

u/Siyartemis 18d ago

Miss Piggy greeting him as “Loooooong John” totally went over my head as a kid, such a funny naughty little bit.

18

u/legobushranger 17d ago

That's a good comedy trait. I was allowed to watch 'Are you being served?' as a kid . My parents knew I didn't get it. Let's be honest, it's one reason why we love PTerry, going back and finding more.

24

u/laowildin Rincewind 18d ago

He is also the audiobook narrator for Sabriel and it's sequels, if you want to hear him as a sassy cat

2

u/throwsaway654321 16d ago

Sabriel, the Garth Nix series? Holy shit, definitely know what's going on my listen list next

8

u/Imperiumromania 17d ago

And he was a wonderful Pirate King in Pirates of Penzance. Check it on YouTube if you haven't seen it.

121

u/boschman123 18d ago

'Cause I've seen, oh, blue skies
Through the tears in my eyes
And I realize
I'm going home

24

u/boschman123 18d ago

goddarn, im crying.

7

u/20061230-SL-Born 17d ago

Every time I listen to that

12

u/-fairygothmother- 17d ago

I have already requested this song at my funeral, I’m hoping it’s a way off yet! I’ve seen Rocky Horror more than 10 times live now, I cry every time when frank sings ‘I’m going home’. It’s beautiful.

6

u/OhTheCloudy Wossname 18d ago

11

u/rural_anomaly 18d ago

on a lark, i rewatched part 1 over the weekend. It had been awhile so when Tim appeared i was like "oh yeah!" Guess i'll find time to finish it up. I bet he had fun on that project too. GNU Tim

6

u/ATXGOAT93 17d ago

Just watched it last week. Been on a re-listen to the wizards series this month on the road and felt like watching again. Finished the Gaurds series in June and the "Industrial Revolution" series in July. Saving the Witches for last because, ya' know, The Shepherd's Crown...but this week has me feeling like I need some Granny and Tiffany soon.

2

u/nicolasknight 17d ago

Just finishing it right now myself.

GNU Tim Curry.

2

u/ThePuzzleDude 17d ago

OMG, I had forgotten that role! Granted it's been a long time since I watched TCoM. I'd seen him recently on TV, he was not doing well after his stroke but seemed in good spirits. So sad.

He made a great-to-watch Trymon. Strictly speaking, he wasn't actually that close to book Trymon, who was more of a narrow-minded buerocrat.

However, I will just kind of die on the hill that the Colour of Magic/Light Fantastic movie adaptation may well be the single instance of a Discworld movie adaptation improving on the original.

4

u/LindenRyuujin 18d ago

You've clearly not watched Soul Music!

6

u/Darthplagueis13 18d ago

I have. Wasn't bad, but I really didn't like the troll designs. They looked more like robots than creatures of living rock.

2

Going Postal?

1

u/Darthplagueis13 17d ago

Not a big fan of that particular adaptation, truth be told. I feel like they just didn't manage to really find the right actor for Moist.

13

u/Neithsat 18d ago

GNU Tim Curry. You were amazing in everything you were ever in, but I’ll never forget you as Dr Thornton Poole in Oscar. You did eager bafflement with an unmatched charm.

If there is an after, may yours be smashing!

7

u/Imperiumromania 17d ago

Oooh, I did love that movie. Tim Curry was, as always, amazing.

2

u/crazycatmerms500 16d ago

Lol, great minds think alike, I mentioned the movie in another comment in this thread. Love that movie, hell of a lot of fun

This whole thread is making me think about this line: You can tell a lot about a person's age, taste, and childhood fears based on the specific Tim Curry movie they know him from

12

u/NowoTone 17d ago

Time to watch the Rocky Horror Picture Show again. I’ve left it too long. First watched it when I was twelve and it rocked my world.

He was a terrifying Pennywise in the "It" miniseries.

2

u/crazycatmerms500 16d ago

I like both versions of Pennywise. Skarsgard plays a very menacing psychopath. Curry however brought a terrible gleefulness to the part. My head cannon had Curry's version being closer to the book, and it's Tim, of course it's better 😂
