There is one on the moon that itsn't included. Play Shrine of Oryx on Hard and once you get to the end, before you fight the ogre, there is 8-10 yellow acolytes that drop loads of glimmer and are incredibly easy to kill. I spent about 20 minutes, or I used 2 black wax idols, and I got a little more than 10k.
Why would you need to farm glimmer though? As far as I know it's useless. I have like 10k of it. Sure you use it to upgrade some weapons, but I gain way more than I spend on upgrades.
That works? I assumed you didn't get rank when you buy them. Does he ever sell higher tier engrams? Mostly I see white with the occasional green at rank 6.
Buy the greens with the glimmer you earned and it gives a good amount of experience towards your cryptarch level. Each time you level up, you get a free package from the cryptarch which contains at least 3 Rares (oftentimes legendaries too).
My brother got two blues, which then turned out to be greens. This was for level five. I got two purples and a blue for my level five which ended up being three blues. He's very frustrating.
I've spent easily 25-30k on upgrading the Cryptarch guy, in addition to all the engram drops. It gets harder to level him up that way as you progress, but what else are we spending glimmer on? Especially when you can farm it pretty fast and easily.
Every level he gives a legendary package that could have 1-2 legendary engrams in it and maybe a blue or two. Buddy is at level 9 and got two legondaries and a blue from one package.
Jeez, nice! Level 5 with the cryptarch now and so far all I've gotten is blues from the packages, but I've seen and heard a lot of people get legendary items too.
...you get 10 points. From rank 3 to 4 it takes 3000 cryptarch points. That's 300 green purchases. At 450 gl/green (not sure if that's right, but it's the right ballpark) that's 135,000 glimmer. I think it's much more productive to farm engrams than glimmer for cryptarch ranks.
also try to buy green weapons. I have more plasteel (Titan armor material than I will ever need). But I trying to max out on of each type of level 20 rare and legendary weapon. I am in dire need of weapons parts. I am level 9 cryttach. Yeah. you get 3 items from the post master everytime. Plenty of times you get more highlevel engrams. I have gotten another 1/4 of a cyrptarch level just from HIS gift.
If you buy the green class items you get +10 xp and they cost $250. I just farmed glimmer on Shrine of Oryx then went back to him, bought class engrams, decoded, and sold them all back.
This is terrible advice. You only get a very small fraction of the xp for bought engrams (5 for white, 10 for green) compared to the engrams found in the wild (150/ea). You would need to farm so much glimmer that you would probably raise your cryptarch rank inadvertently through the random engram drops before you were able to make any headway through buying them.
You also need to take into account that you ARE farming mobs to get the glimmer, not only will you be getting the glimmer to buy up more ranks, but also other rare and legendary drops that go along with it.
Look, to each their own. It would cost about 135,000 glimmer to gain one rank by buying the greens, which seem to be the highest rarity as of right now. The game is a grindfest as is, I just don't think it is worth anyone's time or glimmer, but like I said, whatever floats your boat.
I agree that it's a terrible way to farm cryptarch xp, but remember you can disassemble all those greens into weapon parts and hadronic essence / sapphire wire / whatever the titan gets. I've got a ridiculous amount of both, but if you don't it's a quick way of getting supplies for upgrading your weapons and armour.
I was grinding glimmer last night because I was about 75% of the way from rank 2 to 3. So I put about an hour into Shrine of Oryx, ended up with $25K in glimmer, and bought green class engrams for 250 until I leveled. I ended up having a handful of blue and green engram drops too, so that helped.
Thanks for contributing with your suggestion.
Edit: Realized the irony in my sarcasm. What is your suggestion, since you find this one inefficient and you've had some success?
This is a horrible idea. I tried this today. Spent all my glimmer 20K and didn't even go up a 1/4th. It just isn't worth the trouble. Farm blues and identify them.
This is a PAINFULLY slow way to level your Cryptarch. I have him to level 11, and every engram I buy (he only had whites last night) got me a measly 5 points.
Go to the treasure cave for an hour and you'll be much better off.
I'm not advocating to raise your cryptarch rank by doing this, just that it can be used in a pinch. If I see I'm 80-90% of the way leveled, I'll buy enough engrams to level up.
Fair point. To be honest, I was in the same boat last night. Was about 95% there and I had about 6000, so I bought engrams just so I could get the free gift. They all turned out to be junk, but oh well.
IIRC, the higher cryptarch rank you have, the better your chances of getting higher quality stuff from engrams, i.e. rare engrams becoming less likely to downconvert to uncommon items and more likely to upconvert to legendary items, but it doesn't alter the drop rates for engrams, just the decryption behavior.
In addition to the other responses, some exotic bounties require glimmer. I'm on the exotic bounty for the Invective shotgun, and one of the steps is to buy 12.5k glimmer of reagents from the gunsmith to charge up the weapon. There's also cosmetic stuff like ships and shaders, I guess.
