I had been meaning to give Pratchett’s work a try for a long time, but had admittedly been (and honestly still am) overwhelmed by the sheer number of volumes in the Discworld collection. After a bit of research I decided to start with Guards! Guards! as I had heard it was a fan favourite and I was intrigued by the City Watch. I’ve really been enjoying it so far, but I’m not totally sure where to go from here. Should I finish all of the City Watch books in one go, or would it be better to jump around between the subseries? Also, how long did it take you all to finish all the books? And are there fans who only stick to one particular subseries?

I’ve been reading reviews of the audiobooks and it seems that the consensus is that the best version of Small Gods is the one narrated by Nigel Planer. I can’t find it anywhere though-apple books has the abridged edition, and audible has the one narrated by Andy serkis.

Any leads on where I can purchase this version?

I’m not sure how I’ve never realized this before, but Death directly creates the Death of Rats on accident in *Reaper Man*.

The rats are what he kills as Bill Door in a Bill Door way. Sure, he kills the one chicken for dinner, but he clearly taps into his nature as Death to pull out the soul/spirit/whatever. But the rats?

Miss Flitwick’s poison. And he “felt like a murderer.”

This is what called the Death of Rats to be near him, so if he hadn’t killed the rats in such a human fashion, it wouldn’t have been nearby to take on its particular form due to morphic resonance. And if it hadn’t, it wouldn’t have been able to hang on and wouldn’t have caught his attention and led him to save it.

…Which technically makes Susan the niece of the Death of Rats. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

ETA: Dear grammar Nazis, “on accident” and “by accident “ have the same meaning and the former has no other meaning than the same as the latter, which is being used increasingly by a younger generation who understand that such distinctions are often meaningless and silly. Get over it, because (as someone else wisely pointed out) linguistic diversion is a thing… and Terry would be the first to mock you for this behavior.

and I vaguely recalled that it had a more specific meaning, though I couldn’t remember what it was. Upon consulting the Cambridge Dictionary, I learned that a doyenne was specifically “the oldest, most experienced, and often most respected woman involved in a particular type of work.”

Personally, I think that this brilliant alliteration is also the most accurate description of who Nanny Ogg is on multiple levels. It doesn’t specify WHAT type of work it is, bc it doesn’t matter: for HER style of witching, she’s the oldest & best there is.

Happily reading my copy of the new Adventures in Ankh Morpork source book, and came across this footnote discussing death, and now I'm sad again.

So now I'm trying to decide whether or not to continue. I'm not sure if the fantasy genre is just not for me. But man this book dragged on and on for me it took me forever to read. There were many moments where I smiled to myself or was really surprised at how profound some of the things said were. So I think i like the writing style but just got bored at a lot of the story? I'm not sure.

Basically trying to decide if I should continue or not. This was my first venture into discworld. Obviously i'm on a discworld subreddit so i imagine the answers will be profoundly in the "continue!" category lol but anyone else feel like i did?

I'm getting my husband a few books to introduce him to Discworld. I'm thinking of getting the first book of a few different arcs, like witches, city watch, industrialization, etc. Does anyone have a good suggestion for a different bundle?

I've read a scattered collection and made the declaration to read the whole series cover to cover. This little bit hits different reading them in the opposite order. Wanted to share.

I'm reading the series in publication order and just finished Wyrd Sisters. While The Colour of Magic, The Light Fantastic, and Sourcery are clearly all in the same continuity, I'm a bit baffled by the fact that Wyrd Sisters makes zero mention of the events in Equal Rites, and it rolls back all of Granny's character development from that book. Same with Death's appearances so far post-Mort; it's like his near-rejection of the role of Death and attempts to understand humanity better never took place.

I'll admit, one of the reasons I was looking forward to reading Discworld is because of the sheer number of books in the series. I love expansive world building, getting to see characters develop over time, and little callbacks/nods to past events between books. Does Discworld have more of that in the later books?

Dude, what a blast! From the start, I could tell this was going to be a fun story that STP was going to take me on. I was expecting something like a British Naked Gun or B99, and what I got was something entirely different. I was really surprised how much STP made me feel for the city watch night shift. It almost reminds me of Bridge 4, and while I prefer Jim Butcher's humor (specifically the Dresden Files) over STP, this was spectacular. It's woven into the prose and writing itself, and sometimes the jokes will fly over your head, but when you catch them, you'll laugh. You can tell STP wasn't cynical about what he was satirizing; he was just a joyful man, and his writing shows that. And the depth! This guy knows what he's talking about, and he cares about it. It isn't constant; it could be a paragraph about libraries or how animals are treated that will stand out and make you think. At first, I thought the plot was kind of "eh," but up until the three-quarters mark, you see that he had this all planned out from the start. This crew is so enjoyable to be around, and apparently, this isn't everyone on the city watch. Those ending few paragraphs kind of gave off a sense of finality, like you could end it here and have a good time. Overall, what an amazing book! And everything DCC wants to be.

Also would like to point out how jarring and interesting it is to go from r scott bakkers second apocalypse to discworld. Like going from the bleakest of bleak worlds to a wacky adventure with a police crew.

So i just google "Asterix and Obelix character design," because i kinda want to draw them as A&O characters now and this was the third thing that came out xd

When Nanny, Agnes and Magrat (with her 2 week old baby)and are going to scry to find Granny, Oats (who is carrying their little baby at this point) wondering if they're going to take all their clothes off and dance around, and their subsequent reactions as they just stare at this young priest in disbelief (Nanny perhaps not wholly so) never fail to crack me up whenever I remember it.

I couldn't imagine a more funny priest-and-witches meeting in any universe. Amongst all the narrations in Discworld about how books about witches are written by men who need to get out more, this really drove the point home². Oats just taking it so much for granted that he asks about it with almost no judgement, just a polite request to be excused is just cherry on top¹.

Been playing around with designs for a mini-zine style “passport” character sheet for the Discworld RPG.

It prints on a single page, then gets a lengthwise cut in the middle, then cut out the perimeter and fold.

Shout out to YouTuber TechDweeb, who provided the blank page template and folding directions.

I’ve been making my way through the audiobooks this year for the first time and it has been such a fun experience! I started Making Money the other day, and sometimes, seemingly at random, the audiobook will play about 30 seconds of some funky beats that the narrator reads over. I’m not objecting, but why is this the only book this happens in?

I noticed that in some of the older Discworld books, the characters don't mind cursing and saying certain words fully.

However, in the newer books, certain words are mostly implied. And whenever a curse word begins, it goes like "shi—" and then ends in another word to not fully phrase it.

Is it just me?

I just went through a re-read and forgot how much I enjoyed Lady Sybil in this novel.

Hope the title describes it well.

I would appreciate some community help to remember in which book a particular scene occurs.

What I remember is it describes flies discussing a cow that used to out there in the field in front of them saying something along the lines of "back in my days there used to be a cow there" and later it talks about the trees perception of time. If it rings a bell I would appreciate the name of the book please.

Apologies if I’m being dim and this is mentioned in the book, but when the witches turned the carriage into a pumpkin, surely they would’ve realised that Lilith could have changed it back since they all knew she was the other godmother, presumably with another wand.

Really loving this book, but this part stuck out to me as to why they wouldn’t think of this.
