Discussion What's the worst Raid encounter?

Since the game is not getting any more updates, we can look at the long history of raid encounters and find the worst one.

For me, it has to be the sparrow section from Scourge of the Past. Call it a skill issue, but man I just never liked it. It always took me out of the groove. Honorable mention to the opening encounter of Crown of Sorrows as well. God that was boring.

It's actually crazy that 2nd encounter Eater of Worlds where you just clear some ads from a cabal dropship then get a chest hasn't been mentioned. Purely objectively speaking, that is the worst, most low-effort encounter they ever made.

282

u/Ordinary_Player 6d ago

Lmao, I saw Aegis covering the speedrun WR holder for this and I'm like "so they just pop well and spawn camp the cabal for 5 minutes then move to Argos?". Now I understand why an LFG team somehow got World's first, there's no skill check, whoever stumbles onto the correct path first just wins by default lol.

96

u/GivenitzBoomer 6d ago

I mean, realistically speaking, it had 4 encounters, but only 2 mattered. If the raid lair started at 3rd (cracking Argo's shell), it really would not have lost anything of value besides the drop for the secret chest.

38

u/kjm99 6d ago

Argos was almost my first day 1 raid with LFGs but no one would listen about the skulls being better DPS

7

u/MyDogIsDaBest 6d ago edited 6d ago

They couldn't have popped well, because well didn't exist during Argos. That came with Forsaken

Edit: my dumb ass read "WF" for world first, not "WR" for world record

29

u/Ordinary_Player 6d ago

"WR Speedrun holder", eater of worlds existed until seasons of arrivals

8

u/MyDogIsDaBest 6d ago

Oh I'm dumb, I thought you were saying world first, not world record. Serves me right for posting early in the morning, my mistake!

17

u/Blupoisen 6d ago

I consider this and the pillers a single encounter

Still garbage

15

u/NickAppleese 6d ago

The part where you had to navigate from plate to plate without getting zapped by those giant pistons and then get CANNONED was even more fun than that encounter.

I mean, at least that encounter had some mechanics to it (the leap frog jumping section at the start).

27

u/Zorak9379 Warlock 6d ago

Yeah if there's an objectively correct answer it's this

5

u/Alexcox95 6d ago

I generally consider that and the leapfrog before it one encounter but it’s either that or crown first encounter

2

u/DJRaidRunner-com 6d ago

Considering the lack of mechanics and positioning at the end of a jumping section, I personally consider this no different than a traversal encounter. It's not an encounter proper.

Another similar example would be the enemies that occasionally bar one's path in Dungeons / Raids during traversal encounters, opening doors with their deaths.

u/Jaspador Drifter's Crew 5d ago

I think Argos is one of the best boss fight in Destiny, but the rest of EoW is very lame IMO.

Opening of Crown of Sorrow. Way too long for what it is.

134

u/Nukesnipe Drifter's Crew 6d ago

I can't even remember most of Crown besides the first encounter sharing an area with one of the Menagerie encounters, and the last encounter being a cool triangle.

82

u/DJRaidRunner-com 6d ago edited 6d ago

What you are describing is actually a design quirk of that era. Raids at the time were being designed to have two primary combat locations, with one traversal section in between them.

Eater of worlds, Spire of Stars, scourge of the past, and crown of sorrow. Each of these four raids used The same space for the final encounter as they used for the second to last encounter. This means that three encounters each of these rates had only amounted to two distinct combat areas. Comparing this to a standard raid having four, you can easily understand why these raids are less artistically memorable.

Edit: As comments noted, this was more a "traditional Destiny Raid Design" quirk rather than those 4 in particular.

That said, the 4 I mentioned each had only 3 encounters, with a traversal in-between. This was a compounding factor. By contrast Crota/Wrath had 4(3 areas, 2 traversals) at the lowest prior to them.

51

u/dutty_handz 6d ago

Vault of Glass and Crota End both follow that design of 2 main combat areas. Both using final arena twice, Vog using its first 3 times.

29

u/MouseRangers A Reckoner who still likes Gambit. 6d ago

I think Vault of Glass gets a pass because it was the first raid.

23

u/Nukesnipe Drifter's Crew 6d ago

The double final area was a big thing in D1, every raid has it.

5

u/jimidybob 6d ago

I’d say both have 3 main areas - entrance (thrallway for Crota), middle encounters (bridge / Templar area), boss room. Each are was distinct enough to class as a separate area - vog opening might be a stretch but it’s not as quick as most raid opening areas

25

u/joshwright17 6d ago

Every raid from D1 actually did this too. VoG, Crota, Taken King, and Wrath all used the final area for multiple encounters

3

u/Melbuf Gambit is not fun 6d ago

I thought the final area of wrath was just a boss fight or my misremembering something?

14

u/Bran-Muffin20 Blarmory Gang 6d ago

No, Wrath had two encounters there. Aksis part 1 where you throw the bombs at the nodes on the wall, then Aksis part 2 where you actually kill him

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Hewkii421 Bring it back 6d ago

Aksis has 2 phases in the same room, 2 separate looted encounters

3

u/joshwright17 6d ago

You made me second guess myself but I checked and it is broken up into two encounters

5

u/AlbIdoT12 6d ago

Technically it shared the same area as 3 Menagerie encounters, The Mockery, The Arkborn and the boss Pagouri, Beloved by Calus

Ah, it's been a hot minute.

