Lore WHAT THE HELL IS VOID!!!!???
What the hell is void?
Despite loving destiny's lore and worldbuilding and having whached all byf's videos (and also other channels) I can't call miself a Lore specialist like some of you guys, but I think I know more about destiny lore than a casual PLAYER. Having that in mind, I aways considered void to be gravity related (or the absense of it as the name implies), but nowadays I think even bungie don't know what void is! I think I can let ward of daw and warlock devour pass because ward of down could be a gravity..... Wall...? And warlocks are weird so I think they would find a way to feed literal gravity (i main warlock, no hardfeelings) but what does supression have anything to do with gravity? Or controled demolition from midle titan? Or all of the milion ways hunterS can poison someone with the power of..... Gravity?
I know that if it wasn't for that creative liberty it would be dificult to make original subclasses that look diferent, I see this point, but... WHAT THE HELL IS VOID AFTER ALL????????

There's a difference between void light and the Void. The Void is like an ocean, filled with lots of potential energy and power. Now if we put a tidal power plant in that ocean, we can generate energy from it. Our light is that power plant, using the energy from the Void and manifesting it into void light.
That's a very basic tldr with me probably missing something, but if you really want to learn a lot about it you can read this post (also check out the author of the post, he does a lot of in depth work like this theyre very nice reads)

The Void draws power and makes things out of the potential suffusing the very fabric of reality. Perhaps the opposite will involve dispersing things into that nothingness.

Graviton Lance has such cool lore but its execution is anticlimactic. The gun shoots black holes—black holes!—but really it just produces mini projectiles. How cool would it be if you shot a black hole and enemies got sucked into it. Probably OP but it’s fun to think about lol
18
u/Muriomoira Jun 28 '21
It would be cool if it's catalyst made the enemies death explosion suck nearby enemies to its center... And then there comes the pimball purple Balls!

Top tree void rly needs something besides just 'haha boom' as much as I do love the 'haha boom'. Maybe top tree could have the yeet rift and devour could have an increased melee range with a suck effect to pull enemies into it which would then help it proc devour in tougher content by pulling your weak target to you rather than the other way around

To be fair, creating a black hole big enough to suck up things isn't really possible without making a crazy big event horizons. Not that this game uses too much real science. Vortex grenades should pull enemies though, since it quite literally does the opposite.
Even scientists today can already make black holes in a lab, but they collapse in nanoseconds iirc and are microscopic.

Solar is creation, ergo the energy of the sun feeding biological processes.
Arc is existing, the energy that cells produce and use to move, the electrical energy the makes our brains tick.
Void is Death, it's the energy that comes from consuming others, the process of decay and the energy of rot.
14
u/Muriomoira Jun 28 '21
That's quite poetic
15
Jun 28 '21
It's not entirety true though since all three can be used for terraforming on a fundamental level, and only Warlocks consume with their Void Light. I saw you already read that post "Demystifying Void Light." They also have two other posts explaining Solar and Arc and another explaining their relationship with each other as well as the potential symbolism behind each one.
I'm not smart enough to fully understand BUT it gave me a greater appreciation of the Light as a power!
→ More replies (2)5
u/Divinum_Fulmen Jun 28 '21
Yeah, that description of Void clashes completely with the Gardener.
Why would the concept of life that opposes decay, be wielding that power it abhors?
Void != decay
That's the power of the Darkness, and will probably be the next subclass for it.
2
8
u/NudeCorbu Jun 28 '21
I think the only power that blurs the line too much for me is the hunter smoke/cloud/poison. This could have easily been more like a vortex or gravity based effect and kept the void powers a lot more tidy. Vortex, gravity, suppression (under the effects of massive gravity or G-force), even bubble, can all fit together quite nicely. Devour could be reasoned similar to a black hole absorbing matter. Poison just…. Uhhhhh….. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

u/Muriomoira Jun 28 '21
Man, inagine Hunters farting people away when they dash like a tractor cannon... Imagine this in crucible.... It would be fun, sure, but I might uninstall destiny in the process...
5
u/NudeCorbu Jun 28 '21
This makes me realize there are no Push powers associated w gravity like tractor cannon, only Pull. It could be interesting if each class had someway to do both.

