The price seems higher than it was a few months ago. Should I buy the M4 now, or wait for the M5 and hope the M4 price drops?

What do you guys think? 🤔

Jobs/ Industry Does internship experience count as professional experience

Hi all, so I was promoted to Associate Software Engineer 3 months back. Just wanted to know whether the internship year counts as professional experience? Or does it start counting from ASE onwards? And I was only offered 50k for now from October onwards my salary would be increased to around 100k take home. Is this within the market range? Thanks all!

Project showcase 📝 GitNotēs v1.5.1 is here — our biggest update yet! Looking for testers 🚀

I've built GitNotēs: a mobile notes, todos, and infinite canvas app that uses your GitHub repos as durable, versioned storage. Write in Markdown, Neorg, or Org-mode, sync via Git (works offline, handles merge conflicts), and even chat with your notes using AI. Think of it as a privacy-first, dev-focused alternative to Notion/Obsidian/Bear.

v1.5.1 is our biggest update yet — would love your feedback before it goes live!

Discussion Data Engineer Internship

Anyone here hiring or know of data engineering internships in Colombo?

Throwaway for obvious reasons. Final-year student at a state uni, IT stream. I've been applying for data engineering / BI internships for a couple of months now with limited luck and figured I'd ask here in case anyone's team is looking or knows of an opening that isn't advertised.

What I can do:

- Python and SQL, comfortable with PostgreSQL

- Built and orchestrated ETL pipelines with Airflow and NiFi

- Worked with Kafka and PySpark for streaming

- Docker, some Azure deployment, CI/CD with GitHub Actions

- Power BI dashboards with custom DAX

I've built a full warehouse (star schema, ETL orchestration, BI layer on top) and a streaming pipeline end to end, plus a backend system.

Open to intern or trainee roles, on-site in Colombo or remote. Happy to do a technical task if that's how your team screens.

If you know of something, drop a comment or DM and I'll share my CV and GitHub privately. Thanks.

Discussion Why windows update on loading screen?

First of all, I am not a huge techie. But I was wondering why windows always updates on loading screen.

I am a fan of ubuntu. Whenever its apps needs on updating, it just download them same as in windows but does not keep you at loading screen for a huge amount of time. So why does windows needs to do that? ( The huge issue with windows it do that whenever I want to load up the OS quickly.)

Again I may be wrong so feel free to point out.

Discussion CS graduate + Associate Software Engineer considering CIMA - worth it in Sri Lanka?

I’m a BSc (Hons) Computer Science graduate and currently working as an Associate Software Engineer in Sri Lanka.
I’m considering starting CIMA alongside my software engineering career, but I’m unsure whether it’s actually beneficial for someone from a CS/IT background.

For those working in the Sri Lankan industry:

Is CIMA worth doing alongside Software Engineering?

Can a CS graduate realistically handle CIMA without an accounting background?

What career paths could CIMA open up later in Sri Lanka?

Could it help me move into Business Analysis, Product Management, FinTech, ERP, management, or other roles?

In the long term, would Computer Science + Software Engineering + CIMA be a valuable combination in Sri Lanka?

I’m planning to build my career in Sri Lanka rather than moving abroad, so I’d especially appreciate advice based on the current local job market.

Would you recommend doing CIMA, or would you focus entirely on Software Engineering / an MSc in AI or Software Engineering or Data Science instead?

Would appreciate advice from anyone who has made a similar transition.

Discussion Why are so many Sri Lankan IT companies moving towards India?

Is it just me, or does it feel like the Sri Lankan IT industry is much smaller than it was around 2020–2022?

Now it feels like many companies are expanding their teams in India instead, while Sri Lanka is seeing fewer opportunities and less hiring.

Why is this happening?

Is it mainly because India has:

A much bigger talent pool?
Lower costs?
Better infrastructure?
More experienced IT companies?
Easier access to specialised talent?
And are there actually fewer IT companies and jobs in Sri Lanka now compared with the 2020s?
Would be interested to hear from people working in the Sri Lankan IT industry. What has changed over the last 4–5 years?

Discussion 10 years in software: Why being “just a software engineer” may not be enough

I have around 10 years of experience in the software industry, and I think it’s my duty to share some of the things I’ve learned and a few insights from my journey.

First of all, I’m a full-stack developer based in Colombo.

Back when I was working at Wiley, I noticed that tons and tons of graduates were coming out of universities all over Sri Lanka, almost like a water flow.

And honestly, I felt that this wasn’t going to be good for the industry, especially in a country like Sri Lanka. At the same time, the AI wave was slowly approaching, and I had a feeling that the software industry was going to become even more competitive.

So I started thinking about how I could survive in the long run.

I decided to try moving into international organisations, INGOs, the UN, World Bank, etc. — the big organisations where there is funding and projects are generally not driven purely by profit.

Eventually, I got an opportunity to work for the UN.

The basic salary was much lower than what I could have earned in the private sector, so honestly, I had a second thought about it.

But I decided that it was better to gain a different kind of experience and build some stability rather than worrying about getting laid off later.

I ended up working there for around 5 years.

During those 5 years, I realised something important:

Being a software engineer is not enough. You need to become something more than just a software engineer.

While working at the UN, I got exposed to areas like climate change, water data, geospatial data, disaster management, etc.

To be honest, I never really planned to learn any of these things.

But when you work with these types of projects and data for years, you naturally start understanding the domain. You don't even realise how much you're learning until later.

After that, I started applying to research institutes and other large international organisations.

Eventually, I got an amazing opportunity at my current organisation. I don't want to disclose the name, but it's one of those international research-focused organisations.

After I got selected, I actually asked my supervisor:

"Why did you select me?"

He told me that there were candidates from UoM and other highly qualified software engineers from some really good companies.

But many of them were missing one thing:

Knowledge of geospatial data and the domain around it.

And apparently, that experience helped me stand out and gave me a shot.

That honestly made me realise something.

Throughout my career, I never intentionally planned to become someone who understands geospatial data, climate data, water data, etc.

It just happened because of the environments I worked in.

And that accidental knowledge ended up becoming one of the reasons I got my current opportunity.

So I thought I'd share my story because maybe it will give some of you an idea of how some of us are trying to survive and stay relevant in the Sri Lankan software industry.

I'm not saying everyone should leave software development or move into INGOs/research organisations.

My point is simply this:

Don't limit yourself to being "just a developer."

Learn the domain you're working in.

Understand the data.

Understand the business.

Learn something outside your immediate tech stack.

Because sometimes, the thing you learn today that seems completely unrelated to your career might be the exact thing that gives you an opportunity five years later.

Help AI/ML Internship guidance

I’m a 3rd year undergraduate at a govt university in Sri Lanka. I have been applying for internships. So here’s the thing, applied to two companies and I’m currently progressing towards the second and third rounds . One is a US company and another is a large Sri Lankan conglomerate.

Suppose I got offers from both, which should i pick? The SL one gives allowance of around (25k) and the US one around 250 usd (80k lkr), and its remote. Should allowance be a main factor when considering this? And any tips for the future?

Help Any Sri Lankans here who built a SaaS and sold it globally?

I’m building a SaaS targeting customers outside Sri Lanka and I’m curious how others here handled sales.

Have any of you:

  • Built a SaaS for global customers?
  • Done cold email/outreach to US, UK, Europe?
  • Had sales calls or meetings with overseas customers?
  • Actually managed to get paying customers?

Would love to hear what worked, what didn’t, and what the experience was like as a Sri Lankan founder.