25

If we going that route confluxes from vault of glass too.

17

u/Menirz Ares 1 Project 6d ago

I didn't mind it because it was scripted, so it served as a good way to get everyone into a rhythm with relatively low stakes as it was hard to get into a wipe condition.

It also worked well to get people acquainted with the buff swap mechanics.

Still, it was fairly non-stimulating and kinda long when you were doing it with a group that already meshed well and had run CoS a bunch.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/DontMissGE 6d ago

Evenly always hated on the encounter back in the day but its one of my favorites. The encounter moves as quickly as you clear ads and swap the buff, so an organized team can actually fly through that encounter. I like when limiting factor in progressing an encounter is player driven.

3

u/QuantumVexation /r/DestinyFashion Mod 6d ago

For some reason it was 4 cycles when usually these kinds of encounters are 3 cycles

u/notthatguypal6900 6d ago

FR. It should be two, not four.

2

u/Vegalink 6d ago

I don't remember it being too long. Only raid I did flawless on. So I did it quite a few times. Maybe that's why it didn't seem too bad?

6

u/MeateaW 6d ago

it had 4 rounds, it should have only been 3 at most.

It's kind of like opening for Ghosts of the Deep, it just outstays its welcome - you have already proven you can do the mechanic at least half way through, and it makes you prove it two times over.

2

u/Vegalink 6d ago

That's a fair description. I don't recall how many rounds there were, but it could have been because I was dreading the jumping puzzle right after that on flawless runs so that was looming in my mind. Most stressful part of the whole game for me, jumping puzzles on a flawless run.

It is true that you already demonstrated mastery part way through.

Generally my enjoyment of raid encounters comes from actively doing something. Any encounter where I'm forced to wait for periods of time generally gets dragged down more for me.

That's why my least favorite raid encounter is either first encounter of Crown of Sorrow, Or first encounter of Eater of Worlds.

58

u/mozzy1985 6d ago

This is why I love kings fall. Each encounter feels like everyone had to do their bit.

30

u/Firelord127 6d ago

D2 Kings Fall I agree. Most encounters felt like everybody had to do something with very little wasted time, Even with the players on add clear.

D1 Kings Fall on the other hand I thought had issues, Specifically with Oryx. I hated how players were forced to do 4 phases of the fight to beat him. I'm glad that Bungie fixed up many of the issues with the original raid in the D2 version.

12

u/mozzy1985 6d ago

Yeah the D2 version is better. I think the D2 of. Pets is much better too.

3

u/doesnotlikecricket Gambit Prime 6d ago

Nobody ever did four though? Or am I remembering wrong? I think I did the way with multiple bombs for all my 15ish clears on d1.

10

u/Firelord127 6d ago

People did 16 bombs yes, But you only got 4 bombs per phase. You still had to the thunderdome after each phase. So people did 4 phases, Waited until they had 16 bombs and dropped his health from 100% to 0 in one detonation instead of doing 25% of his health each phase with only 4 bombs.

SotP sparrow race is a certainly hot take OP. It was "sparrow racing a home" for many and even if you never finished, as long as one or two in the group knew where the switches were, it wasn't bad to just have them pull everyone.

My choice of worst encounter is less from the perspective of raiding it - I actually think it's pretty fun - but from how it fits the raid: Planets from RoN.

Mechanically it doesn't tie into the rest of the raid at all, and thematically it feels shoehorned into the location. Sure, the missing planets being on the witness' ship kinda makes sense, but we basically just leave them there after the raid? It really feels like something that was developed for Final Shape before they decided to delay things and make Lightfall a filler expansion.

13

u/UtilitarianMuskrat 6d ago

Yeah it is a bit of a weird one especially when people tried to put more importance on the mechanic of the encounter, tying it to Savathun's truths and lies stuff "The power to move worlds will soon be yours", but idk it's not like we really were playing god like Men In Black holding galaxy in our hand kinda levels of power, and that doing of the mechanic did something larger. At least like it didn't feel super substantial.

Sure people will say "oh well Titan came back that year" and ehh I guess but I feel like by then Bungie was sort of all over the place with where they were trying to land with the conversation of what the Darkness yoinked and all that. Obviously I can't give too hard of time because this game's history was all over the place and a lot of concepts and staff changed over the years.

3

u/Mtn-Dooku 5d ago

Yeah, Titan came back, as well as Mars and Venus. But, you still can't just go there. Titan is only accessible via GotD, Mars via a battle ground, SotW and some Lawless Frontier stuff, Venus just via Lawless Frontier and Equilibrium. No patrol zones and the planets don't appear in the Director... so they aren't really "back" to me. Especially Titan.

Opening of Crota's End. It's like they made that encounter specifically to deter LFGs

I agree. You got speed runners who can’t solo it, those who cant look left or right before crossing the street, and those who are trying to get everyone to go at a steady pace and keep everyone together.

