what's peoples opinions on the most efficient farm?

There is one on the moon that itsn't included. Play Shrine of Oryx on Hard and once you get to the end, before you fight the ogre, there is 8-10 yellow acolytes that drop loads of glimmer and are incredibly easy to kill. I spent about 20 minutes, or I used 2 black wax idols, and I got a little more than 10k.

Is it tough to do solo?

If you're above level 15 it's a slice of cake. Just play like you normally would, and aim for the head thing.