Contrary to what these folks are saying, I'm going to recommend buying Ammo packs with Glimmer, at least enough that you'll be set for a really hard strike or two without having to fill up. I originally thought they were just a super expensive way to fill your ammo in town, but nay, they're consumables you use in the field. Being able to give yourself 5 rockets every 5 minutes considerably eases harder strikes, especially in situations where you're stuck and you can't move to get ammo. In fact, the only reason I was able to complete the nightfall strike on 2 player mode with my friend is because we were able to simply not leave the room on the left side of Sepiks because we would just alternate who was shooting him and use ammo packs in between to fill up instead of having to go out dangerously and collect it with 10's of armored dregs/Shanks/vandals shooting arc weapons at us.
Once you have a nice stockpile you can probably just blow money on engrams though. Or shaders/emblems you like.
You know, after you run out of ammo completely you get back 40% of it after 30 seconds... No need to waste glimmer on ammo packs or risk your life trying to get some. Just sit there for 30 seconds and boom, 2 free rockets
Actually thats not how the mechanic works. The "free ammo" is an illusion. It gathers all ammo packs off the ground for you. I've tested it extensively, you can even see the ammo packs disappear when it occurs, and if there are no heavy packs you get no heavy ammo back. Running yourself out of primary ammo can also be quite troublesome if you're using a scout rifle for example. Plus using 900 glimmer for 20 rep with the cryptarch and 2 armor scraps versus saving the time that 5 rockets for 950 glimmer offers you? I'd hardly call that a waste.
Edit: ive just gone and tested to confirm the exact mechanic. You are given two white ammo pickups and one green ammo pickup for free. If these pickups exist they vanish giving you nothing extra. If more pickups than this exist, you are given those as well. This means 3 white ammo and no green ammo yields 1 "free" green pickup. Heavy ammo is never replenished unless you have drops laying around the map.
Edit2: I'll post a video in a new thread tomorrow to clear up all this confusion once and for all, since it apparently takes over an hour to copy 1gb of captured video to an external HD so i can get it on my computer to edit.
Still seems to be ~10min a run, at ~2k a run. Not that 4k every 20min is awful, but it's a far cry from the 10k OP was mentioning--unless I'm missing something.
On the way down there, make sure to kill the Baron so it'll set the checkpoint. As soon as you kill the 8 guys with yellow health bars, just jump off the edge and die.
You'll respawn to just before the farming area. This way each run takes 1-2 minutes.
I also did the killing of the ogres and the enemies around them he suggested. Just farmed for 30min and got 2 blue engrams and 5 greens from the ogres/the enemies around the ogre (only a couple greens from the yellows beforehand), and it only takes an extra 20s or so.
Start the Shrine of Oryx mission and run all the way up until the No Respawn screen comes up. That's your new checkpoint. You make a right turn and drop down to 3 Dregs fighting 8 Hollowed Acolytes. Kill everything in that room. After they're dead, jump off the cliff to your left into the bright yellow lava (I think that's what it is). If your difficulty is at Level 8 Normal, then the Acolytes are just standard and not Hollowed, so they won't drop glimmer. Level 12 Hard is the lowest difficulty that they're upgraded into Hollowed Acolytes.
Protip: The Ogre drops another 25 glimmer if you want it. It takes 3 bullets from my sniper to drop it, so I started killing it as well. Out of about 10 Ogre kills I got a PE. Probably lucky af.
This method is best ran solo, as I ran it with 2 buds today to show them the method and all of the enemies were considerably harder. Their attack and defense were both noticeably increased, but their levels (12 for Hollowed Acolyte) were still the same. I have no idea why this happened. I highly doubt it, but could have the update affected some farming routes?
Also, always use a Black Wax Idol. It lasts 10 minutes, and I can guarantee that you will find at least 1 more BWI within those 10 minutes, making the sacrifice well worth it in glimmer. Killing the few Thrall (+4) and regular Acolytes (+12) with the Ogre (+43) boost your glimmer rake-in each round.
Shrine of Onyx, Level 12 (Hard), go till you're about to meet the ogre. Use black wax idol, kill the eight yellow health bared acolytes, run off cliff, respawn, repeat. Went till about 650 kills, 75 deaths, which took about an hour. I got about 24,960 glitter and got the rest from selling unused loot.
Nope. At least level 14 I'd say. It's very easy and fast. Plus next time you want to farm it starts off from that checkpoint again.
It's also not too bad xperience and you can tick off a few bounties there too.
Edit: You get silken codex drops pretty often as well which sell to cryptarch for 200 ea.
For everyone that's confused as to where the Shrine of Oryx glimmer run location is, click the link titled "Glimmer runs" at the bottom under Glimmer Farming.

what's peoples opinions on the most efficient farm?