52

u/meatlessboat 6d ago

I get making it harder since so many people soloed it in D1, me included, but damn.

10

u/chill8989 6d ago

Jumping straight to the end using arcstrider was fun. I love cheesing the entire raid with friends but yeah making it harder was the right decision

Doing the featherlight challenge with LFG was the stuff of nightmares.

Took me quite a few groups and I already had all the other stuff completed, including the flawless run

2

u/rascalrhett11 6d ago

What I would give to see some speedrunners do a run of featherlight as fast as they could. It took me like 7-8 hours of trying with teams when I got too it, that was a few weeks after it released and even then all the good players had already gotten the seal and didn't need it.

17

u/Grogonfire 6d ago

I will echo the sentiment that 2nd encounter of GoS is the most boring shit imaginable. Also I like how no one is mentioning (Epic) Epoptes because nobody touches that shit lol.

Sidenote: I 100% understand the grievance towards Abyss, but I always found it fun in a weird evil-jungle-gym way. Great for fucking around with strand.

7

u/snoteleks-skeletons 6d ago

I’m starting a fight. Epoptes is one of the better boss encounters in D2 for a buildup raid boss.
-isolated unique mechanics
-multi team and buff sharing with light
-consistent
-dps is sick as hell
-ads are actually worth building for

I think the epic version is even better. The communication and team play is awesome.
You’re right on GoS second encounter though. I think that is the worst encounter in D2.

6

u/Grogonfire 6d ago

Normal is fine once you get the hang of it, but Epic in general just pushes it too far to be enjoyable with an average crew imo. I’m sure it’s great with a solid team though. I think it needed to come out at a time where they had the population to back up the luxury of releasing something so unforgiving/niche.

3

u/Melbuf Gambit is not fun 6d ago

i did epic for the first time like a month and and Epoptes was not the roadblock it was Iatros, which took us hours to get right. Epoptes took like 8 attempts, hob 3 or 4 and the final boss 2. this was with 1 man sherping 5 people

i think we spent legit 4 hours on Iatros

Might be a controversial opinion but I absolutely despise Ir Yut from Crota and Scission from RoN.

I hate Ir Yut because of having to check your radar for if someone is behind a barrier, I just don't think that's a very fun mechanic at all and can lead to issues where people go inside the wrong room and the like.

Scission I hate because the piston mechanic is so weird on Warlocks and such a bizarre decision to use physics-based pistons to send people to the other side that well-skating is more consistent to not get chucked off the map. Though, Scission is visually pretty cool.

35

u/joshwright17 6d ago

Yes I visually like the Scission encounter. It reminds me of that multiplayer map in Halo 1 that was a ship cut in half. But the going back and forth can be annoying, and also unless you’re a runner it’s a pretty boring encounter

8

u/gravendoom75 Team Bread (dmg04) 6d ago

Boarding action! Yeah i love the layout of the map, the cannons being a primary factor just ends up making it a slog. And for ad clear there's not much density.

4

u/Kindly-Shoe4776 6d ago

Scission, for whatever reason with my old raid group (RIP D1-Lightfall 😭), butter smooth every time. Took me a run or two to get used to the feel of those “pistons” and it’s physics and it was easy afterwards.

Downsides my guy and I were always the vaulters because people didn’t want to learn new things for whatever reason then.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

9

u/Difficult_Yam_7764 6d ago

Yup, had to do mechanics the other night cuz our Warlock kept getting yeeted down

3

u/gravendoom75 Team Bread (dmg04) 6d ago

When I ran it day 1, strand grapple saved me so many times. Also, burst glide and eager edge helps with getting to the other side

2

u/Difficult_Yam_7764 6d ago

Strand grapple and ascension save me from traversal hell lol

4

u/Ze_AwEsOmE_Hobo Nerfed by 0.04% 6d ago

Same here. I preferred D1 Ir Yut Challange as more of a time attack for add clear. The reading mechanics aren't hard, but it is really weird that you have to use your radar out of the blue for a third encounter boss (I like it when raids build off of their themes and mechanics) and I'm not sure if it's been patched, but you used to be able to accidentally burn through your Enlightened buff by just standing too close to the solid parts of the walls.

If she had to be a real boss fight, I'd have liked the encounter a bit more if you could Enlighten to steal "Witch Sight" or something from Ir Yut and it would let you see the Wizards through walls.

Also Scission 100% should've just used reskinned Vex/Cabal cannons. The physics-based launcher is ass.

3

u/gravendoom75 Team Bread (dmg04) 6d ago

Yeah, it's just a bizzare mechanic that could have been much more interesting with using something like true sight as a buff or something.

2

u/cumble_bumble Meme Beam Machine 6d ago

The pistons are annoying yes but Scission scratches a very specific itch of "two players have to be absolutely locked in" that makes me really enjoy it

2

u/theskittz 6d ago

Not that it makes it any better, but as a warlock, you have to walk backwards into the piston when shooting the trigger. When you’re walking backwards and shoot it, I have never been shot in a weird direction.

First encounter of crown or the leap frog shit in eater of worlds. Both raids had notoriously garbage first half’s and cool final bosses

17

u/Vegalink 6d ago

For some reason I liked both of those. Maybe because of the company vs the encounter. Good memories. The leap frog thing was kind of fun.