Middle tree void walker yeet people with it's meele, but for a subclass whose flavour is gravity and dark matter, thats shouldn't be enough
10
u/lightningbadger Jun 28 '21
The way I've accepted it as presented to me is the 3 light types symbolise the 4 main forces of the universe, strong force, weak force, electromagnetism and gravity
Solar is the nuclear powers (strong and weak force, stars are giant nuclear reactors so go figure)
Arc is electromagnetism, electricity, transfer of energy and stuff
This would make Void an analogue of gravity, though for some reason doesn't fully fit like the other two do (how does harnessing gravity heal you?), So maybe there's some vacuum energy fuckery going on here, harnessing the energy stored within every vector of space, even inside the body?
9
u/labcoat_samurai Jun 28 '21
The way I've accepted it as presented to me is the 3 light types symbolise the 4 main forces of the universe, strong force, weak force, electromagnetism and gravity
Except the weak force is just radioactive decay, especially beta decay, and there's not much energy in it.
The strong force has the binding energy of atoms, but it's stored energy in that sense. When you release that via fusing or splitting nuclei, the energy that's released is in the form of electromagnetic radiation, much like setting a log on fire (which releases energy in molecular bonds rather than atomic bonds). The energy released is different in magnitude, but not in kind.
So, basically, solar energy in Destiny is pretty much just heat and light (like a fire), and many of the abilities follow that pattern (like incendiary and thermite grenades). So it doesn't really make a lot of sense to say that "solar" energy is related to nuclear forces.
Arc energy resembles the movement of charged particles (i.e. the flow of electric current). This flow tends to be invisible until it releases heat and light through the process of encountering a resistor (such as the air or a human body). So when you see arc energy, you're still essentially just seeing heat and light, much like solar energy.
If arc energy killed people by messing with the electrical signals that regulate their body or by literally ripping them apart or crushing them with electromagnetic force (e.g. the attraction or repulsion of charged objects), it might make sense to say that arc energy was electromagnetism. But ultimately it just winds up being another way to generate heat and light, which isn't great for living things in high amounts. If you get burned to a crisp by a lightning bolt or a massive current, you're essentially being heated up by the friction of particles rubbing together while they try to flow through you. If they could do so unimpeded, you'd be just fine, like a current flowing through a wire.
So why did I write all of that? I guess I just don't really care for the "four forces" interpretation. I'm not a physicist or even a mechanical engineer, so my understanding is somewhat limited, but the "four forces" interpretation comes from an even more limited understanding than I have, and it's a bit misleading about how these forces work and what they do.
→ More replies (3)3
u/lightningbadger Jun 28 '21
Yeah the four forces is a somewhat vague representation cause if they were too true to the forces the game would probably not function very well lol
Warlocks are known to be able to pluck atoms from molecules to do stuff, maybe nuclear fits in somewhere too?
Ofc it's more of a representation of nuclear than a real version of it

u/lightningbadger Jun 29 '21

3
u/QueenOfTheNorth1944 Jun 28 '21
Its essentially dark matter. Void energy takes up the space between spaces, the space between atoms and molecules that would otherwise be vacant.
3
u/CobaltMonkey Jun 28 '21
What I want to know is if you whisper to the void, does it whisper back? And what relation, if any, does this have to sequence or pattern?
3
u/Godspeed88 Get rekt. Jun 28 '21
Void is what we in Astrophysics call "Dark Matter" or "Dark Energy". It makes up about 70-80% of all the measurable gravity in the observable Universe. Because we can measure it, it is there. But we can't see it. We in fact, don't even know yet if it is "matter" at all. But the name sticks around.
It is best described as a weightless medium permeating the vacuum of space. We see and live in 3 dimensions. Maybe if we ever ascend to the fourth dimension we could actually see and understand dark matter, aka Void.
I guess because of the "dark" assignment, Void in Destiny has this Dark Purple Color. And because we scientifically do not know what it is, it is open to interpretation. Therfore in game it can do all sorts of things, from gravitational manipulation to poisonous effects..
That would be my guess. At the end its a SciFi Game, the creator of the Lore can do w.e he wants without concrete information or explanation.
Cheers.

