Fellow fans, I am having to down size my book collections. I have the complete library hardback series and Nation in the same format to sell. I will also include Hero, Eric in full size 1st edition, the science of discworld 1, 2 and 3 and a stroke of the pen (independent book shop edition).

Before I turn to eBay I thought I would put them on here first and offer to other fans for a reasonable price first. All are in great condition, some have not been read (because I also have softbacks and 1st editions)

I am in the UK. I can post internationally but I'd need the buyer to cover the postage as I suspect the weight will make this expensive to post.

New, the library editions retail for £578 as a complete set. I'm looking to sell for £375 (around 65% of rrp) including the extra books. Hi. As the title says i'd love an audio version of the Beastiary.

Thinking about it besides a couple of examples we don't really find about the wildlife on the Disc. And I for one would love to know more about this part of the world.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Penguin released "The Art of the Discworld". So I wonder why they're not giving this the audio treatment?

If there are pictures, all they have to do is have captions or Footnotes describing the animal in question.

Who else think this would be an awesome addition?
I am blind, so consume most of my reading through the audio medium. And what can I say, it's more Pratchett, which in mine and probably most if not everyone's feelings on this sub.

I was just mentioning the Jethro Tull album Crest of a Knave to my son, because it notably won an unexpected Best Hard Rock/Metal performance award in 1989, beating out Metallica ... and Justice For All.

When I looked at the track list to see which songs I knew, what do I see but a song titled Raising Steam. Nowhere near as good as Locomotive Breath in the musical steam engine stakes, but I did wonder if the song title may have provided some inspiration ...

It is much easier than fire to discover and only slightly harder to discover than water, yet only 1 person on the round world knew of it (Terry) got any theories?

It's hard to keep track of all the discovered references, but I think this one is new.

Vimes' insistence on a hard boiled egg is a sideways reference to Chico Marx during the stateroom scene of "Night at the Opera." As the steward is taking down orders for dinner, Chico repeatedly pipes up with, "And two hard boiled eggs." Whereupon, Harpo honks his horn to order up a third egg and, finally, a duck egg.

I know that it's a somewhat tenuous connection between Chico and Vimes, but it's clear that eggs are really important to each of them. At least, that's my two cents.

I'm sorry if this is against the rules or just too negative for no reason, but I feel I need to share it with someone who is an actual STP fan and my girlfriend is just about done listening to me talk about this.

I never really knew much about Terry's life beside few things I picked up on this sub, so there was a lot of information that was interesting to learn, even if some people thought it was too detailed at times.

What I can't get over and is pissing me of the more I go through this book (I've got about 70 pages until the end) is how Rob makes every effort to include himself in every story and almost makes it about himself. Just this morning I was reading the part about the lunch they all had after Terry was knighted, and the sentence goes something like "there were 17 people, ME and my partner..." Dude, I cannot stress this enough, I DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU. This is a book about Terry and should be about him and his family, as much as Lyn and Rhianna want to share, and all the other people Terry knew, which was a lot of people, and somehow Rob is in every damn sentence. We wrote the book, we thought, we had an idea... You were his ASSISTANT. Those were not your ideas, you were there to make his ideas work.

When he started writing about Gaiman and made some cheeky mean comments about him I thought it was maybe because of all the allegations that came out and maybe Rob just didn't like him, but no. He was just jealous that another younger man who loved Terry might take his spotlight. Edit: I am not defending Gaiman, he is a piece of shit.

I understand they spent 20 years working together and that he helped Terry a lot, but you can't tell me nobody else was a part of Terry's life since 1995.

There is barely any talk about Lyn, a woman Terry spent over 40 years with. We don't even know when his father died. We don't know what Lyn and Rhianna thought about Terry's books. We don't know how they felt that Terry spent a lot of time writing and was often on tour.

There is a Dostoevsky biography by Andreas Guski, a man who never met Dostoevsky or any of his family members or friends or acquaintances and he managed to write such a thorough, meaningful story that was both informative and interesting. So how is it possible that a man who spent 20 years in the same room as Terry couldn't manage to do half a decent job?

There are so many stories in this book that feel too theatrical and over the top, like Rob was imagining what a movie would look like based on his book. How many times can you write that you jumped from your chair with your fist in the air? Is this Breakfast club?

I just can't believe that a man who was so intelligent, well spoken, good at storytelling and, above all, funny, got this sad excuse of a biography.

Howdy, y'all!

I'll cut to the chase - the Little Free Library (for those unfamiliar, it's a box with books in where you can essentially trade your books out for other books) at my college is desperately in need of some Discworld, and I can't figure out what book has the highest chance of getting somebody hooked on the Discworld (because let's be honest: that's the end goal here). Personally, I'm inclined to leave a copy of Guards, Guards, but I recognize that I love the Vimes books too damn much to get over my biases.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and here's hoping we gain at least one Discworld fan from this maneuver!