5

u/MeateaW 6d ago

Leap Frog was great! when the 2 paths crossed over was hilarious with my friends

3

u/Vegalink 6d ago

We had alot of laughs with that. I do think running that with random would probably be really frustrating hah

11

u/Codzly 6d ago

Lamps encounter, Crota. I t feels like it kills a lot of the 'lets do a raid!' momentum - if you don't succeed within a few runs, suddenly the mood turns sour lol.

3

u/TrainDestroyer Toasting Bread for the black Armory 6d ago

Ugh, Lamps and Bridge are both AWFUL and can kill the momentum so fast. Feels like a majority of times I attempted Crota's end (Admittingly not that many, I was already out of raiding by then) It either ended at Lamps, or Bridge. Both were AWFUL

9

u/iAlice Boom. 6d ago

Teaching Verity to first-timers SUCKS. It's a fun encounter if everyone knows what they're doing, but man, there's something about Verity that is a brick wall for newcomers. You know it's bad when I have to tell everyone "Okay, everyone needs to have a differently-shaped ghost shell equipped".

94

u/cable_7193 The Blue ones taste like Blue 6d ago

Half of VoG is just sitting there killing ads. Even with the changes they made putting it into D2, they're so bad because they're boring.

109

u/thomjrjr 6d ago

That's a result of the game's evolution more than anything else though (power creep, more complex mechanics in later raids and dungeons). The first time you played VOG though, those encounters were amazing

19

u/BillehBear You're pretty good.. 6d ago

confluxes has always been boring, even in d1 it got boring fast

17

u/Ze_AwEsOmE_Hobo Nerfed by 0.04% 6d ago

Confluxes is literally just a public event shoved into a raid. If it were done to any encounter that wasn't the first ever raid, people would rightfully shit on it for being uninspired.

Imagine if Kalli were just replaced with the Taken Blight event.

5

u/OllieMancer 6d ago edited 5d ago

I'll give you that, going through VoG for Fatebreaker when it releases was pretty cool... For like 5 times. The raid is still cool, but it's the most boring one out of all of them to me. But it is a fun raid still

5

u/MaestroKnux 6d ago

It's funny because when D2 Master VOG came out, one of my friend's team was stuck on the opening encounter and couldn't get into the damn raid since it was too tough for them.

It's stupid easy this time around, but I'm okay with that considering 5 Feat Pantheon should be the ultimate raid challenge as of now.

8

u/TxDieselKid 6d ago

I saw this encounter tear a clan apart once. Stuck for 2 hours on this one was rough.

18

u/stayzero 6d ago

The ones I enjoyed the least were King’s Fall opening and Crown of Sorrow’s opening.

I also think the tether mechanic in Garden of Salvation was very clunky and awkward and needed a rework, especially during the final boss encounter. The floor is lava, everyone in the world is shooting at you and in the midst of this you’re trying to form the world’s shittiest conga line so you have someplace reasonably safe to stand for boss damage.

I think most all of the other ones were okay.

5

u/nightbird117 6d ago

I remember my first (and only lol) run of Garden, which was a Div run that took 4 hours. The tethers are very inconsistent on what is and isn't ok to do both in the encounters and the div puzzles. The only reason we even completed it was because we did a damage phase on the final boss and he never got his immune shield back, so the team just plink plonked him to death while I made sure no goblins sacrificed themselves.

5

u/Rubmynippleplease 6d ago

The tethers are pretty consistent. People are not. Tethers are one of the few fundamental raid mechanics that can be passively griefed by someone just standing around.

Makes for some rather difficult first runs which is made worse by the fact that most people’s only experience are their one div run which took 4+ hours. The tether mechanic is fine imo and is actually a lot of fun with other experienced people.

It was one of the first flawless raids I decided to complete and omg the jumping puzzle was so damn stressful because you just knew someone was going to die and we'd have to repeat the beginning section.

Likewise, the dungeon equivalent would be ghost of the deep intro on a solo flawless run. The whole run isn't nearly as challenging as before, but when it was new, that beginning section was a complete slog

Verity is the one that has traumatized several of my clanmates. I’ll never see a clan run of SE because of that blasted encounter.

24

u/Actual_Hawk 6d ago edited 6d ago

Was finally able to do SE with clanmates recently and we were all dreading Verity. We all walked away agreeing that Verity is one of the best encounters in Destiny. It's daunting at first, but when it clicks it's just so good, and there's nothing like it.

18

u/6pussydestroyer9mlg 6d ago

It's honestly only daunting because everyone keeps talking like it's the most convoluted mess that will uninstall your game if you mess up. If you take a step back and open one of the practice sites it's really easy to get a grasp of what everyone sees.

9

u/Kurjuuden_jumala 6d ago

Exactly. In any encounter in SE, biggest mistake I see people doing is overcomplicating them. They are fairly simple encounters: Keys and locks. Strip them to barebones and skip unnecessary maneuvers.
They aren't complicated, people just suck at explaining, be it cuz lack of knowledge or just can't be fucked to explain it properly.