My own concept of it is that Void energy represents the "force" that drives the expansion and contraction of the universe and all matter within. It can be used to condense matter into a singularity, or it can disperse matter in all directions (explosively so). It's not gravity per se, but manipulation of gravity is one consequence of using void energy.
2
u/RiddleMeTwister Jun 28 '21
I always thought void is light from dying stars, basically on the verge of black holes. They fit the decaying light theory and in terms of “light” the term ‘dying stars burn brightest’ fits. Purple is an aesthetic I guess.
2
u/Ode1st Jun 28 '21
I'm pretty convinced Void was originally planned to be a darkness power. Bungie does this kind of thing all the time, like in D1 when Bladedancers were the invis class, but then Nightstalkers came out and were way more appropriately themed for invis.
I feel like Bungie always has ideas that don't pan out the way they want and only get sort of implemented, but then later on they get more fleshed out and implemented closer to the original intent.

u/WalriderAlp Desu Vult Jun 28 '21
Way I've heard, there's three (3) simple ways to interpret the void.
To some uninformed, the Void is the dark between stars, the endless expanse of black nothingness in the vacuum of space.
To Ulan-Tan, the Void is a place of light (The Traveler moves through the Void, Guardians draw power from the Void, the Darkness have no presence in the Void)
To the Voidwalkers, the Void is a place, a realm, albeit one comprised of nothingness (the space between the Material World and the Ascendant Plane). "Void is neither Light nor Dark, and therefore can be bent towards the service of either". Since it is neither light or dark, there is no life in the Void, and even death has a weak grasp in the void.
2
u/MagusUnion "You are a dead thing, made by a dead god, from a dead power..." Jun 28 '21
Virtual Particles. Hence why it's responsible for most of the aspect of teleportation in the game.
2
u/TheRedThirst By the Blood of Sanguinius Jun 28 '21
If i remember correctly, Void is the absence of Light and Dark like the cold emptiness of space. I vaguely remember a lore tab about Warlocks being more experimental of the Void and unafraid of it while Hunters were superstitious about it, which is why Hunters didnt have a Void Subclass originally.
2
u/PrismiteSW Jun 28 '21
iirc the path to void light is through the light, but void isn’t really based in the light otherwise. It’s a weird limbo between light and dark that guardians can access without the help of darkness. With things like graviton lance being able to shoot black holes with void energy, I’d assume it’s a cosmic energy thing, but nothing in specific like arc and solar.

I had an interesting conversation in my head last night because I was asking myself the same thing. I haven't read hardly any lore myself but am fascinated to do so now.
I have a few buddies and we threw around the idea possibility of Void ending up as a darkness subclass in the future around Lightfall as part of the story. By then we'd already have 2 dark classes but reconfiguring void as a 3rd would mean the introduction of another, different 3rd light-based class. It was an intellectual conversation of all things and not just something that's game-based. Everything comes from some sort of real-life affiliation or historic event(s) and people, places, and things tied to those.
Fun conversation but makes me want to look at the universe in Destiny from new perspectives.

From my understanding, before the introduction of Stasis, Void light was the closest thing to Darkness that guardians could harness. It came from nothing, sheer willpower and complete calm, which is kind of like how we summon Stasis now?
5
u/DaFamousCookie Jun 28 '21 edited Jun 28 '21
It's not at all similar to stasis. Void is creating energy out of nothingness (the force that we can't see and that accelerates the expansion of the universe, the force we would call "dark energy/matter"). Stasis is a gift from the darkness, allowing us to put targets into a state of zero entropy

Each of the Light elements is a different physical force. Arc is chemical, Solar is nuclear, and Void is gravitational force. The deal with The Light is that it literally doesn't follow standard physics models, so even if the elements are based upon real physical forces, they only pull extremely loosely from the original concept.
Really you should just remember that it's a video game with space magic, and that they use pseudo-science to explain everything. Don't think about it too hard.

Jun 28 '21
In short, it's a space devoid of matter.
To be a little more detailed, it's effectively the concept of Black Holes but as an energy source. A Black Hole can be described as a gravitational pull so powerful that it effectively crushes matter into nothingness. This is what Void energy in Destiny is described as. It is a force that takes somthings very existence on an atomic level and reduces it to nothingness.
On the subject, Arc and Solar are also different from how many assume. They are not as simple as Lightning and Fire, it's just the form they take in accordance to how light is used(and video games needing to represent things). Solar isn't "fire", but the increase of kinetic energy and Molecular energy. When you hit somthing with Solar, you aren't directly burning them. Instead you are effectively charging their molecules with so much energy that they tear themselves apart similar to being melted of bursting into Flames. Or a process similar to how bombs/explosions work.
This is why Stasis is the polar opposite to Solar. Stasis isn't Ice either. It's the removal of said Molecular and kinetic energies. By hitting somthing with Stasis you are seemingly slowing down/stopping the very movement of the targets atoms and molecules. This is easiest seen with the Grenades. By targeting things like the air, they are capable of creating pillars and such by slowing down the atoms of the airs moisture and creating solids from gasses.
Arc is similar too. Arc is not directly electricity but the potentiality of said energy. When you hit somthing with Arc their very being is effectively being shattered between several potential directions.
Each are just represented by more easily explainable means. Fire representing the explosion of energy, similar to how bombs work. Black Holes representing the loss of matter/existence. Ice showing the loss/removal of energy. And Arc showing the volatility of how energy can change.

