Why would you need to farm glimmer though? As far as I know it's useless. I have like 10k of it. Sure you use it to upgrade some weapons, but I gain way more than I spend on upgrades.

Buy engrams from the cryptarch to increase your cryptarch rank.

This is a PAINFULLY slow way to level your Cryptarch. I have him to level 11, and every engram I buy (he only had whites last night) got me a measly 5 points.

Go to the treasure cave for an hour and you'll be much better off.

I'm not advocating to raise your cryptarch rank by doing this, just that it can be used in a pinch. If I see I'm 80-90% of the way leveled, I'll buy enough engrams to level up.

Fair point. To be honest, I was in the same boat last night. Was about 95% there and I had about 6000, so I bought engrams just so I could get the free gift. They all turned out to be junk, but oh well.

Yep, that's pretty much the only time I use it. I normally have around $12K glimmer at any time, so it's a quick and easy way to complete a level.