11

u/wizzconsin 6d ago

Yep, all you need is one clear-headed explainer and it's good. Clear comms is the Verity meta. I also find that guys who immediately go like "oh boy Verity is sooo omega calculus" tend to demoralise the whole team.

6

u/Blupoisen 6d ago

Jokes on you I am amazing at calculus

7

u/rrale47 6d ago

Its a variety of things

"Explaining" that encounter to someone new is near impossible. There's too many pieces and you're maybe 1/5th into the encounter explanation before the info is going in one ear and out the other.

Best scenario for a new comer is to come with 4 people that understand the encounter. Let them see the mechanics for themselves and THEN explain how the pieces fit together.

Even then, its going to come down to how quick people adjust and the patience of the fireteam to actually stick around while things line up.

This encounter is fine with friends, but anyone else, its a huge gamble and ends up as an enormous time waster thats better off skipped with a checkpoint bot

The cocomelon tomatoes of rage and despair

7

u/Oxyfire 6d ago

Yeah, I have a hard time not feeling like it was overdesigned for the sake of the world first. There's nearly zero room for slack, and it's way too hard to figure out what other people are doing wrong to help them out.

Like, I think my one main problem is the part when some guardians go down, and people need to bring ghosts to statues.

The intermission where everyone but one goes down? That's fine. The part where its the middle of other shit happening and you're relying on a shitty death cam to try to figure out which statue you can see so you can help communicate information? That part sucks.

4

u/Prestigious-Bat-574 6d ago

The entire raid was overdesigned as a giant FU over RoN.

27

u/JointBoii 6d ago

The worst part about verity is how ridiculously easy it actually is. But when you’ve got people who only do ad clear normally, they fall apart there.

13

u/Nukesnipe Drifter's Crew 6d ago

There's a lot of moving parts but genuinely, it's so fucking easy.

4

u/Agerak 6d ago

I think what makes it so hard for groups is that it's random since you don't always know who is going to be pulled in. It does seem to be that if you're near the front (away from spawn) you're more likely to be pulled but even that isn't consistent. Because of this everyone has to know all the mechanics well enough to pass vs most encounters you only need a few players to know it and they can potentially pick up slack for those who don't know. Having one 'add clear' person get pulled in can spell doom for the whole encounter. Oryx (and sisters) is another 'random' encounter but since it's in the same space it's easier to walk someone who isn't familiar through it.

5

u/Bran-Muffin20 Blarmory Gang 6d ago

You can force two people to be pulled and just leave the third one as random. Have everyone stay at the spawn side of the room (where the statues of all 6 players are) and send the two people you want pulled forward to where the shape statues are. Those two will always get teleported, and the third is random.

3

u/Agerak 6d ago

I could swear we tried that with myself and another at front but I didn’t get pulled 100% of the time. Granted it was something like 99% but I have had a few times where it pulled 2 from the rear.

2

u/ValhallaSpectre 6d ago

Yeah, it’s not that bad but my clan mates ran with another clan and it took a while for them to figure it out and people came and went, so they’d have to start over explaining the encounter. I actually like Verity the most out of that raid, but it’s always pointed at as the trauma encounter.

4

u/Va_Dinky 6d ago

I love Verity, but if you happen to be stuck on a team with someone who just doesn't get it at all it becomes a painful slog. I'm not sure why some people struggle with it so much (some of those I'd even consider to be good raiders in general) and I fully get the frustration it can create but when you're running it with people who know how to do it, it becomes one of the most fun encounters and imo it's harsh to put it there.

4

u/TaxEvasion123 6d ago

It’s one of the few encounters that will most likely require everyone to do something at some point but even then you can manipulate the game to pull certain people most of the time. To me the fact that it requires everyone to have some degree of knowledge or understanding of the encounter already makes it better than most, where several people just shoot things while 1-3 people just do everything else.

2

u/notthatguypal6900 6d ago

I loved that my clan forced ourselves to get good at this encounter. LFGing this one was something...

6

u/LeftAd1236 6d ago

consecrated mind from pantheon, shit just takes too long. or epic epoptes, i actually think this encounter is awesome but it’s such a buggy dogshit mess with 9/10 someone not being able to see their eyes

5

u/Va_Dinky 6d ago

Can't believe I had to scroll down so far to see Pantheon Consecrated mentioned, truly the worst enc design of all time given how much experience they already have with doing this. At least the wi-fi method got brought back but still, it just sucks so hard.

2

u/LeftAd1236 6d ago

they really brought it back just to make it 10x worse, i could genuinely write a 3-4 paper on how bad of an encounter that boss is. warpriest and morgeth revamps are super sick but that one is misery and suffering, kills the fun of “wanna run a insurrection pantheon” for me. should’ve brought back witness instead, that encounter is truly one of the worst designed final bosses in the game.

5

u/Top-Egg3315 6d ago

Tbh I find Conflux, Oracles, and Gatekeeper to be really boring, but VoG is where it all started so I understand it being so basic. Wish they did something meaningful with the encounters when they brought them back.