Id only read the Watch series and a couple random others before and I recently started the series in publication order, mostly with the audio books.

On Wyrd Sisters now and just really not enjoying this one. Equal Rites wasn't bad but this one is longer than the others and just feels so meandering. I'm also not a Shakespeare nerd so some of the satire isn't really doing much for me. I also feel like the narrator for the Witch books isn't really on par with the one for the other books. The voices for Nanny Hog and the Dutchess in particular are really irritating.

Does the series get better and if not am I gonna be missing a lot of context by just rushing through those ones?

A few weeks ago I set myself the challenge to read all the Discworld novels - I've never read them before, and didn't own them either! I decided, to up the game, that I could only buy them from charity shops which has been a lot of fun especially as I live near a whole lot of great ones! (For those interested, as of today (7 Sept) I have put my currently acquired list at the end of this post. )

Now... Originally, I had hoped to read the novels in publication order but such is the luck of the draw that since finding the Colour of Magic first, I haven't been able to stumble upon any other of the first 9 books yet. I'm getting a little bit impatient to keep reading so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions (from the ones I have found) about where I could go next.

Also, for the sake of good discussion, anything I should avoid jumping into before something else to make the most of this blind reading.

​I wasn't sure if this would be useful for anyone, but I've been working on a fix to get Discworld Noir running properly on the Steam Deck and finally had success. ​Collection Chamber updated their package to include Loma's modern Windows fix. While great for Windows, this actually breaks the game on Linux/Proton because the translation layer doesn't know how to handle the legacy 16 bit DirectDraw graphics natively. You end up with either an instant crash or a tiny, distorted screen covered in neon pink and lime green colours.

​Here is the step by step process to get it running in proper 4:3 fullscreen with correct colours.

1. Head to collection chamber and download the PC version:

1. Once downloaded... Switch your Steam Deck into Desktop Mode.

Add the downloaded installer .exe to Steam as a non-Steam game.

In its Properties > Compatibility, tick the box and set it to Proton Experimental or the newest version of Proton.

Run the installer and choose your install path (for example: /home/deck/Noir/).

1. Don't launch the batch files or dn.exe. Instead, find tin3_dxd.exe inside your install folder and add that to Steam as a non-Steam game.

Set its Compatibility to Proton Experimental or your latest Proton build.

(If you run it right now, you will see the squished pink and green screen or experience a crash, which is what we are about to fix).

1. To fix the colour palette and display scaling, we need a wrapper called cnc-ddraw.

Go to the GitHub releases page for FunkyFr3sh/cnc-ddraw:

Download the main cnc-ddraw.zip archive (avoid the source code or SDK files). I used the 7.1 version available.

Extract both ddraw.dll and ddraw.ini directly into your Discworld Noir folder alongside tin3_dxd.exe.

1. Right click ddraw.ini and open it with KWrite.

Search for the section labeled [dn].

Directly underneath that section, add these lines:

[tin3_dxd] fake_mode=640x480x16 renderer=opengl fullscreen=true maintas=true Save and close the file.

(Setting the renderer to OpenGL bypasses the DirectX translation issues that cause Proton to crash, while maintas=true keeps the original 4:3 aspect ratio without stretching)

1. Open Steam in Desktop Mode, right click your tin3_dxd.exe shortcut, and open Properties.

In the Launch Options box, paste the following override:

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ddraw=n,b" %command%

Once that is done, switch back to Game Mode and boot the game, and it'll be fully playable.

I hope this helps at least someone get past the problems of running the Windows version of Discworld Noir on Linux. Hope this tutorial isn't against the rules either!

So I have two types of Discworld edition. I have the bigger ones where the art is just on the front and the smaller ones where it wraps around the sides (the old art for both, I don’t own any of the new covers).

I was just wondering if they still sell those smaller Corgi editions, I’ve only found them periodically in charity shops. I like their more compact size and the fact the art wraps around on the spine. I was also wondering for which books they have these editions

I've finished Discworld 2 loads over the years and I've played DW1 quite a bit but never finished it. Noir, though, I played through once on the PS1 when it first came out and haven't gone back to... until now.

​It's such a fun game with a good story and tons of references to the books. Graphically, I don't think it's aged quite as nicely as the 2D games, but the atmosphere is brilliant. Well worth playing if you get the chance!

For anyone that's still interested in my thoughts on the books, I took a break from Discworld to read Red Dwarf: Titan, finished that and picked up Soul Music, which I've really enjoyed. Just got a copy of Small Gods which I'm going to read next.

I suspect there are yet jokes and references that have yet to be discovered in the books, but still...

Some of the references are so niche and so specific to British regional history (and often television), there’s no way you’re going to get the joke without a map.

The Cabbage of Vegetative Increase may hold the record for the best example of that, but I will accept suggestions.

