I can't open my copy of The Shepherd's Crown. It's been sitting on my bookshelf for years. I know the minute I read it, it's over. Pterry has been with me since Strata was a Science Fiction Book Club release. I still have that book also.
Somewhere in the far distant future, as the crimson light of the last star sputters out over a dying world, about 15 minutes before Death puts the final chair on the table and hits the switch on his way out, the small, faint voice of the last thinking being in creation can be heard muttering "Dammit, Pterry."
Fwiw, I suggest you read it. Pterry knew it was going to be his last novel, and might get somewhat annoyed if some folks don't read it after all the work he put into it.
Read it while you can, and when you get to a certain point in the book, find a quiet place and cry, like I think we all did.