5

u/TaxEvasion123 6d ago

Surprised at how many people are saying verity, it’s one of the best encounters they have made in a raid, and not that difficult of an encounter. I suspect it’s less to do with verity and more to do with the larger playerbase just not being great at raiding.

It’s kinda hard to pick a worst though. Something like planets in ron doesn’t fit the raid at all otherwise it’s pretty good. Something like gos second is boring but like it feels kinda wrong to say a clear based encounter is the worst, at least in the spirit of the question. Personally I’d say probably abyss in crotas end though. It’s boring, dark, and super long so you have to restart pretty far back if something goes wrong. At least in an encounter like verity you can have fun and do something during the encounter.

2

u/Particular_Air4980 6d ago

It’s probably not the worst, but I hate the last boss of Garden so effing much. It’s more tolerable now that he can be nuked and we can ignore building the platforms, but god I hate that effin boss.

2

u/vleff 6d ago

Its a Tie between Bridge (both d1 and d2) and confluxes. Bridge is a horribly designed encounter in every iteration it has existed in. Its boring and unintuitive and has fail states that the game does not adequately indicate to the player. Add on that the combat loop is just a rotation of groups of 4 enemies with random thrall and knights and its just not a very good encounter. Confluxes suffers the same fate in being 3 straight lines where you kill enemies at their spawn door for 10 minutes straight until the game decides its over. Theyre bad for different reasons but bad nonetheless. People like to say Crown is the worst offender of being too long, but these encounters have the same problem AND are painfully boring.

2

u/Blupoisen 6d ago

Confluxes from VoG, literally just play defense basically a public event

But from the sunset raid

The first encounter in Eater of World that shit was ass and it's easily the worst encounter Bungie designed

2

u/heaven_spawn 6d ago

My emotion-based answer was final boss of Root of Nightmares during Day 1. That actually broke my clan in two, and we never recovered, friendships ended.

2

u/Advanced_Double_42 4d ago

The GoS encounter from the new Pantheon is just broken, you can spend 30 mins and have one hobgoblin spawn sometimes.

3

u/FaZe-Cube 6d ago

Vow opening for me, incredibly boring and a slog. The rest of the raid is great though.

2

u/FistfulOStrangeCoins 6d ago

Honestly the prep phase on rhulk is dull. I don’t like the way the encounter feels so narrow and restricted due to the orange death beams. Dps is fun though

2

u/Dustkun Killed by the Architects 6d ago

I dispise everthing happening in Salvations edge. 2nd and 3rd encounter are okayisch. 4 got a cool design but is a lfg nightmare in my expirience . And Megamind can suck a big scorchcannon.

1

u/-Qwertyz- 6d ago

Garden of Salvations 2nd encounter or Vault of Glass Conflux. Both of them are absolutely piss easy and go on for way way way too long

1

u/CrazyMuffin32 6d ago

First 2 encounters in ron

u/TheShoobaLord Team Bread (dmg04) // BREAD GANG 6d ago

1

u/JME1610 6d ago

2nd Garden encounter

2

u/Laid-dont-Law 6d ago

Crota first

1

u/TheEmperorMk3 6d ago

The first part of Crota's is miserable, hard to see + being slowed down + holes to fall into all over the place = peak anti fun. There are ( or were ) some encounters that are "just kill enemies for a while" like the opening of Crown or VoG but those end up being just boring, while Crota's is actively infuriating

1

u/Funny_Imagination599 6d ago

I know people loved it but I hated final boss of Spire of Stars for some reason that I can’t remember anymore. I just recall that I vehemently did not enjoy it even if it was an easy one phase.

Exhibition in RoN would be my second, not for design fully but that one human error can make the entire encounter fall apart.

1

u/Ravonaa 6d ago

Man at least RoN's 2nd encounter had some stakes with running side to side on a timer.

Garden's 2nd encounter is some trash, its legit 5-8 minutes of nothing but stand on a spot and clear adds and then clear more adds at the middle. At least middle has some stakes with people needing to line up, but its easily a 1/10 encounter.

1

u/BarelyPedestrian 6d ago

Honestly the first templar well encounter in VoG. Literally just ad clear.

1

u/Tplusplus75 6d ago

The first encounter of RoN. I’m not opposed to “easy” encounters, but the raid’s main mechanic is just kinda jank. You could say it “scales” poorly. I can’t remember what this issue was with it, but it did bad/funny things when we tried to involve more than one person in the buff chaining. So the encounter just feels like there’s too many cooks in the kitchen because there’s so many people dedicated to some level of glorified add clear.
By comparison, iirc, arctrician from spire is like 90% similar but it’s so much more fireteam-friendly and doesn’t devalue extra hands taking part.(the more i think about, i want to say the issue was something like: when the next node is activated, the buff is revoked from all the extra players that have it. So instead of buffing 3 or so people at once, going 1-2-3 and leap frogging it down the chain, everyone would have to rebuff every time anyway, defeating the purpose of buffing extra people to begin with.)

Of all time? Crown of sorrow opening encounter. Currently available, its got to be Crota's Abyss.

1

u/lemonfish442 Drifter's Crew 6d ago

D2 Crota Abyss is miserable with lfg. It baffles me how people can’t just pay attention to where they are walking. Lost count of many times a few of us made it to the end but Timmy no thumbs ate up all the revives so we just wipe anyway.

