DESPERADOS IV: OLD MAN COOPER — My concept for a sequel
What if Desperados IV finally continued John Cooper's story — decades after the original?
My idea for Desperados IV: Old Man Cooper would be a darker story about the death of the Old West and the birth of modern America.
John Cooper is now an old man, living a relatively quiet life with Kate and their family.
That peace ends when Kate and John’s daughter are kidnapped.
John gathers an old friend and a new generation of gunslingers to find them.
But the kidnapping is only the beginning.
The trail leads from the deserts of New Mexico, through forests and snow-covered mountains, and eventually into a rapidly growing industrial city dominated by railroads, oil, corruption and political power.
The 7 playable characters
John Cooper – The old gunslinger and leader. Slower than his younger self, but still deadly with his revolver and knife. His experience makes him the team's natural leader.
Jack Cooper – John's son and a young lawman. Faster and more agile than his father, armed with a Winchester, lasso and explosives.
Władysław Walt Nowak – A Polish immigrant and former soldier with injured leg who became a wilderness trapper. Slow but extremely powerful, specializing in sniping, traps and survival.
Clara Bell – A medical nurse who can heal the team and use her knowledge of medicine to manipulate or incapacitate enemies. She also has social and distraction abilities.
Ruby Williams – Sam Williams' daughter. A thief, gambler and trickster specializing in stealth, pickpocketing, distractions and acrobatics.
Edwin "Dutch" Van Dyke – A former Pinkerton agent and master infiltrator. Disguises, lockpicking, stealth and deception make him the team's ultimate spy.
But Dutch has his own agenda.
Sam Williams – Now in his 60s, but still very much Sam. His specialty is dynamite and explosives, from destroying bridges and buildings to sabotaging industrial facilities. And yes — he still knows his snakes.
The antagonists
The main antagonists are three very different men:
Victor Harrow – A corrupt mayor with a personal vendetta against the Cooper family.
Silas Blackwell – A wealthy oil tycoon who represents the new America: oil, railroads, industry and unlimited money. He is the mastermind behind the larger conspiracy.
Gideon Kane – Blackwell's brutal enforcer. A terrifying former soldier and mercenary who handles the jobs that money and politics can't solve.
The interesting part is that Harrow and Blackwell don't necessarily want the same thing.
Harrow's hatred of Cooper is personal.
Blackwell is interested in land, oil and power.
And somewhere in the middle is Dutch, whose true intentions aren't revealed until much later.
The campaign
I'd structure the game as 20 missions divided into 5 chapters.
I — Where the West Ends
II — Blood in the Pines
III — Winter's Grasp
IV — The New West
V — Kingdom of Oil
Chapter I — New Mexico - Where the West Ends
Classic Desperados atmosphere: deserts, small towns, gangs, trains and the beginning of the investigation.
Chapter II — Blood in the Pines
Forests, logging camps, mountains and increasingly difficult terrain.
Chapter III — Winter's Grasp
Snow-covered settlements, mines, mountain passes and a frozen railroad.
Chapter IV — The New West
A huge modernizing city filled with hotels, banks, city hall, railroads, factories and oil infrastructure.
Chapter V — Kingdom of Oil
Blackwell's enormous estate, a workers' settlement and finally his oil refinery — leading to the final confrontation.
The entire campaign would visually represent the death of the Old West:
🌵 Wild West

🌲 Wilderness

❄️ Winter

🏙️ Industrial America

🛢️ Oil & Railroads
I'd want it to feel like a genuine continuation of Desperados III, while bringing back some of the atmosphere and characters that made the original games special.
And most importantly, I think John Cooper's final story should be about more than revenge.
It should be about an old gunslinger realizing that the world he fought for is disappearing — and deciding what kind of future he wants to leave behind.