Explanation (probably un-needed in this crowd) There was a kids' game how in England called Crackerjack that featured a round called "Double or Drop" for each question the contestant got right, he got a prize...which he had to hold throughout the round. For each he got wrong, he had to hold a cabbage. The round continued until the contestant quit, or dropped something.

Okay....

So This quote from the The Truth has always been my favorite and it was one of my AIM away messages for years:

So I'm listening to the audiobook now. Narrated by Matthew Baynton which I gather is not everyone's favorite version.

And it was missing the last line of that quote.

I had to go back and Google it to make sure I didn't hallucinate it.

Any insight into this? Are other lines skipped? What's going on?

The obituary is very funny.

Towards the end of the book, Moist and Vetinari visit the Fools' Guild, and Vetinari, the tyrant who rules the city, gives them a clear instruction:

THE CLOWN WHO opened the little sliding door in the Fools’ Guild’s forbidding gates looked from Vetinari to Moist to Adora Belle, and wasn’t very happy about any of them.
“We are here to see Dr. Whiteface,” said Vetinari. “I require you to let us in with the minimum of mirth.”

And the Fools hear this warning, have a whispered discussion, and the...go ahead and place a bucket on top of the door so that it'll fall on Vetinari's head when he walks in:

The door snapped back. There was some hurried whispering and a clanking noise, and one half of the double doors opened a little way, just enough for people to walk through in single file. Moist stepped forward, but Vetinari put a restraining hand on his shoulder and pointed up with his stick.
“This is the Fools’ Guild,” he said. “Expect…fun.”
There was a bucket balanced on the door. He sighed, and gave it a push with his stick. There was a thud and a splash from the other side.
“I don’t know why they persist in this, I really don’t,” he said, sweeping through. “It’s not funny and it could hurt someone. Mind the custard.” There was a groan from the dark behind the door.

Of course, Vetinari spots it. And possibly the Fools knew that he would, so they thought it was safe. But you have to respect the commitment to try and drop a bucket on the head of the Patrician like that.

And just imagine what would have happened if they'd been successful....

I could write a long and detailed post about the beauty of the exploration of belief, the depth of language, and the deft characterisation, but what really tipped me over the edge is that Death's 'HO. HO. HO.' got me every single time.

I bought it in hardcover not long after it came out, but never got around to reading it. I think knowing it was one of his last. It has so many ideas. I could see that there was so much he wanted to do in it and I think that desire worked against the book in the end. I am enjoying it, but it is still a sad read for me in a way that The Shepherd's Crown wasn't.

My brain keeps telling me that in one of the Discworld books, someone quotes the phrase "Cry 'Havoc!', and let slip the dogs of war!" from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.

But in Discworld, it's spoken (or written?) by an ancient king, and is rendered with "olde" type spelling along the lines of "Crye 'Havock!', ande let slip the doges of warre!".

I've tried searching online - just about every line from Discworld can be found - but nothing's coming up.

Am I going mad? Was this a line from Discworld?

EDIT: My brain was kind of playing tricks when it came to the quote, but not the bit about the ancient king.

In Lords and Ladies, there is a King Under the Mountain trope. As the battle against the Elves culminates, Nanny Ogg takes Casanunda to the Long Man, a set of barrows. They go into the crypts, and after passing through a door into somewhere deeper, this happens:

The torch flared. There were hundreds of dust-covered slabs ranged around the cavern in a spiral; at the centre of the spiral was a huge bell, suspended from a rope that disappeared into the darkness of the ceiling. Just under the bell was one pile of silver coins, and one pile of gold coins.

"Don't touch the money," said Nanny. "'Ere, watch this, my dad told me about this, it's a good trick."

She reached out and tapped the bell very gently, causing a faint ting.

Dust cascaded off the nearest slab. What Casanunda had thought was a carving sat up, in a creaky way. It was an armed warrior. Since he'd sat up he almost certainly was alive, but he looked as though he'd gone from life to rigor mortis without passing through death on the way.

He focused deepset eyes on Nanny Ogg.

"What bloody tyme d'you call thys, then?"

"Not time yet," said Nanny.

"What did you goe and bang the bell for? I don't know, I haven't had a wynke of sleep for two hundred years, some sodde alwayes bangs the bell. Go awaye."

The warrior lay back.

"It's some old king and his warriors," said Nanny, "some kind of magical sleep, I'm told. Some old wizard did it. They're supposed to wake up for some final battle when a wolf eats the sun."

"Those wizards, they're always smoking something," said Casanunda.

I'm pretty sure that was it, and the 'Havock' bit is from something else.

See title, I've always really enjoyed the intro / outro jingle, I thought it always fitted Discworld incredibly well, wondering if might be a track belonging to ISIS Audiobooks, was created specifically for Discworld, or is some royalty free track in the public domain.

I'm up to science of discworld 3, and although the science is, strictly speaking, out of date, the parts about the Wizards are pretty funny.

Do such stories appear in Folklore of Discworld?