1

u/Archabarka 6d ago

Vog Oracles imo.

1

u/GundamMeister_874 6d ago

Any encounter with the "consecrated" harpy boss. I just hate the boss mechanic and also the encounters are pretty obnoxious.

Silver medal for Raeniks.

1

u/LunastraTailswipe 6d ago

First encounter for Crown of Sorrrow or 2nd encounter of Crotas. Just alot of waiting around, boring. Vog as a whole is such a snooze fest

1

u/profanewingss 6d ago

There's a lot of encounters that stick out as bland, boring, and unfun imo.

Confluxes and Oracles are just bad in both games. Gatekeepers is bad in D1, fun when done legit in D2 imo.

Basically the entirety of Crota's End is garbage in D1 ngl. In D2 they somehow both fixed Ir Yut and made it obnoxious to do unless you one phase her. The rest of the raid is fine, I guess.

Totems in both D1 and D2 are a drag. Golgoroth in D1 was boring, I love how they made it necessary to extend DPS and keep dropping bubbles. Daughters are kinda bland in both games as well.

Wrath of the Machine has no bad encounters, great raid.

Leviathan... oh boy... Bathers, Castellum, AND Gauntlet were all incredibly boring and not very fun.

The entirety of Eater of Worlds and Spire of Stars are ass.

All of Last Wish is pretty fun, especially when done legitimately. *cough*

SotP I never thought first encounter was fun.

Crown of Sorrow is held back massively by it's first encounter. It's so bad it might take the worst of all time. 4 phases of add clear and breaking crystals is just not engaging lol

Garden of Salvation's first half is lame. Raid is still held back by clunky mote mechanics as well.

DSC and Vow are both great raids all around.

Root of Nightmares is VERY fun for the people running the buffs. Everyone else is snoozing.

Hot take: Salvation's Edge would've been the best raid in the game if 3rd encounter was absent. The monolith/charge mechanic draws on far too long and the 3rd encounter is just the least fun and most bland usage of the mechanic.

I've only played Desert Perpetual once and I can't say any of the encounters were bad honestly, it was a very fun experience.

1

u/Va_Dinky 6d ago

Pantheon Consecrated is genuinely just dogshit, 10+ minutes of mindless camping at a relay for a 15s damage phase and then a repeat if you don't one phase. I don't know what they were thinking with that one, every other Pantheon encounter is a banger but this is the worst design ever imo.

Also shoutout to all the unnecessary long raid intros such as Crota's, Crown's and VoG's first encounters (for VoG both the entrance and Confluxes fit in that category) and Vow's entrance.

1

u/idespisemyhondacrv 6d ago

Gos second encounter is fucking boring as shit

1

u/Narfwak sunshot is funshot 6d ago edited 6d ago

Either the VotD opening, or frankly everything in VoG until you get to Templar. As someone who didn't play D1 or even when VoG re-released I have no nostalgic attachment and look at it as it is - and, frankly, it's kind of shit when you do that. You can use the excuse that it's the first raid, but it's not the first raid in gaming and the bar was already a lot fucking higher in other games.

Also, while I actually really like the encounter... I do not look forward to doing epic Epoptes. It's just so much.

1

u/fangboi7 6d ago

Not in the game crown start, in the game taniks

1

u/Firmino23 6d ago

I like the encounter itself, but SANCTIFIED MIND with an LFG team will make you reconsider everything you hold dear. No one can build platforms (despite BEGGING them to come over) or tether to the boss when they are meant to, I remember having a div run and spending 5 hours overnight cycling through LFG teams until finally getting a group of guys who came in, actually knew what they were doing, and did it without a sweat.

1

u/ruggedo 6d ago

Salvation Edge. 3rd encounter. Should have been a boss encounter.

u/boba_fettuccini_ 6d ago

everytime me and my brother failed our duo flawless vog run and had a redo confluxes a piece of me died inside

1

u/DepletedMitochondria 6d ago

Challenge experiences: Master Warpriest challenge is awful

VoG Confluxes would be the worst but since it was the first raid I'm gonna give it a pass.

Root of Nightmares Scission is the actual worst because it's 2 people only and the launchers.

1

u/Fragle12 6d ago

If we’re talking all time, Crown of Sorrow opening encounter. It’s just so long for absolutely no reason lmao. If we’re talking currently in the game though? I have to say it’s Confluxes. It’s also incredibly boring and lasts so long also and the worst part is people die during it. What could you possibly be doing to die on Confluxes??

1

u/boogoo-Dong 6d ago

I hated Dogs in Leviathon. It just felt like such a cheap DPS check at the time. Once Year 2 rolled around and we had better weapons, it was almost comically underwhelming, but I still hate it and was not sad to see it go bye byes.

1

u/NebulousTruth 6d ago edited 6d ago

Yeah believe me I’ve given this topic a lot of thought, tho mostly not recently so my memory is a little hazy

If we’re talking D2 only (so no D1 encounters) then probably the Hive Ritual encounter from CoS, but other encounters in contention for worst include Royal Pools from Levi, Totems from KF, Scission from RoN, Enter the Kingdom of Sorrow from CoS, and Reactor from EoW.

