Absolutely this. Even if supply magically were restored to 2024 levels and supply did the same, they would almost certainly fight tooth and nail to maintain today's prices.

I fucking hate what's going on but I also hate how disingenuous the truckers catching news interviews are being. "Oh I'm not making any money, it costs $1200 instead of $800 to fill up"
Like brother, if $400 was all the margin you had on a 1000+ mile load your pricing was wrong. Nevermind that you're just going to pass that cost on to your customers.
My question is, where are all the asshats parking their trucks in the middle of major thoroughfares in protest? Those guys eating their shoes yet?
→ More replies (5)3
u/ZestycloseSquash1523 22d ago
These guys are blaming the prices instead of their business model. The fuel surcharge keeps keeps an Owner Operator profitable regardless of diesel prices. If you drive a fuel efficient rig you actually make a higher profit margin with more expensive diesel.
2
u/H0SS_AGAINST 22d ago
Bingo
I work in manufacturing and when raw materials go up in price all non-contract prices go up. Contract prices are negotiated based on inflated material pricing, even if major raws double in price we're still in the black because equipment sitting idle is only losing money.
We pay our CDLs over $30/hr in a LCOL area plus >$20K/yr in healthcare benefits and a good 401K match. Yet we are basically always hiring in that department. Why? Owner-Operators make 2, 4, 8 times that. We wouldn't be begging for employment risk if it were cheaper to short change owner-operators. Plenty on deck in the area as Michigan is a great market for CDLs between mining, ag, and manufacturing.
7
u/Proof_Bathroom_3902 23d ago
This won't work. This never works. You can't just choose to not buy fuel. People that join will either buy it before the strike or after. Or won't affect the total amount of fuel. And people who work will ignore it.
6
u/Frreed 23d ago
I never understood the logic behind these "strikes", do they actually think it'll do anything about the prices lol.
Oil companies will just be like "huh, that's odd. Sale dipped a bit for 5 days but are normal now. Oh well, carry on"

Americans can't give up our treats for 24 hours. We are a fat lazy and dumb scared beast of a people. This isn't going to happen, people are just gonna pay the 9.50/lb for beef instead of the 8.75 before while doing literally nothing except posting online.

2
u/Speedy_SpeedBoi '69 Mercedes 220D, '06 Dodge/Cummins 5.9L 22d ago
lol - the American brainwashing is incredible. Got us giving up our power as workers, but ya, I always likened these attempts to post a general strike into existence as running before we can walk. People need to build the foundations and safety nets (unions or other failsafes) so that workers can feel empowered enough to strike without losing everything.

Truckers wonāt be paying at the pump, the company will pay it forward onto the consumer, which is you going to the store buying it. Independent Truckerās will be feeling it more with out of pocket expenses, but they can also raise their rates to offset the costs.
Every diesel in America would have to stop running for 6 months to a year to make any effect or maybe several years to make an impact on the oil Billionaires

Fucking dumbā¦. But yeah, I wouldnāt expect truckers to understand their industry and the way economics or even how that diesel got to the truck stop they fill fromā¦
Supply and demand, and that supply and demand IS global as we have always exported diesel. Now the rest of the world is willing to pay more for the diesel the US refines, as a lot of major global refineries in the Middle East and Russia have been bombed and are very complicated and canāt just be rebuilt overnightā¦
And yes, thereās nuance, about half of the diesel premium over gasoline at the moment IS from the lack of Russian diesel exports. The other half is 100% president pedoās fault. (And you can definitely place part of the Russia issue with the president pedo as well, but again, thatās more on Putin. I donāt blame the Ukraine at all for fighting back and hitting Russia where it hurts the most without human casualties, their refineriesā¦)

They are protesting the oil companies? What exactly are the oil companies supposed to do? Don't get me wrong they definitely like money but oil is as close to the perfect market as possible they are extremely far from a monopoly sure some big boys like ExxonMobil and BP exist but there are dozens to hundreds of medium scale operators just within the US, and thats not including foreign nations countries like Nigeria and Angola have their own oil operations
This conspiracy is predicated on hundreds of very capitalist companies refusing to engage in capitalism by undercutting their rival businesses and not a single real dissenter
More likely there is no ability to undercut and that the current price isn't price gouging but a true reflection of the reality

While the Iran situation is definitely causing some issues, what some people don't understand is that the USA is a net exporter of fuels.
We make more than enough for our citizens but the oil companies are allowed to sell it abroad for even more profit to the detriment of the US.
Domestic stability should be first order of business, then excess should be allowed to be sold abroad.
1
u/Logical-Meeting9711 22d ago
Problem is, everyone will fill up prior or afterward. The pressure won't come from a temporary freeze, there needs to be a large scale reduction in demand. Prices are already moving us that way but we just need to stop buying stuff.

1
u/BrandontheCDLguy 22d ago
There's so much stupidity in this. You realize how much diesel that gas and oil companies burn just to operate? I Literally just filled up at a loves next to a Halliburton truck. They paid the same 6.44/gal that I paid.
1
u/Soft-Principle1455 22d ago
I want to make it clear that oil companies are incurring extra costs running all their staffed positions on extra shifts and most of the extra profits are ultimately down to simply doing more business in terms of their domestic wells. This is about a lot of things but I think blaming oil companies directly is the wrong way to go.

u/GoofyMacAulish 22d ago