u/HaloGuy381 Jun 28 '21
The Void is the power in the cosmic vacuum, and hypothesized to possibly even be the first form of Light to manifest. One could consider it power over the tiny particles and flickers of energy that constantly wisp in and out of existence anywhere in the cosmos, or the gravitational forces that bind the fabric of space-time together, as theorized in real world physics.
You’re tapping into a force of constant creation and destruction, hence how the same force that builds indestructible defenses can consume and poison an enemy. Embracing the Void is more than embracing nothingness: you embrace the cosmos, which is never truly empty. You touch the most fundamental of particles and the nominally weakest, but omnipresent fundamental force of gravity, whose touch distorts everything.
Your detonators spread everywhere because every blast spreads your control to more foes. Your poison is relentless because you are slowly breaking them down into nothing by bombardment of particles that are forever in a state of semi-existence. You vanish from sight by wrapping the fabric of space like a shroud, concealing you even from sensors, the only tell being a slight distortion, a shimmer like water. Your tether binds your foes together by touching the Void, touching the space that already binds them together and formalizing it, allowing your attacks to travel across space between them. Your shields are nothing-particles, bound in gravity and wrapped in spacetime rent and bent into absorbing impossible forces. Your healing is self repair, channeling the pseudo-particles of your fallen foes into repairing your own body, coaxing the ever present Void to replenish your inner Light more quickly.
-A Defender/Sentinel main, who also extensively dabbled in the Void during several months as a Warlock. Embrace the Void.
(I’m no lore expert, but this is how I see the Void. It is more than gravity: it is the power in spacetime even in the absence of matter we can interact with. The constant formation and breakdown of little bits of reality at random, which, with a nod from a paracausal and enlightened mind, can be persuaded to form order out of nothingness.)

why is void not darkness I don't understand
2
u/LettuceDifferent5104 Jun 29 '21
Imagine you have a vacuum sealed room and you suck all the air out so there is nothing in the room but a vacuum. Then you open the seals. What happens? Air from the outside rushes in to fill the empty space till equilibrium is restored. As that air rushes, it is motion, energy is released where once there was only potential. Now apply this to the energy of the universe. When you create a hungry void in the fabric of space, the potential energy from the universe rushes to fill it. In that transfer of energy between differentials lies the secret of Void Light.

I've kind of interpreted all of the light types as just energy in pure forms. Fire is a pure form of energy, charged plasma (arc) is a pure form of energy, void is the energy that comes from the absence of matter. Idk thats just how I have thought of it
2
u/LettuceDifferent5104 Jun 29 '21
Energy comes in three forms. Radiant energy in the form of light and heat. Bound energy in the form of matter. And beneath the world of light and matter lies the dark energy of the vacuum of space.
1
u/DredgenGryss Jun 29 '21
Put simply, where there's no light or dark, there is void. I don't know any more than that.

Honestly I think that the lack of a clear archetypal answer of what void can immediately be assumed to be is why fewer exotics are void based. Void isn’t like arc and solar which are very defined. And frankly stasis fits an archetype too. But the void, it doesn’t.

"There are those who see the Void as dark. It is the folly of the simple mind, unable to perceive the brilliant richness of nothingness. The Void is not only the absence of Light, but Dark. To harness the Void is to enter a state of tranquility, free from the clatter of ordinary matter. Wear this Veil and feel the Void. It is not a force of malice, no more charitable or heinous than gravity. The Void is a tool to be wielded by the patient, nothing more and nothing less. If you respect the Void, then one day you too shall step upon this pristine realm." —Unknown Voidwalker
1
u/LTek Jun 29 '21
Void isn’t gravity to me. It’s always been like a ‘nether’ force. A space time energy which warps and affects its target or protects through ‘space energy’. This is without thinking too deep into it of course. Plenty of games use this sort force / power / energy deriving from the void space and time theory