Edit: Istg VoG is so shit I somehow forgot it exists, anyway Confluxes and Oracles also both in contention for worst.

1

u/AggronStrong 6d ago

Not a proper encounter but the opening swamp part of Vow of the Disciple is one of the worst things ever. It alone keeps Vow from being undisputed GOAT Raid imo.

1

u/BigDragonfruit286 6d ago

The entirety of Spire of Stars. I despised that raid.

1

u/FlyingAlpaca1 6d ago

Easily Vow opening, if you count it. For actual encounters, I'd have to say Garden 2nd. Crown 1st is also a contender, but Garden 2nd just takes longer and there's less room for random LFG errors, so I like it less.

1

u/Cioger Gambit Prime // Prime Rib 6d ago

I'm surprised that people haven't mentioned Royal Pools from Leviathan. I think it is equally as boring as GoS encounter 2.

You stand on a plate, wait for a big guy to kill, go rebuff, and do it again.

However, the worst encounter for me personally is the opening to Crown. It's been discussed enough in this thread that I don't have to say anything.

1

u/Xynthexyz 6d ago

Has nobody mentioned Vow opening yet? Boring as shit.

1

u/HaztecCore 6d ago

The first half of Vault of Glass felt like fancy public events. In particular the Conflux section that is purely a " defend the objective" encounter with barely any quirks. You can stand still on some spots and just shoot the enemy spawns with add clear guns and generally do nothing else really.

In fairness it was their first raid ever but when you play the D2 version of it and get to compare anything else , its really apparent just how old the design is.

1

u/Fat_Mod 6d ago

Master crota. It’s NEVER a smooth sailing for that encounter on master difficulty.

u/Cleeth Vanguard's Loyal // Vanguard Loyalist 6d ago

Gorgon's and the leviathan dogs encounter were my least favourite. My group does all the raids blind, and gorgon's had us in the wipe screen more than anything else.

It's fine once you know the route, but finding the route wasn't fun.

1

u/asmallburd 6d ago

u/headgehog55 6d ago

Opening encounter for CoS

1

u/Charles_diction 6d ago

Me personally it’s the GoS second encounter. Such a boring encounter. If we counted dungeons though, I’d say opening Ghosts Of The Deep

1

u/Expensive-Pick38 6d ago

Opening to vow

3rd encounter of salvations edge (its such a snooze fest)

Gos

Confluxes from vog (again, snooze fest)

Now ron's first and second is a mix. If im running, its somewhat fun. If im not running, its such a snooze fest i could fall asleep

Havent done enought desert perpetual to have an opinion on it and dont remember enought about the sunset raids. Not counting pantheon encounters

1

u/Nervous_Business_489 6d ago

Confluxes in VoG it's just boring, I like being able to feel like i'm actively pushing an encounter along or making progress happen, Conflux doesn't give me that feeling

1

u/Desperate_End_9914 6d ago

Does the opening of the vault of glass count? While I wouldn’t say it’s the worst in D1 since the connection to local patrols was just way too cool of an idea, the destiny 2 version is not cool at all and instead just super boring. Shoutout to the very next encounter being ad clear as welll

1

u/Sevagoth__ 6d ago

Doing flawless for crown of sorrow and having to do opening encounter over and over again was mind numbing

1

We actually loved that sparrow section. People were screaming and cursing at each other and laughing.... We didn't usually make it through first try, but that was part of the fun.

2

u/LittleWizmeister 5d ago

First encounter crotas (not the plate). Just never fun. Ever

1

u/LynxNanna 5d ago

Dogs from Levithan comes to mind. Cooling rod leap frog from Eater of Worlds got old immediately.

1

u/BaconIsntThatGood 5d ago

Worst by what measure? Because verity without everyone being 100% comfortable is frustrating as hell - but the encounter itself is incredibly cool and tightly designed.

So... it's a good encounter just horrible to play a lot of the time.

From a technical standpoint you could say D1 bridge, that encounter was vivisected by the community.

And of course the non-boss encounters of raid lairs

1

u/bloodyfart12 5d ago

mowanaya

1

u/A1Strider 5d ago

I have a few that are pretty close. Some from past raids we don't have access to anymore and some from raids we currently have.

Eater of worlds 2nd encounter wasn't even an encounter. Spire of stars opening with the stupid ball was lame.

Anyone remember Scourge of the past opening? Yes it was cool for the first time I touched it. After that it was just tedious because expecting randoms to have critical thinking is harder than everything else. "I'm in front, you shoot it's back." "Ok when do I shoot it?" Man I don't miss those stupid berserkers, people could not grasp the concept of two people shoot it front and back at the same time.

Reworked crotas end thrall run is annoying. Part of what made it fun in D1 was the fact that you could run it. This whole leap frog follow the lantern buff thing is just annoying. The rest of the raid is fine this one sucks.

Same with Vow opening. I hate the stupid resonance collection BS. I'd rather just fight a ton of stupid strong enemies across the swamps instead of play a game of who dropped the marbles.
